  • Easy to assemble
This was purchased as a gift to my toddler who is fascinated by space. We put it together as an art project and it is definitely geared toward older children, but working together we managed to creat his very own solar system piece. Highly recommended.

  • Good idea for teaching the planets
This is a great idea for teaching my kids the planets. I like that they can work on the project, but the paint doesn’t really work. It’s a little frustrating. Other than that is a cool idea just needs better execution.

  • Nice illustration of the solar system
If you're considering this for younger learners and approach this activity with your expectations on the scientific accuracy of the representation, I think you'll be fine. The instructions/labeling could be improved and this certainly isn't a to-scale (or even color) representation. We used our own paints and were able to successfully illustrate the concept of planets rotating around the sun (in a particular order based on distance from the sun). ... show more

  • Interesting experience lol
When we first opened up the box, I admit, I was incredibly overwhelmed by the number of pieces. Which others might not find overwhelming but I do. So I didn't re-open it until much, much later. I've discovered a lot. There's actually several problems with this DIY solar system model kit. 1. Paint does not adhere to the plastic planets. Alternatively, you can dip the ball in the paint so that it's just a gloopy ball. But it definitely won't look as nice as the box photo and it won't be spherical like a planet. No judgement, though-we ended up doing that with a few planets. 2. Instructions are confusing and it's partly because - 3. - nothing is properly labeled with letters or numbers (as in planet pieces, planet rods, and what not). Which makes it especially difficult when putting together the planet halves and rods. One of our planets ended up being a hybrid planet - half Venus and half god knows what. LOL. 4. When I ordered this in November it did not come with white or black paint. Which means, if you're going to make Mercury and don't already have white and black paint to make the color grey then you'll probably just have to make Mercury a blue planet (which it recommends in the instructions haha)...this, in my opinion, negates the purpose of a solar system educational kit. LOL. Would I recommend this? Nope. ... show more

  • Very unstructured process, but great end result
The media could not be loaded. My son was really excited to make his own solar system. This kit comes with a plastic base, planets, glue, paint, including glow-in-the-dark paint, and little metal rods to put the planets on to simulate their rotation around the sun. Just a couple of minor issues. 1- The planets come in halves, and they aren't numbered. So matching them up correctly so they would stay tightly together was a challenge. 2- The stems are not all the same size so the larger planets ended up leaning, because they were too heavy for the taller stems. 3- There is not enough blue paint to color the whole plastic base. We had to use three other containers of blue paint to finish the base, and still have enough left for Earth and Neptune. Lastly, the directions are very vague. The whole model was much more of a guessing game than a guided process. ... show more

  • Good intro for kids. Make sure to emphasize size and distance isn't to scale.
This is a good kit to teach kids about the solar system. The kit accurately doesn't include Pluto as a planet, but it's technically a dwarf planet. I realize it's for kids, but it'll be good to know the objects are not to relative scale (for one, the Sun has a diameter 109x to that of Earth's diameter)--remember this when assembling with your kids. If the models accurately portrayed this, the sun would be huge. The planets are are also drastically spread out in real relative orbits. For example, the distance from the Sun to Earth is 1 AU. The Sun to Neptune is about 30 AU (that's 30 times the distance to puts things in perspective). It would be difficult for the model to actually go 30x distance outwards vs 1x for Sun to Earth. Still a good toy to spend time with your kids and teach some astronomy. ... show more
