This thing is really cool. Made from mostly machined aluminum, it’s very precise and smooth to operate. The instructions were not very clear as to how this model works exactly but after watching a few videos of low temp Stirling engines, I got the idea but instead of using hot water, I ended up turning a candle wax melter upside down and using it for a heat source. I just happened to buy a hot bulb wax melter a few weeks ago that had almost exactly the same size opening between the light and base. The light is recessed inside a bamboo box with a flat bamboo base. I cut a flat piece of steel to fit directly over the bulb housing and it sits about 5mm away from the light but enough for it to heat quickly. At the lowest setting I can slightly spin the cam and it will continuously run until I turn it off. The higher I go with the temperature control, the faster the engine will rotate. The kits says to not exceed 120 degrees so I won’t run it long this way but I can leave it on low and just let it run. It’s almost like they were made for each other. On top of the cool factor, it gives me a chance to not only explain to my kids but show them almost exactly how an engine works and they understand what I’m saying by showing them. Really cool device that more interesting than functional but interesting nonetheless.
