The media could not be loaded. This train is excellent which is evidenced by all the positive reviews. The locomotive is very good quality- not cheap or lightweight. The front and back wheels on the various cars are independent of each other which allows them to follow the track better and not fall off. The detail on the train is also very good. The track is very easy to assemble and it holds together very well. We bought extra track to give it an additional curve. Also I like the features of the remote. It has a bell sound, a whistle sound and two conductor calls. One call is used when the train is stopped and another when it's running. The train goes forward and reverse smoothly. The train engine has a nice engine sound when standing still and another sound resembling a steam engine puffing when it moves. It also has a nice headlight and a smaller light in the engine compartment to the rear. We've had it running for about a week and run it for a few minutes each night. Not sure how long the batteries last but I already bought extra. This is a wonderful toy for a child to have running under the Christmas tree. My daughter puts mini dolls of Elmo and Big Bird in the cargo car and they go for a ride. It even makes me feel like a kid again. This is a great product that I expect will last a long time. For years I have been looking for a reasonably priced train to go under my Christmas tree. My old one was decent, but the track broke in a couple of places. The next one kept derailing, probably because it is on carpet. So I decided to go with Lionel. Which one, they can get pretty expensive. Decided on this one, and am I glad I did! First of all the track is plastic, but softer and so much easier to handle. I love the size options. Circle, rectangle or square. Square is perfect! Then it was train time. Around it went as smooth as can be. Remote is so handy and will be so much easier not only for me, but the grandchildren to operate. No more chasing the train to try to switch it off. Love the announcements, music and whistle. Just press a remote button. I don't think it is too loud, but Christmas at my house isn't the quietest so I am not concerned with that anyway. Great train. Overall this is a good train for the price. It looks great and the whole family loves it. The engine and cars are better quality than the track, which is a bit flimsy. It does not work well on carpeting with any cushion to it; it needs a harder surface. One of the track connectors snapped off during ther first disassembly and remains stuck in the adjacent section. Those 2 pieces must always go side- by- side now, and it creates a little gap but is still functional. The sounds are repetitive, but clear and good. My kids love controlling the speed and direction with the remote and loading little toys into the cargo car's bins while the train is in motion. I like that it makes a reminder noise if the remote is off but the train is still on. It hasn't worn out as many batteries as I expected. We got this at Christmas, left it up til February, and the kids have dug it out several times since just to play. I have a feeling I'll be looking for additional track this Christmas. ... show more

This train is perfect for our 3 year old. The remote is easy to use but also sturdy and childproof enough to where he won’t hurt it. I would give five stars, but its idling noise is pretty loud, and of course the running train is a bit noisy too. Check the dimensions because this train (locomotive and the cars) is also a little larger than I expected. ... show more

Set does NOT include straight track sections which must be ordered separately. Appearance and operation quality is very good, but an option to mute the sound would be nice. Overall, I am very satisfied with this Christmas train set.

    • Broke After One Season

Sadly my review is similar to the other one star reviews here. I bought it for Christmas ‘22 and it would not work for Christmas ‘23 (did not use it the whole year and stored it during the off seasons); I made myself half crazy changing all batteries and making sure the tracks were laid perfectly assuming it was user error on my part, but I experienced the same as everyone else rating it a one star—it will turn on and make noises, start to jerk forwards and then stop; the motor does not have enough strength to pull the cars. If you take all of the cars off, the motor will go a little further on its own, but not enough to get it fully around the track 😢 I’ll be researching other brands and hopefully find one that works better.     • Really nice and well done Christmas Train for under the tree

The media could not be loaded. The size is perfect, just big enough to make it a standout under the tree. Solid track connections. Remote control works very well, with options to have the engineer speak, ring the bell and blow the whistle. The whistle sound is particularly well done. It has a bit of echo that seems to do an ever so slight doppler shift. The tone is one people seem to want to mimic. When it is stopped, the sound is that of the old steam engines puffing. A really nice detail, classic and perfect. Also when stopped and the remote is turned off, the train beeps to remind you to turn it off too. Details of the train are also well done. Not only is there a headlamp, but also a lamp shining on the tinder car in back. It helps display the wood details. Both are LED, which helps with battery life. The cargo crates can either be displayed as closed and full, or you can flip them and fill them with something to display. The engine has working pistons, the Christmas decals on the other pieces, especially the caboose, are very nice. Finally, the train On/Off switch, barely noticeable right on top of the train for extremely easy access. You can tell some thought went into this set. Well done to Lionel and the team. ... show more

This is a great train set for kids I had a Bachman but I like this train set more because it stays on the track much better . I did order the extra track and it gives you more room for presents under the Christmas tree with train going around it also I have had this train set only a week but it seems well built so I am hoping it will last for years. ... show more
