Description

This practical, tutorial-style book uses the Kali Linux distribution to teach Linux basics with a focus on how hackers would use them. Topics include Linux command line basics, filesystems, networking, BASH basics, package management, logging, and the Linux kernel and drivers. If you're getting started along the exciting path of hacking, cybersecurity, and pentesting, Linux Basics for Hackers is an excellent first step. Using Kali Linux, an advanced penetration testing distribution of Linux, you'll learn the basics of using the Linux operating system and acquire the tools and techniques you'll need to take control of a Linux environment. First, you'll learn how to install Kali on a virtual machine and get an introduction to basic Linux concepts. Next, you'll tackle broader Linux topics like manipulating text, controlling file and directory permissions, and managing user environment variables. You'll then focus in on foundational hacking concepts like security and anonymity and learn scripting skills with bash and Python. Practical tutorials and exercises throughout will reinforce and test your skills as you learn how to: - Cover your tracks by changing your network information and manipulating the rsyslog logging utility - Write a tool to scan for network connections, and connect and listen to wireless networks - Keep your internet activity stealthy using Tor, proxy servers, VPNs, and encrypted email - Write a bash script to scan open ports for potential targets - Use and abuse services like MySQL, Apache web server, and OpenSSH - Build your own hacking tools, such as a remote video spy camera and a password cracker Hacking is complex, and there is no single way in. • Definitely good for beginners. Not so much for people that already know Kali tho.
This book is VERY good for beginners that's because it was written for beginners. If you already confidently know how Kali works or just Linux in general this isn't going to be much help to you. That being said when the 2nd edition comes out it will hopefully be more useful to advanced users. I would suggest picking up more of Occupy The Web's books as they are very good at hacking/social engineering and are willing to pass on their knowledge on said topics through their writings. ... show more

  • OTW (OccupyTheWeb - the author) is the best if you want to learn Ethical Hacking
If you want to get into security with Ethical Hacking, Pentesting, Red/Blue team work, you MUST learn Linux (particularly Kali or Parrot Linux), which come with hundreds of tools for legal White Hat hacking. OTW writes the best in-depth easy-to-understand primers on the market today. This is an excellent one to start with - along with Network Basics for Hackers, also by OTW. After that, you absolutely have to install & learn the Kali Linux distro, which comes complete with hundreds of intrusion testing tools & even a program with a series of exploit holes to practice on. Parrot Linux is the only other Linux distro that comes with similar tools, but Kali is the industry standard for professional White Hat hackers. Kali is based on Debian Linux & any Debian offshoot (like the popular Ubuntu) can be used if you have the patience to download all of the tools one at a time. But why bother when Kali comes with the entire Swiss Army Knife of intrusion & intrusion detection tools. This book is absolutely the place to start your Security career - or just learn the techniques for fun. Disclaimer: DON'T USE THIS TO INVADE ANY COMPUTER YOU ARE NOT LEGALLY PERMITTED TO INTRUDE ON. That will get you a very long jail term if caught. ... show more
