Description

“Castaway, you should know the truth.” As Link, you awaken in a strange land away from Hyrule, where animals talk and monsters roam. To uncover the truth behind your whereabouts and rouse the legendary Wind Fish, explore Koholint Island and all its trap-ridden dungeons, reimagined in stunning detail for this new release of one of the most beloved The Legend of Zelda games. Along the way, you’ll meet a hilarious assortment of charming characters to which you’ll never want to say goodbye. In this new version of the game, the classic soundtrack has been reborn with new arrangements, and now you can equip more items at once, review key conversations, and navigate the map in new ways. Try your hand at the renovated mini-games to earn dolls based on the Super Mario series or Chamber Stones. These unusual stones can be used to arrange your own Chamber Dungeons; each one is a puzzle in and of itself. Place chambers from dungeons found throughout the game on a series of objective-based grids. Where should the bosses go? How do you get from the entrance to the stairwell? They’re your dungeons, so arrange them however you see fit. To earn more Chamber Stones, you must conquer the main adventure’s dungeons and mini-games or tap any amiibo featuring a The Legend of Zelda character to unlock Chambers exclusive to amiibo. 1993-2019 Nintendo. • One of the better classic game remake done faithfully correct!
Platform: Nintendo Switch Edition: Standard
Wow!!! When I first saw the announcement trailer for this game, I was absolutely SHOCKED! Why? Link's Awakening is a CLASSIC Gameboy game from the 90s that I played and absolutely ENJOYED. After playing, enjoying and beaten the first 3 Zelda games: The Legend of Zelda (NES), The Adventure of Link (NES) and A Link to the Past (SNES) which by the way were groundbreaking games at the time back then. 2 years later after A Link to the Past, Nintendo released Link's Awakening for the GameBoy. I was very intrigued that Nintendo would release a Zelda game for the GameBoy because I wondered how Nintendo could transform the magic of Zelda games into a portable gaming device. I remembered purchasing Link's Awakening just 3 months after it was released in 1993 because I was doing landscaping jobs for my neighborhood and saving up money from mowing lawns, raking leaves, trimming bushes, etc. Games were insanely expensive back then and it can be difficult to decide which game to purchase that will be worth your money's worth. I purchased Link's Awakening from Toysrus store, rushed home and booted up the game. The opening scene of the game instantly had me excited and I was blown away how detailed it looked! I went ahead and beat the game over the course of 3 days because the game was THAT good. Plus, I absolutely loved exploring every inch of the game as well. I loved this game so much that I even rebought the game again on the GameBoy Color which was titled: 'Link's Awakening DX' and again for the Nintendo 3DS via eshop. So, you can imagine how insanely excited I was when I saw the opening scene of Link's Awakening when Nintendo revealed the game during Nintendo Direct. I couldn't believe Link's Awakening was getting a remake for the Nintendo Switch! Plus, I was happy that Nintendo released this remake at the right time because Link's Awakening can tide me over while waiting for Breath of the Wild sequel releasing on the Switch in the future. Everything about this Link's Awakening is absolutely 100% faithful to the original gameboy game and the graphics just make this game even more appealing to see. It reminds me of Zelda Wind Waker for the Nintendo Gamecube because so many fanboys were absolutely upset about how the graphics look for Wind Waker. Eventually, Wind Waker ends up becoming one of the best Zelda games to be released since Ocarina of Time. All the same fanboys that were very angry and upset at the graphics, they suddenly forgotten that they judged the game so quickly during the reveal and they suddenly say how much they love the graphics in Wind Waker, LOL!! Wind Waker also went on to become one of the favorites Zelda games to play in the speed running community. Anyways, if you haven't ever played Link's Awakening, then I strongly recommend that you buy this game ASAP because you wont regret it one bit. If you have played Link's Awakening, guess what? I still recommend buying this remake as well. If you enjoyed or didn't fully enjoy Link's Awakening on the GameBoy or Gameboy Color or Nintendo 3DS virtual game via eshop, then this remake will definitely make you love Link's Awakening. Forgive me for the long/boring review I've just typed up and buy this game asap! ... show more

  • UPDATED! Worth full price! A nearly perfect remake of the original! UPDATED! Worth full price! A nearly perfect remake of the original!
Platform: Nintendo Switch Edition: Standard
Update (2019-09-23): I've had a chance to play through a significant portion of the game, I have a few notes to add: 1) The frame rate issues are a bit worse than I initially experienced. In the few parts of the game where it runs at 60 FPS, the game FEELS perfect. Fluid, detailed, and rich. But many parts, especially in the over world, there's parts that just aren't optimized and the frame rate drops, making it feel unpolished. That doesn't diminish the overall quality of the game, but it's an annoyance that should have been polished up before release. 2) This release sets a new bar for retro game remakes. This is a fairly short game compared to modern releases, but the experience and art direction make it well worth the retail price. However, if Nintendo doesn't inform us of a Link to the Past remake soon, there's going to be a lot of VERY disappointed fans. The treatment of keeping the most important parts of the original intact, while making minor improvements to modernize it, was absolutely the right decision, and I hope other studios will follow suit here! 3) Perfect game for kids. My daughter has always been a bit nonplussed at retro games, but seeing this release has made her excited about playing the other older Zelda games. (Previously only played Breath of the Wild). This is such an easy way to connect with you kids on something you loved as a child! Well... if you're of a certain age. :) -- This is a straight up, almost exact remake of the original game with a few minor differences. The claymation-like graphics look incredible! The only minor quibble is that the frame rate is inconsistent in several areas, which I expect to be fixed with software updates. If you loved the original, you will love the remake. If you want to feel even more nostalgic, get a retro controller for the switch, like this one: https://www.amazon.com/8Bitdo-SF30-Controller-Windows-macOS-Android/dp/B0748S3GXG/ref=as_li_ss_tl?crid=1XR9Q41TCYYZ5&keywords=snes+switch+controller&qid=1568975468&sprefix=SNES+sw,aps,222&sr=8-1&linkCode=ll1&tag=deepr-20&linkId=cc1ed4b382e22f054c5d4509224d67ed ... show more

  • Great Zelda Video Game - Safe For All Ages, Enjoyable Content and Very Addictive
Platform: Nintendo Switch Edition: Standard
As I’ve mentioned in other reviews, I love my Nintendo Switch! It’s perfect for both TV gaming and handheld play. As an adult gamer, though, I tend to prefer games with more mature themes—violence, darker narratives, and all the stuff that’s definitely not kid-friendly. So, finding a game that my niece and nephew can play when they visit is always a challenge. Let me be clear: I absolutely loathe games featuring cutesy animals, “BFF” storylines, or anime aimed at toddlers. When this game was recommended to me, I was excited to give it a try. I grew up loving the old 8-bit Legend of Zelda, but honestly, I’ve grown tired of the overplayed retro 8-bit aesthetic. However, this game seemed to strike a balance: it offered puzzles, journeys, and characters reminiscent of Zelda, but with a lighthearted tone suitable for kids. The “bad guys” are tame enough for younger players, and there’s none of the saccharine sweetness I usually avoid. After buying it, I decided to test it out myself—after all, I’d spent more than I’d planned, so I figured I should at least give it a shot. What I didn’t expect was to get completely hooked. Yep, this so-called kids’ game reeled me in. Thankfully, it avoids the overly cute tropes, but it’s engaging enough to keep even an adult gamer entertained. The real test, though, was the niece and nephew—and they loved it! Their parents were thrilled, and I earned some major cool points. This game is definitely not just for kids. If you’re skeptical like I was, give it a shot—you might find yourself as hooked as I was! ... show more

  • A beautiful remake to one of the "classic" Zelda games and as such has lot of play value. A beautiful remake to one of the "classic" Zelda games and as such has lot of play value.
Platform: Nintendo Switch Edition: Standard
Legend of Zelda - Links Awakening This is a remake of the black & white version of the game made for the Game Boy System. The game was released in 1993. Actually I would better state this is a complete make over that maintains the story line and game themes of the origional and add a few innovations not present in the "first edition' of the game. The music plays an important part in the game and was quite memorably. I was very fond of the Game Boy version and will ruefully admit it was one of the few Zelda game I every finished. How does this version stack up against the 1993 version? It's like watching a favorite show on wide screen in color when you had only seen it on a small black and white screen previously. The technology and graphics from 1993 to 2019 is like night into day. Sure there is a reminiscences of "that's not how it was done back then" but then again when you see the graphics on the new version - Wow! The music is still similar but again it is upgraded with the technology available today. You didn't get much fidelity out of those Game Boy speakers. No, this is not in the same league of BOTW nor is it intended to be - sorry no paraglide here. It a beautiful remake to one of the "classic" Zelda games and as such has lot of play value for new fans, young and old. Now we need an updated Players Guide the game! ... show more

  • A good remake, but maybe wait for the price to drop
Platform: Nintendo Switch Edition: Standard
If you have never played Link's Awakening before, imagine a 2-D game in the style of Link to the Past, but with several offbeat moments. While the release on the Game Boy required some creative workarounds (ie mapping every item including the sword and shield), it was a rather fun experience. This remake was developed by the same team that did A Link Between Worlds, and with this remake comes some nice quality-of-life improvements. With there being four face buttons instead of two, the sword , shield, and dash boots have normal buttons and do not need to be remapped. As such, you can map the other items to your heart's delight without worrying about defense. In addition, the power bracelet is always equipped. For those who have already played the game on GB/GBC, there are more heart containers, and bosses deal less damage. One could consider this dumbing down the game, but I found that with the small screen on the GB version, it was easy to get cornered by the boss and lose too much health. As to whether you should buy it, I would give a qualifying yes, dependent on whether you have played the GB version or not. If you have, I'm not sure if it's worth it at the full price. The GBC one is available for $5 on 3DS Virtual Console, and is essentially the same game. Apart from the quality-of-life improvements, you're basically paying for a new coat of paint here. While it does look nice, it does suffer from some odd performance issues when out in the field. Furthermore, for the most part, they just used the same translation from the original release, which I found to be somewhat lacking. The original translation was very short and concise, due to the limited space available on the Game Boy. With the Switch, there are no such limitations. I know that old fans might complain due to the nostalgia factor, but i would have redone the translation here, or expanded upon it. However, if you haven't played the GB/GBC version, by all means get it. It's a fun release with just enough to keep the typical Zelda fan happy. But wait until the price goes down, or better yet, play A Link Between Worlds. ... show more

  • Fantastic old school Zelda game, perhaps a little too short however.
Platform: Nintendo Switch Edition: Standard
If you've ever liked a Zelda game, you're gonna love this one. This is a remake of the original Game Boy game with the same name, that was modeled to be a portable, smaller version of the SNES title, Link to the Past. I'd recommend picking this up regardless of having played the original or not if you're a fan of Zelda games, there is no overarching story that is needed to enjoy this one although technically Nintendo has begun to form a (very loose) timeline of the series. This game is also one of the few in the series that deviates storywise from the "rescue the princess in the castle" trope, although there is some rescuing to be had along the way. This one is likely to be more digestible to kids as it has a little more direction to it than the newest Zelda title, Breath of the Wild. I personally loved that title but had a nephew who maybe had too short of an attention span to really stick with the game long term. I think this Zelda is better in small bites so might be a better fit for the likes of him. The only real downfall of the game is that I wish there was more of it. If you're only buying one Zelda game for the Switch, I'd probably lean more towards Breath of the Wild as there is simply more content. You can spend hundreds of hours on that game and still be far from 100% completion. This is maybe a 12-16 hour game for those inexperienced with it. Link's Awakening is far more linear and easier and honestly could be completed by an experienced gamer over the course of a weekend. I almost have this game beat and am probably under 10 hours played but I also remember much of the secrets that normally take some time to figure out. ... show more

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening – A Timeless Classic Reimagined The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening on the Nintendo Switch is an exceptional remake that beautifully captures the magic of the original Game Boy classic, while also introducing modern enhancements. The game is a wonderful mix of nostalgia and new life, providing both veteran players and newcomers with an unforgettable experience. Visuals and Art Style The standout feature of this remake is its charming art style. The game adopts a unique, toy-like aesthetic with diorama-style visuals that make every part of Koholint Island feel like a living, breathing diorama. It’s a small touch, but it adds a nice bonus for fans looking to get even more out of the game. Music and Sound The music in Link's Awakening is another highlight. The reimagined soundtrack uses orchestral arrangements that elevate the melodies from the original, while staying true to the nostalgic tunes players remember.
