  • Excellent, feature-rich phone without a high pricetag
Color: Black
This is a great phone, especially for the price range. My previous phone was the original LG Stylo so I was overdue for an upgrade. I like that they moved the stylus to the bottom. And I especially like that it detects when you remove the stylus and presents you with the obvious things you might want to do with the stylus. The screen is a nice large size for those of us that don't like to use Internet on small screens. It has a fingerprint reader but I'm not currently using it. I started to set that up but was impatient with process. It is either tricky to set up or it is just me. First phone I've had that had one. My previous phone used a micro sim card but this phone uses a nano sim card, so I did have to call my provider for a new nano sim card but they sent one right away with no charge. If your current phone uses a nano sim then it should be easy enough to just move from old to new phone. The nanosim and microsd card (if you use one) are inserted into a tray in the side. You use a special tool provided to open tray. Make sure you don't lose it. I do prefer this to my old phone where these cards went near battery. I don't believe that the battery can be replaced but that seems common now with most phones. The battery life is great. I've only been charging it every 4 days or so. The camera takes nice photos. The wifi works great. Wifi is dual band but I've only used the 5Ghz band so far. Since this is an Amazon edition, it is preinstalled with Amazon's various apps. If you use these apps then you will find it convenient but otherwise you might find these preloaded apps annoying. I use most of them. ... show more

  • excellent stylust phone phone
large screen, 1080P resolution, sub $150 new, stylus The only complaint I have is that sometimes there is some lag switching between apps, email, chat..., but hey for the price I understand probably there was no room for a speedier CPU also great for a kid to exercise letters with the stylus on the screen the fingerprint sensor on the back is very fast battery life exceptional camera meah i take sometie spictures of serial numbers on electronics cables... and it kind of has a hard time realizing i want to focus on a cable and not on what is behind it. but again for the price is excellent. the downside, after having this phone is that i'm tempted by a note phone maybe note 10 lite, but that is $500 and a note 10/20+ are well over $1000 so puting it into perspective i'll leave with a bit of slowness and keep the $1000 in my pocket ... show more

  • Good deal
Color: Black
Got it for my boyfriend because he had a stylo 1 for a few years and it was making his life a living hell. It's taller, but also skinnier than his old phone (stylo 1) and my phone (stylo 3). Battery life is pretty good, cameras are decent but nothing phenomenal. The weirdest thing to get used to is going from a button on the back of the phone to the side of it. Also, the back doesn't come off, there's a pinhole you insert a little key thing into to pop out the SD/SIM cards and then put it back in, which we both found rather difficult to get right because it's rather flimsy and the cards didn't want to stay put. Super easy to set up though, he has Verizon so we just had to stick his sim card in the phone and it was already downloading all his stuff from the cloud. We don't really have a use for the Amazon/Alexa add-ons, but the phone was on a great sale and it was the one he wanted, so all in all it was a great deal. ... show more

  • Buy it cheap if you can.
LG has a bit of an image problem right now. Their phones simply lack the features and functionality to compete with models at similar price points. The LG Stylo 5 is marketed as a $300 phone, but on Black Friday, I was able to snag it for just $150. In this review, I will judge it from both price points. CPU - Snapdragon 450 (1.8 GHz 8-Core): The Snapdragon 450 is one of the weakest 8-core CPUs offered by Qualcomm, but it is an improvement over the Snapdragon 435 seen in earlier LG low-end devices. The system-on-a-chip (SoC) supports more LTE bands, meaning cellular reception is better than - say - the LG X Venture (another $300 model they sold just a few years ago). That said, other phones in the $300 market are running Snapdragon 600-series chipsets. Performance of the LG Stylo 5 is adequate, helped by 3 GB of system RAM. Multitasking is functional with occasional lag. Don't expect to do hardcore gaming on it, though. Display - 6.2" 1080p (18:9): Everything looks great on the Stylo 5 in terms of picture and color quality, while the taller aspect ratio means the phone doesn't feel overly big in the hands. The ambient light sensor ensures brightness always remains at an acceptable level, and it's legible enough in direct sunlight. Software - Android 9.0: All versions of the Stylo 5 run Android 9.0, but the Amazon version changes some of the pre-installed apps. For anyone confused by the changes, know that Google Play is still at the center of this phone's operation. Anything you don't like can still be disabled, but despite the 32 GB of onboard storage within the phone, 16GB is used out of the box. You only have 16GB available to install additional apps, and a microSD card (up to 2TB) is recommended for saving your pictures, videos, and music. Cameras - 13MP/5MP: This is perhaps the worst offender on the device. Neither camera works well. Image stabilization is poor, light capture is worse, and don't even think about zooming in. My problem is I have come from phones at the $250 and even the $200 mark (such as the Sony Xperia L2 and L1 respectively) with leagues better cameras. Nor can I blame the CPU for this because the other phones I mentioned were running Mediatek 6737T CPUs - with half as many cores to them. Sound Quality: The earpiece may be one of the best I have used on a phone ever. The bottom-firing speaker, however, leaves a lot to be desired. My gripe with it is that the problem is purely software-side. If you listen close enough, you can actually hear where the sound driver is trying to amplify the high-end, and that's what is distorting the audio quality. If LG could push a firmware update to the phone, that issue could very well be fixed. As for the headphone jack, it's there and has all the expectations of a headphone jack. LG adds DTX Audio enhancements to any pair of headphones you plug in, and can make a $10 pair of headphones sound like a $50 pair - but again, that depends entirely on how you configure it. Battery - 3500 mAh: This battery usually lasts me 24-48 hours on a single charge (assuming 6-12 hours screen on time). Charging over the USB-C port maxes at 18W (9V, 2A) with the supplied fast charger. The LG Stylo 5 also supports USB-Power Delivery. You can plug other devices into the phone over Type-C to charge them from the phone's battery, or to power external devices like microphones and USB keyboards. Misc. Stuff: To make the Stylo 5 more competitive, LG threw in a fingerprint scanner, an NFC chip (for mobile payments), a Gyroscope, a Magnetometer (that's digital compass), and a built-in stylus pen (hence the name). The question is, do all of these additions add up to the $300 MSRP? You'll have to decide for yourself. Conclusion: At $300, this phone represents the very bottom of the midrange. You will get better performance from a comparable Motorola or Samsung device (though you will lose certain features) or do even better by spending just a tiny bit more on a comparable Sony Xperia, Google a-series device, or Xaomi/Hauwei (if outside the US). That said, if I am treating this as a $150 device, it then becomes the best phone I have ever owned. You'd be hard pressed to find anything at that price point running a decent 8-core CPU with a working fingerprint scanner, NFC chip, 1080p display, the latest version of Android, and USB-C. ... show more
