Top Amazon Reviews

  • Not perfect, but at least 4.8 star worthy
Size: 7.6x0.9x9.8inches Color: Black
I've read many of the reviews (good and bad) on Amazon for the Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover before purchasing. I had been using a Zaggfolio and, while I liked the Zaggfolio mostly, it added too much weight with both the case and keyboard, made the iPad look chunky, bulky and thick, is made from molded plastic and had a few too many design flaws (can't charge the keyboard without removing it partially, the cover clasp didn't work properly, can't use iPad vertically, some keys on keyboard in awkward places, etc). In other words, the Zagg is a bit too cheaply made for the price. So, I recently began to look for something more flexible to address all of the failings of the Zaggfolio. Specifically, I was looking for something lighter and more sleek. I had seen the Brydge keyboard on Kickstarter and while I liked the idea, the execution was a bit too klunky still for the price. It also made the iPad look more like a MacBook Pro than an iPad. That search lead me to several other products until I finally found this Logitech product. I've always like Logitech's keyboard designs as they always try to preserve a good look and, at the same time, keep focus on functionality. Weight and Size This keyboard doesn't disappoint in that regard. When they say it's thin, it is thin, but no thinner than the iPad itself. Design wise, this is actually a good thing. Any thinner and it wouldn't look right and might be too fragile. The keyboard itself weighs 11.4 ounces (~323g) compared to the iPad 3's weight of slightly less than 1.5 pounds (~680g). Together, the weight comes out to ~2.21 pounds (~1kg). So, with this keyboard the weight and size is no longer a concern compared to the Zaggfolio. It also fits in my bag much more easily than with the Zagg case. Anything to make the iPad lighter and remain thin is great. I think weight is something that Apple needs to improve with the iPad. If they could produce the iPad 4 with the same specs as the iPad 3 at half the weight, I'm game. The Excellent The design of the unit when combined with the iPad matches so perfectly that it makes you wonder why Apple didn't design this. The whole thing is thin and light (11.4 ounces). Smart cover technology: has magnets to activate the smart cover feature to shut the iPad off or turn it on. Angle groove (white portion) that contains a magnet to hold the iPad to the keyboard at the perfect angle (horizontal or vertical). Small unobtrusive off switch. Great battery life. The Good The keyboard key action is reasonably nice for as thin as it is. The look is definitely in keeping with the black iPad, but may not work with the white iPad. Has small bumpers to keep the keys from touching the surface. When you open it, it looks a little like a notebook, but that's where the similarity ends. There's a lot of great attention to detail and design with this product. Bluetooth keyboard. Thoughtful key placement (requiring fn-lock to lock the iPad). The Okay Have to pull the iPad off of the keyboard side magnet to place it into the white groove. For me, this is not a problem at all, but it is an action you wouldn't expect to do. Although, I will admit that if they had a way to leave the cover attached and pull it into the groove, this would have been even better. The groove grip magnet is pretty strong, so you'll need to lift and pull to get the iPad loose from the angled groove. The groove grip magnet doesn't work with vertical placement (a given since there are no magnets on the short sides of the iPad). The Bad No escape key on the keyboard. I use vim in iSSH frequently and having to press the on-screen key is a bit annoying. Needs a sleeve to protect the whole unit. Shiny surface is completely prone to fingerprints, so you're constantly wiping down (cloth included). No rubber feet to prevent the unit from slipping and sliding on a desk or getting scratched up. Needs a rubber mat which should have been included. Conclusion There are only two things missing, a slipcover to protect the whole unit and a rubber mat. Both are reasonably easily obtained. I recommend this keyboard for the price. There are other products out there to place your iPad in or on, but usually more costly. This one is really the only one I've seen that preserves the look of the iPad and, at the same time, gives you the keyboard functionality needed to avoid using that irritating on-screen keyboard. Additionally, the design lets you use the iPad in either portrait or landscape mode. Oh, and did I mention that it's thin and light? ;) ... show more

  • Great portable keybaord for iPad.
Size: 7.6x0.9x9.8inches Color: Black
PROS: Thin, lightweight, excellent battery life. Shortcut keys are fantastic. Paired extremely easily. DOES work with the new iPad (3rd Generation, 2012). CONS: Not as "solid" feeling as the iPad itself. Fingerprints galore on keyboard surface. Back is easily scratched (see my review for a tip on how to avoid this.). Auto-correct doesn't work with this (or any other) external keyboard on the iPad. ---------------------------------- I'm writing this review on my new Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover as we speak. It really is an excellent solution if you need to have a physical keyboard to type on... I'm not having a terribly difficult time adjusting to the size of the keys, although they are a bit small for my taste -- however, Logitech has used the available real-estate very efficiently, with no wasted space, so the keys are about as large are they're going to get. It's a good compromise. One thing that I highly recommend is buying these: Blue Lounge Design Kicks Protective Pads for iPad/iPad 2 and Other Tablets (KS-GR) Those rubber pads I ilnked above are fantastic for keeping the keyboard (and the iPad) from sliding around and getting scratched. They don't add bulk, like a case would, and seem to do an excellent job of preventing scratches. You don't have to remove them to fit the iPad into the slot on the keyboard! If you're going to buy this keyboard, you MUST get yourself those pads -- you will not regret it, although it will add to the price of what is already a pretty expensive keyboard... (Yes, I speak from experience -- I bought a 4-pack of those pads and have two on the back of my iPad, and two on the back of this keyboard -- they make all the difference in the world!) The keyboard itself is not quite as "solid" feeling as the iPad. I don't mean it feels like it's poorly constructed, but it just feels a tiny bit "flimsy." Maybe flimsy is too strong a word... I just thought that it would feel as solid as the iPad itself, and it doesn't, quite. I think it will be just fine, though. Just don't expect something that feels like an Apple product, because it's not. One complaint I have, and this is not specific to this keyboard, is that the auto-correct feature disappears when you're typing on an external keyboard like this one... I have yet to figure out how (if it's at all possible) to re-enable it for an external keyboard. Maybe this won't bother you, but it does kind of bug me a bit. One other thing: If the keyboard is plugged in charging, the on/off switch seems to have no effect - you hit a key on the keyboard, even if the switch is in the off position, and the keyboard will wake-up and will take over your iPad's keyboard functions if it's within range. Not a huge deal, just be aware of it -- I thought my keyboard was broken, 'till I realized that it only did this when it was plugged in and charging. One last word -- I'm using this keyboard with a 3rd-generation iPad, so YES IT DOES work with the newest iPad. Overall, I'm extremely pleased with this keyboard. Is it worth $100? Hmmm... If you need an external keyboard to type on, then you absolutely owe it to yourself to look at this keyboard... I bought it, and I'm not excited about the $100 price-tag, but I will be keeping it because it's better than any other keyboard-cover I've yet seen. I would've given it 5 stars if it only cost, say, $75 or so. If you have any questions at all, please respond to this review and I'll be happy to answer them. UPDATE: I've ugraded this from a 4-star to a 5-star review. When you compare this keyboard to some of the garbage keyboards that are available out there, it deserves 5 stars. This thing has turned out to be well worth the extra $30 to $40 you have to spend on it. Compared to what else is available for the iPad, this thing is worth every penny. Plus, it's been four months since I bought it, and I've only charged it the one time! I use it every day, for an hour or two, and it still doesn't need to be charged! Its battery-life is truly amazing! UPDATE 2: The battery finally went dead -- after TEN MONTHS of daily use!! I charged it up once back when I bought it in April, 2012, and the battery finally died here at the end of February, 2013! If only all our electronic devices had a battery that would last so long!! ... show more
