I use a lot of small percussion in my guitar and ukulele recordings and own many sets of claves. These Aspire claves show nice wood grain, are smoothly but thickly finished and have surprising heft. Held with a cupped hand and with both ends suspended (not touching wrist or fingertips), the volume is painfully loud even with modest hits with the striker. I can't say it's a really beautiful or sweet timbre like my ancient rosewood claves, but it's a reasonably bright tone color. I suspect a thinner finish would open up the upper frequencies a bit. Not my first choice for close mic recording but the volume makes it good for bandstand and drum circles. ... show more
