  • Only beeps doesn't say the letter
Was highly disappointed thinking maybe they would teach the phonics of the letters in those two options for the words. Kids still learning words won't know your looking for fox instead of jox

  • Great learning toy
This is a great additional tool I used for homeschooling. My son is a kinesthetic learner so I’m constantly looking for ways we can utilize hands on learning. Language arts is one particularly difficult subject to be able to find hands on learning tools so when I found this I was ecstatic! I just wish it had more words. My son used it a lot in the beginning but now he pretty much knows all the words because there was not very many. I’m now using it with my 5 year old so it’s still getting used and we like it, just wish it had more words. ... show more

  • kids were not a fan
I bought this word whiz electronic flash card for my middle and oldest son. For my oldest to work on his spelling and middle son to work on vocabulary. Unfortunately this quickly turned into how to cheat the game but randomly pressing various buttons to get points and within seconds I heard a parent's worst fear "I am bored!". The thought behind the design was well thought but didn't keep my 5 year old's or 7 years old attention much longer. I did have to find batteries for this handheld word game, I do wish it was more interacting and batteries were included. I am a huge fan of Learning Resources products, unfortunately this was not on our top list. I would still recommend giving it a try, you never know maybe your children will enjoy it. ... show more

  • Poor Screen
Got this for practicing spelling concepts for my 6 year old son for Christmas. The concept is what I expected. There are three levels. The first level is basic three-letter words. Level 2 is four-letter words. Level three is four-letter words with special sounds. The quality is less than what I expected. While the "game" is to see how many fill-in-the-blanks you can choose correctly in a sixty-second time span, there is nothing that indicates that time is running. There is only a sound when you switch between levels. On certain levels it makes a tic-tock sound when starting, but not always. Additionally, it is *VERY* difficult to read the screen. Some of the lights aren't as bright as the others in the "bars." And of course, similar to cheap calculator screens, if the light hits it just right, all the "bars" seem as though they are equally lit. The lettering isn't like the one pictured. Because portions of the screen do not light at all, I am hoping that we got a dud and have requested a replacement item to be shipped to us so we can give it another go. My son likes the concept and is content to play it except for the pesky problem of it not working. BTW, it uses 3 AAA batteries. UPDATE: As usual, Amazon.com replaced the item without any hassles and the new item works great--very pleased. ... show more

  • Plastic shouldn’t be the best part of this device
I’m trying to use this as a tool for homeschooling my child. I am looking for many resources. I agree now that I’ve tried it and all, that it would be helpful to say the word maybe? Especially for level 1? It says 5+ but my husband and I agree this is more like 7…..8+ either that or it needs more to it. I don’t like the beeping. The screen display is crap. Honestly after looking at customer questions I thought the service customer service was bologna. I was excited about this but I don’t think it’s going to help much. ... show more

  • Awesome device!
My kids love this device! They enjoy learning to problem solve which letter makes the word. We do not use the timer yet as they are not ready for that but their understanding of words has gotten a lot better because they are constantly playing with this. It's also small and light enough to carry with to places. The only issue I have is turning off the sound I struggle putting it in mute mode but honestly it's nice to hear the positive dings when they get the word right. ... show more

  • Well worth it for me
I bought this for my dear elderly wife who has Parkinson's disease and memory problems to while away some time between other activities (we are not TV watchers). Amazon sent one which did not work at all. It was returned according to their instructions. A new one was received within 48 hours (I'm sure the one I returned hasn't arrived there yet) and it works like a charm as advertised, just what I wanted. Be sure to have some 3A batteries on hand - they are not provided, which was why I rated it 4 rather than 5 stars. I'd give Amazon 5 stars for their service, however. ... show more
