My son and I built this Super Mario Lego set together, as this isn't our first one. This set requires the use of the app, which makes it extremely easy to put together. This is the first time I've seen the Boomerang Bro included in a Lego set, and it does come with another Piranha plant (but I think we already have one of these), but I like how this plant allows you to jump on one side of the see-saw, and it will bring the plant facing the character. This way, it gives a sense of danger that the plant can come back and attack your character. If you have more than 1 character, you can take turns jumping on your side of the see-saw and constantly move the plant back and forward while the characters accumulate coins! There is a little springy-mushroom, which doesn't actually propel your character very far, but it does give the illusion that the character is using this mushroom to get into the cloud platforms, where you can face off against the Boomerang Bro. It's a little tricky to keep the characters balanced on the cloud platforms, especially the one that moves back and forward, but it's a challenge and you do get coins the longer they stay on the platform. Finally, there is Big Spike, which is more of a set piece, instead of a new character, but he does prepare to throw a log at you (just like in the game) when a character stands on the platform in front of him. In order to avoid the log, the character needs to pay close attention as they step off the platform because the log will come right at them. Again, this is a lot of fun and it's a welcome addition to any Super Mario Lego fan's collection. ... show more

The media could not be loaded. My 7 year old loves legos and that’s by design: I’ve been forcing him into Lego fandom since he was born. Any time anyone ever asked what they should get him for his birthday/Christmas/anytime my answer would always be “Legos!” I wanted him to love Legos because I love legos. So I’m always in the market for a lego set. I chose this because we don’t have any Mario in our collection. Note: I did not know this set is an expansion set and needs a starter set to really work as intended. When I opened the box after delivery I could not find the instructions anywhere. There is a reason for that: this set comes with no printed instructions whatsoever. The instructions could be found and downloaded on the Lego website. Now this may not seem like a big deal to most people but it was a HUGE deal for me. I use my Lego building as an escape from the stressors of life and to unwind/decompress/relax. It’s a time when I put my phone out of reach and earshot so I don’t have to be tempted out of my zen state to check notifications. The absolute last thing I want to do when building is have my phone in my lap and my eyes glued to the screen! Defeats the whole purpose for me! Now that issue aside, I really have only good things to say about this set. As per usual with Lego brand legos, the instructions were clear and easy to follow, the pieces were all there and they fit well together. Even without the starter set I enjoy this expansion set just for its aesthetic appeal alone. It also has several moving parts that make it fun and enjoyable. My son loves Legos and has tons of different sets. He has two Super Mario sets, so I thought this would be a nice add-on to those to try out. In these sets, you build small parts of the Mario world and these worlds have all the typical enemies, objects, and traps you would find in the game. If you are a Mario fan, then you will like these sets. They really are sets that are just as fun playing with as building. What’s nice about them is that they connect together really well so they don’t fall apart unless you play with them roughly. One thing I would like to stress is that this Mario set is an extension. It does not include Mario, it is intended to extend one of the existing courses. So make sure you have one of the existing courses first before you buy this. A Super Mario set is no fun without Mario! Otherwise, this is a really fun add on to other Mario sets. The course is fun and it holds up really well to non-rough play.
