  • Plenty of things are going with the new LG G4
~~~UPDATE AFTER OWNING FOR 3 MONTHS~~~ 11/26/2016 Edit: Works on Tmobile's 4G LTE. Skip to the bottom for instructions. It's a sleek and stylish phone with plenty of things going for it, especially it's camera. ***PLEASE go to you're local phone or electronic to store to see this phone for yourself. It's your money so it will ultimately be your opinion that will decide if you like it or not*** This is an in depth review of my thoughts, opinion and experience. If you don't like reading then skip to the bottom, but if you're like me and want something more than what every person keeps repeating on every review then continue reading. ~~I will be periodically updating this review as time goes on.~~ Day 1: The phone just arrived today and I've been 100% satisfied with my purchase. My first impressions was wow, the vendor, Wireless Place, actually sent a USA wall plug adapter. No clue of it's quality, definitely won't be trying it on my new phone but it's the thought that counts so they get kudos for that. The phone comes in a nice white and red box. I read another persons review that they didn't get the Quadbeats 3 headphones in their box, but mine came with it. Side note, those headphones are the nicest pair I've ever had. No clue about the microphone quality though. Back to the phone, it's very sleek and surprisingly light. I've only owned 1 smartphone before this, which was the Xperia Z and it feels lighter. The phone is curved so it feel amazing to hold. Coming from a square phone to this, it's like heaven. The leather back definitely adds style, grip and quality. If you don't mind that it's real cow leather I would recommend you get one in your choice of color. Be warned though, some of the different leather types also have different texture. The brown/tan I got, has a smooth finish. No clue about others, as I've said, please go to your local stores and see this phone for yourself. On the first startup, it runs a little warm. That's understandable since it's using a lot of processing power to boot everything and set things up for the first time. After that, I haven't experienced any heating issues. I did notice the phone get a little choked up on a couple points but that too is understandable since I was installing all my apps at one time. That issue hasn't reoccurred, either. The screen looks fantastic, and looks great in direct sunlight too. I love the UI and the icons of this phone. Usually I hate whatever preinstalled apps phone makers install, e.g. Sony, but LG did a fantastic job. The ones that they've installed are actual apps that I'll use like the notification board that tells you the weather as well as other info or the LG health that counts steps. Now for the best part and what many of us are intrigued about, which is the 16 megapixel f1.8 camera. It's safe to say that it's probably THE BEST or Top 2 of it's kind. I'm an amateur photographer and I shoot manually with film camera so I know my way around. This camera won't replace your fancy DSLR but it sure will put your point and shoot ones to shame. I need more time to play around with the manual mode but simple/auto produces some nice pictures. On top of that LG did a fantastic job in arranging the UI for the manual mode. All in all this phone is worth it, especially since this is $100-200 cheaper than other flags ships, I'm looking at you Sony. If you're like me and you don't upgrade your phone every year, then this phone might be it for you. Not only does it have expandable microSD storage, but also a removable battery. This is big coming from an Xperia Z which does have a microSD storage but not a removable battery. Using my Z for 2 years has made the battery inefficient, but now no longer do I have to worry. I can just go order another battery pack if anything happens to my LG G4 unlike Sony, Apple or Samsung. As of yet, I have no gripes besides the speakers being in the back. We will see if this remains true after the 1 week, 1 month and 6 month updates In short, this phone is great. I don't care about "premium build quality" (Glass and Aluminium). I care about practicality and this phone hits it right on the mark. If you get the leather back, it feels 10 times more premium then any other phone I've touched. The camera is fantastic, the screen is bright and colorful, the curved nature of the phone makes its to hold and on top of that it's at a great price compared to other brands. Also more importantly it works in the US with Tmobile! ***Edit T-Mobile 4G LTE setup(Step by step pics included): Yes in fact it does use T-mobile's 4G LTE data. You just need to manually set it in your data settings by choosing the network that says "GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto". Then click on "Access point names" then click "T-mobile GPRS" and finally click the VPN. Change the address to "fast.t-mobile.com". MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE DASH between Tmobile or it wont work. Then press the settings on the top right corner and save.*** ~~~UPDATE after 3 months~~~ 11/26/2015 As it stands, this phone is still great! Even though LG has released the V10 which updates and improves the things that this phone "lacked" such as a heartbeat sensor, fingerprint lock, manual video control and such. I still believe this phone is a great contender still. Most of the new features on the V10 aren't something I need. The phone has survived its fair share of drops, thankfully I have a Caseology Wavelenght case, which it does it's job. If you're experiencing charging issues with the phone, where it keeps disconnecting a certain positions, try buying new micro USB cables. I bought a 5 pack of Anker micro-usb cables and they've fixed the problems. The connectors on the micro-usb heads probably get worn down from all the connecting and disconnecting that it can't make a proper contact to charge. Other than that, I've found no issue with the phone. It'd be nice to get the Marshmallow update, but I don't mind. Lollipop 5.1 is very stable so I can't complain. ... show more
  • I loved this phone
I loved this phone. Excellent phone which has removable battery, sd card slot, outstanding camera even compared to 2016 flagships (still one of the best as i'm writing this review), the brown leather back looks different and i liked it. Performance is smooth for my usage, i don't play games. Everyday average use is smooth and hardly i noticed any lag during my 10 month usage. No complaints about the seller or the shipping, i had a great experience. Now let me tell why i hate the phone i bought, i bought it without warranty, took a risk - i agree. And by 10 months, the phone went into boot loop. A hardware defect in the logic board (search for it in google). It is a known defect and the later batch from LG does not have this issue. I got the earlier batch (September 2015). LG replaces the phone if it is within warranty. What happens if there is no warranty? answer is, can't do much, LG doesn't even service my mobile even if i'm ready to pay for it. I love this phone so much that i repeatedly contacted LG customer care to find if there is a way i can get my logic board replaced. the only option they suggest is to contact the LG office/customer care from the country it is manufactured. Mine is from korea, bought it in amazon USA. So i had to contact LG - Korea. i quit. Buy it if the seller can guarantee that the model is from the later batch which does not have this hardware defect. you wont regret. but if you are not sure, stay away from this. ... show more
  • Great phone!
Bought mine through "Quality Deals". Received within 3 days of ordering brand new in retail box. Comes with phone charger and headphones in box. GSM bands: 850/900/1800/1900 WCDMA bands: 850/900/1900/2100 LTE: 700 (b28)/200 (B17)/800 (B20)/850 (B5)/900 (B8)/1700 (B4)/1800 (B3)/1900 (B2)/2100 (B1)/2600 (B7) I have ATT in the US which uses 850 and 1900 (non-LTE) and 700, 850, 1900, 1700/2100. All work without issue. Note:Buying the international version will exclude you from the US promo expiring June 30th 2015 for 32GB SD card, extra battery and battery charger. To qualify, you must buy a carrier branded phone from an approved retailer. As to the phone, I'm coming from an HTC one M7, and the most striking change is the size. I'm still getting used to it, but it's manageable and so far, worth the added screen real estate. Camera is standout as other's have noted. I haven't seen a cell phone camera perform this well in such a variety of conditions. Screen is crisp, bright, and videos pop on the display. Viewing in direct sunlight isn't a problem. Speed: I haven't done anything to push the phone, but launching maps, swiping through apps, etc all execute instantly without any noticeable stutter. Battery is solid, not exemplary, but I can easily get a full day of heavy usage & all radios on (~3-4 hours screen on time) and is better than it was on my M7. Software: Knock on is nice to wake the phone with two taps on the screen, similarly, sliding your finger down from the top of the screen when off displays the notification bar to quickly check time/notifications without wasting battery. In the notification tray, I don't like the band of quicklaunch icons (which you can't reorder), the brightness slider, and volume slider. **Edit** You can adjust/remove the sliders and buttons, scroll to the far right of the quicklaunch buttons and click edit** They take up a ton of space and make choosing notifications when in landscape more difficult than necessary. Double tap volume down when phone is off to launch camera is nice. Dual window... I haven't used much as the apps it works with are limited. I haven't used other LG apps at all and have uninstalled what I could. Bloat is limited to LG bloat only and can all be disabled. Far less intrusive than carrier options. I'd like to be able to do more from my lock screen - with slide-lock enabled it shows notifications you can swipe away, shows the clock/date, quicklaunch for camera, and emergency dialer. Buried in the menu is an option to enable an "if lost please call/emergency" number on the lock screen as well. Lollipop: Notifications on Lollipop aren't ideal - I don't want popups for all apps and I want better control over sound notifications! - but this is a lollipop issue not LG. Disabling your lock code based on geography, wireless, bluetooth, & face recognition is great - although face unlock only works about 60% of the time for me and takes ~3 seconds to work. Hardware: I bought the brown leather version. The leather feels great and the phone very slim. You'd never know the back comes off as it's very tightly integrated. Feel is comfortable in hand (I'm 6' male, but have small hands) and the buttons located centrally on the back of the phone are a plus as they're easy to reach and all in the same place. Inclusion of infrared sensor is nice for controlling TV's etc - although I haven't had time to play with this feature. FM radio (only with headphones) is a nice addition as well. Overall very happy with this phone in all areas, I can't say there are any concessions that can't be fixed in later software updates from LG, Google, or potentially through rooting. I would recommend this phone to anyone OK with a 5.5 inch display looking to buy right now. ... show more
