When springtime rolls around and the parks start dressing the ball fields for use, we always watched the jeep or tractor whipping around the infield dragging a length of chain-link fence to level the dirt and break up clods. The clouds of dust drifting away and the fresh earth smooth and level gave the impression of a fresh slate. This tool is a hand driven version of the same principle. In theory, the flat edges and the weight of the tool spread uneven ground and break up humps and clods of dirt to present a smooth planting surface. During assembly, my observations gave me pause. First note, the welded joint between the neck and the swivel has a very minimal bead of weld. This wouldn't be a concern if the inside of the pipe joint was also welded to the flat metal it connects to. This is not the case. In practical use, this is the most critical and stressed joint. I will be watching closely for signs of separation. I'm also suspect of the actual material being stainless steel. If you look closely into the neck of the tube joint, the metal appears to be ordinary steel. Obviously, the metal is painted a stainless steel color, but it is applied paint, not the base metal color. I am also concerned about the minimal spot welds connecting the tines to the frame. Understandably, the tool is not intended as a major earth-mover, but it will be in an abrasive environment and moisture and dirt will take their toll. Assembly of the tool is mildly frustrating if attempted with the included stamped steel "wrenches." One end is 10MM and the other 14MM. There are 2 included, I assume intended to tighten the bolts at the neck and the handle. The problem is that the bolt head for one is indeed 14MM, but the securing lock nut is NOT 14MM. Thus, a crescent wrench (the universal metric solution) is used. BTW, the stamped wrenches are worthless and it's better to just use your own tools. Of note, the handle bolt was a challenge to install because of shoddy drilling. The handle holes were offset enough to require either brute force and threading through the restricted hole or re-drilling the handle to better match the mounting hole. Regardless of the less than perfect fasteners, the tool should provide adequate leveling and will work well in confined spaces. Trying to level a whole backyard of dirt may be an exercise left to the pros with genuine earth moving machines or an undertaking for one with exceptional patience.

This rake is awesome. For this price point, I was surprised to find something this solid. This thing works well, too. If it worked just one summer, it would be worth it. This tool will outlive some of my other ones. Mount it to the front of your car as an extra bumper when not in use. If you need to level some ground, get this, and don't spend the extra on more expensive units.

Anyone that raises chickens know that they dig and scratch and make little holes every where. This works great to clear the area of minor debris and flatten the surface back out to keep from having tripping hazards. It's also very useful if you have had a trench dug in the yard, you can use this to keep it graded smooth while you get grass to take root.

Used to level two fills in sandy soil. Works as expected. Good for small to mid size jobs or areas where you can't get a tractor in. Definitely a very specific tool, but much better and faster than with a rake.
