Description

In August of 2012, Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit assembled in their home state of Alabama in front of a couple of sold-out concert halls to record their first live album, Live From Alabama. After years of hard touring, the critically-lauded band has gelled into a versatile rock and roll squad that is equally at ease performing Muscle Shoals soul to hardcore country to balls-out rock. Live From Alabama s tracklist mines some of Isbell s most popular songs and includes a pair of inspired covers in Neil Youngs Like a Hurricane and Candi Statons Heart on a String.

  • Captures the live show energy
Been a fan of Jason Isbell for a while. Finally got to see him and the 400 Unit live recently. Wow. This album is a similar set to the current (2022) tour and it's got the same energy. Love having it on vinyl.

  • Don't overlook Mr. Isbell and the 400 Unit
I'm in Southern California and this type of GREAT music just does not get radio airplay out here ( I sure hope it gets plenty in the south) This CD, THIS BAND and especially the FRONTMAN Jason Isbell never cease to BLOW ME AWAY with their talent and diversity when it comes to writing and recording music. If you've read the fist review you understand, Rock, soft rock, Blues, country a little feel of boogey and maybe a little woogey thrown in on Heart on a String. I would watch music award shows if they invited bands like this ( and other bands like Blackberry Smoke, Whiskey Myers etc.) instead of the acts that have already received big fame and recognition. WAKE UP !!! is what I say to the rest of the world who havn't yet found this incredible band and others like it that the talent just cannot be denied. Songs like " In a Razor Town" "Dress Blues" "Alabama Pines" show the fine level of this fine songwriters abilities LIVE or STUDIO. This is a fantastic Live recording, Mr. Isbell at this point in time is the Lone Guitarist in this group and due to his fine playing (and the flow of the keyboards) you really do not miss the second( or third) guitar. It's raw live but not lacking it actually is what live music is supposed to be when four musicians ( and a few HORNy guests) take the stage for a great live performance. You won't be disappointed in this live effort or any CD or song Mr. Isbell has recorded and released in the past. I recommend you buy anything that you can get your hands on that this fine musician / songwriter has released. ENJOY IT OVER AND OVER as I do. ... show more

  • Isbell's Best, Live
This record plays like a Jason Isbell "Greatest Hits Live" compilation, which is a good thing. What keeps this from being 5 stars for me is that the performances aren't THE definitive versions of the songs to hear... Don't get me wrong, I love live albums and I'm not one of those people who doesn't like it when the live rendition is different than the studio track, but the problem here is that, like Mike Cooley's solo live album, nothing new/revelatory is done with the tracks except in a few cases ("Cigarettes and Wine", and the horn section on "...Lonely Love" is pretty cool). And I believe that the studio versions, especially the DBT songs, were served better by the full DBT band (3 guitars) than the four-piece he has playing the songs here. The two covers are well-chosen and don't throw off the pacing or feel of the record. Isabell's such a great writer that the strength of the songs alone make this a worthy purchase for first-time listeners but for the best experience of his work to that point in his career, I'd recommend compiling a playlist of the original versions of the songs from this album. ... show more

  • It's Jason Isbell!
Live albums are my favorite. He doesn't quite melt down Hurricane like Neil Young but then who does? He's about the best thing out there for Americana right now. He's got so many new songs he needs a new "live" album. Would love to hear a live Super 8. Looking forward seeing him and the 400 Unit in Whitefish this summer. ... show more

  • Jason Isbell continues to excel under the mainstream radar
For me, this album serves two main purposes: it extricates his wonderful songs that he provided on previous DBT band albums (Decoration Day, Dank/Manuel, Goddamn Lonely Love, Outfit) and puts them on a single album under his name. Second, it provides a wonderful glimpse into how crisp the band is live and serves to help me get a live "fix" when I have to wait to see them live again. For the current fans who already possess his catalog, the addition of a track I never heard (TVA) and one I've heard them cover live but not previously recorded (Hurricane) makes the CD more than just a live record. For the Isbell fan, this is a must. For the interested newbie, this is as good a place to start as any. P.S. for the reviewers who say 'why doesn't country radio play Isbell,' I would say he doesn't need to be on lame-stream country radio. Instead, XM Radio needs to create an Americana channel instead of just having 5 or 6 bad country channels and play artists who write and perform their own songs that fall cross-genre. If it needs to be defined, this music is called Roots Rock, Alt-Country, Y'alternative, and most commonly Americana. And it's wonderful and real. ... show more

  • In a razor town ...
Working with his own group, Jason Isbell's work seems to have more room to breathe and develop than when he was fighting for space in the Drive By Trukers. I like DBT, but with 3 guitars and 4 writers and singers it could be hard to find enough room to stretch. Not to mention how all those guitars can crowd and push a song. But in these live versions of Isbell's songs like "Decoration Day," or "Danko/Manuel," the singing is better and more subtle, the songs played at a better pace and volume so that the vocals and solos can build and develop. This album was a revelation to me. Isbell continues to write thoughtful, well-wrought songs and his guitar playing so much more laid back and subtle. I especially like the back-to-back duo of "In a Razor Town" and "Alabama Pines." Lovely melodies, and songs full of feeling. I enjoy live albums, and though I hadn't followed Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, I thought I'd take a chance on this. I'm glad I did - lots of old DBT songs done better, and lots of songs new to me to discover and enjoy. ... show more
