  • Don’t waste money on the reactor pods.
Style: bubbling volcanic eruptions
The reactor pods don’t foam. They melt and there is a creature in there that you used to get for a quarter in a machine at a diner or whatever. The volcano is fine and comes with directions for a mixture that actual bubbles/foams. SOOO glad I didn’t buy additional reactors.

  • So fun!
Style: bubbling volcanic eruptions + Reactor Pod
We've used this again and again. I like that it comes with instructions to try different volcano methods, besides putting in the critter surprises. Though my kids do love collecting them as well. PRO TIP: use very warm water to open up the critter balls easier.

  • Not very much bubbling
Style: bubbling volcanic eruptions + Reactor Pod
Not a ton of bubbling and "lava" and the volcano was smaller than I thought but still very good quality

  • Volcano is a winner, beaker creature not so much
Style: bubbling volcanic eruptions
So, short story version, don't waste money in extra beaker creatures. They are basically just overpriced bath bombs. The volcano, however, is PERFECT and comes with uber easy instructions on making traditional chemical reactions. Details: To start, the volcano itself is the perfect size. Small enough to fit nicely on a cookie sheet and to allow for reactions using small quantities of reagents. But also big enough to feel substantial, durable and looks good in pictures ;) Most other kits are a mold kit to make plaster volcano's that have confusing directions and are easy to mess up. Even a successful mold can really only be used a half dozen times or do before breaking down. Cleanup on this thing is my FAVORITE part! Its smooth high quality plastic, and literally ready for a new round with a simple 20 sec water rinse. We've already run about 10 different variations in the first couple of days we had it and it still looks brand new. On to the actual experience! So we did the first attempt using the included beaker creature but since its literally no different than a bath bomb, the chemical reaction was very underwhelming. Only about half the shell even dissolved and the toy is super basic, like 25cent machine toy level quality. However, the package comes with simple instructions for traditional baking soda + vinegar experiments which work great. My daughter is 6 and loves science subjects so while we started out just playing around with the actual reactions, I have already planned out several lessons for the upcoming school from home (joy....ugh) semester. There's color mixing (food color into the vinegar), chemistry (reaction of reagents, alternative reagent experiments), geology (anatomy of volcanos and ecological impact) and I'm sure other avenues to explore. Bottom line, absolutely worth every penny, but set the right expectations with the beaker creature. For older kids (or really clever ones) maybe even talk about the difference in reagents to chemical reactions, one being more dramatic than another etc. ... show more

  • Fun with Science
Style: bubbling volcanic eruptions
This wasn't my first time doing a volcano experiment with my five year old son. However, the Learning Resources Beaker Creatures Bubbling Volcano Reactor was probably the easiest and most fun one we've done. It comes with a pod, so all you have to do is put it in the base and add water. The instructions show a pair of grabber tweezers which aren't included, but really a spoon or fingers or whatever you have would be fine. I couldn't find our tweezers, so we used a scooper for a fine motor challenge. Since I put the volcano on a tray outside, I poured off the water into a cup 2-3 times and let my son repour it into the volcano to keep it going. It bubbles quite a bit and takes several minutes to totally dissolve the pod. My son was excited about extracting and identifying the creature, and of course, he wants to collect more. The creature Twinkle is about the size of a nickel and came in a little see through container that my son needed help opening. The replacement pods are a little pricey, but will be nice to use as rewards, stocking stuffers, Easter basket, etc. I was happy that the base is very easy to clean and can be reused. Three other volcano experiments and a geode experiment which use common household ingredients (baking soda, food coloring, vinegar, dish soap, vegetable oil, salt and corn starch) are provided in the instructions. The Beaker Creature can be used to observe if he settles to the bottom or gets pushed to the surface in the various volcanos. ... show more
