The waist is true to size ...but these are not synthetic, fast dry material. Lee makes an action variety that might be better for hand washing while traveling...I have not worn those. These shorts are very comfortable and live up too their description. They run true to size. My only concern is the zippers seem cheap and do not operate smoothly. Other than that I am happy with them.

Lee Extreme Motion (cargo and plain front) are the only shorts I buy now. They fit great and the stretch fabric is VERY comfortable. Lots of colors and I love the phone pocket on cargo shorts.
