  • A Fine Piece of Advertising by AAA (bought for the air compressor)
I don't normally write Amazon reviews, but for this product I noticed that most of the 5 star reviews were by people who gifted this kit to their grandchildren without ever using or testing it and now have so much more "peace of mind". Reviews for products should not be based on how they make you feel, but on how they actually function. With that soapbox moment complete, I can say that while I bought this kit for my wife, I did open it and test some of the components, namely the air compressor. Now I know from experience that these little 12V compressors do work. My family took a lot of road trips when I was a kid and we always had one of these pumps in a homemade collection of emergency supplies that my dad put together. Granted, I never knew this until we blew a tire one time in Illinois. We put on the spare and got to the safety of a gas station, but our spare was pretty flat and their air station was broken. Somehow it became my job to sit outside in the heat watching our little compressor put around 20 psi back into the spare tire while my dad and brother sat in the A/C in the car and looked for nearby tire places on their phones. That brings me to a discussion of the compressor that comes with this kit. When I received this kit, I let a good deal of air out of one of my SUV tires and let the compressor run it back up to full (over 40 psi). Just like the one I had to use in Illinois, the compressor that comes with this kit is slow. It averages about 1 psi of inflation per minute, although the gauge does seem fairly accurate (+/- 2 psi). The cord is long enough to allow the compressor to reach all 4 tires of your vehicle. The compressor vibrates a lot while it is running. It vibrates so much that I had to hold it during operation for fear of it rattling around on the pavement and cracking the plastic housing. That's no big deal, as with these compressors you should monitor them for overheating after 10-15 minutes. This one ran well in around 10 minute intervals with a small raise in temperature, which is encouraging. Overall I was satisfied with the compressor, but I gave 3 stars because it, the jumper cables, and the flashlight are pretty much the only useful parts of the kit, and only somewhat so. Without a tire repair kit or a good spare, you better hope you only have a slow leak or the compressor won't do much good and you'll be calling AAA. The jumper cables work, but they are not UL-listed (not marked anywhere on the cables or clamps), which is not especially encouraging for electrical components. They do come with instructions on how to jump start, which is a nice touch. If these cheap cables fail, you'll probably be calling AAA. The flashlight works, but is cheaply made and I would not rely on it as your only source of light, especially if it is wet outside. The first-aid kit is just antiseptic wipes, band-aids, and like 1 sting relief pad. It comes with a written guide which is actually quite comprehensive, including general first aid steps for shock. This is in fact the only type of first aid that you'll be able to do for the type of injuries sustained in a serious accident, unless you can make a tourniquet out of 20-something band-aids. You'll need to call an ambulance and then call AAA for a tow. The utility knife housing is cheap garbage, but the blade is pretty sharp. The screwdrivers are pretty nice, but the slip joint pliers don't expand large enough to grip any significant engine components, nor are the handles long enough to provide significant leverage over anything stronger than the seal on a 2 liter soda bottle. Additionally, I can't think of any car issues that you can fix with just a screwdriver and/or pliers. For that you will need at minimum a socket set and maintenance experience, so you'll probably end up calling AAA. The whistle is not loud enough to be useful in an emergency. I'm similarly doubtful about the utility of the bungee cord and cable ties. The warning triangle is a bit wobbly and if you do use it, it will potentially end up run over by someone else or forgotten. There are 2 very small velcro patches on the back of the kit bag, but they are not large enough to allow the kit to attach to anything given its size and weight. My point in this lengthy review is that AAA has created a product that ensures a tidy profit and that in the end, you'll still need their services. I do have a bit more peace of mind knowing that my wife now has the capability to jump start her car if needed and perhaps fill up a tire with a slow leaking puncture, but I don't think it's as much peace as many of the 5 star reviewers. P.S. I want to say that the 250 psi rating of the air compressor is stupidly misleading. 250 psi is equivalent to over 575 feet of head in water. That means that this compressor should be capable of shooting a stream of water clear over a 50 story building, which is a ludicrous claim. That sort of pressure output would at the very least obliterate the valve stem of your tire and blow out the opposite sidewall. Nowhere in the user's guide for the compressor or on the compressor itself does it mention 250 psi. The gauge on the compressor only goes up to 100 psi, and the user's guide mentions not to "exceed the minimum rating of any component". Presumably the hose or some other small component can handle 250 psi, which is where that ridiculous figure comes from. ... show more

  • Great gift for a new driver!
My 21 year old son looked at numerous car kits and chose this one due to the items it came with. It was a gift for his 17 yr old sister. He wanted to make sure she had the things she would need if she ever had car problems. She LOVES it! They sat for an hour and went through all the items and talked about safety. ... show more

  • Amazing gift!
I bought these kits for Christmas, for three of my grandchildren who have vehicles. They were amazed at how much stuff is in these bags. I love that they will be a little more prepared should they have issues on the road.

This product has helped me through thick and thin. From when my tire went flat and I needed to air it up enough to get it to the nearest shop to when my battery when dead and I needed a jump. Heck it even helped my when my brother got stung by a bee. It’s everything you could need in case of an emergency. Definitely recommend putting this in any car cause you never know what’s going to happen. ... show more

  • Great For Peace Of Mind!
This item makes a great gift! It has all the essentials one may need in an emergency situation. Admittedly, the items are not high quality. However, if you have a car that runs well and just want peace of mind, this kit works great! I once returned from a vacation to find my car battery dead (my car gave me no trouble before that). I had a similar kit in my trunk. While the jumpers were thin and short, they did the job, and that's all I needed. I recently gifted it to a family member who has occasional car trouble. The kit is quite heavy, but it is fairly condensed, so it doesn't take up much space in your trunk. Buy this kit if you just want peace of mind. However, if you are serious about your cars, are a mechanic, even only as a hobby, or have a car that gives you a lot of trouble, you'd be better off buying the pieces one by one and putting together your own kit. ... show more

  • Caught Fire
This was well outside the return window. Purchased in 2019. But it’s an emergency kit. Not normally used immediately, but put in the trunk, just in case. Right? Fast forward to October 2023. Jumped a dead battery in a parking lot, today. Yes, we applied the cables correctly. Yes we followed the proper sequence with both cars turned off. As evidenced by the fact the dead battery started immediately after the jump. And then the clamps caught fire. The cable was too hot to touch and the flames were enough to melt the clamp vinyl. Fortunately, stopped the flames before it got out of hand and just managed to pull them off of both batteries. Despite being outside the refund/return window, Amazon refunded my gift card. What was difficult for the three levels of people to understand was I was much less concerned about cash back and much more concerned that some sort of warning go out. So use the jumper cables with caution. Maybe Inspector 42 was on a break. Back in 2019. ... show more
