This game is really nicely constructed, being all wood and metal, including the wood dice. It gets high marks for that. It has a nice vintage look to it. It's meant to be played with money (nickels), which is fine but it means all the players need a bunch of nickels, so would need to be prepared. They should have included poker chips instead, even if playing for money. It makes it easier to keep track of, or to play the game when unprepared. I'm not a big fan of the game play. It's entirely a game of chance, with no decisions to make by the players. Even some simple choices, like picking certain horses to win, or betting on particular horses with different odds and payback would be nice. I'm going to try to think of a simple variation to the game to do something like this and make it more exciting. The horses are not assigned to individual players as you might expect. All horses are used for each game. The cards are divided among all players, with the card numbers corresponding to a horse number, and the dice are used at each turn to determine which horse to move or causes a player to add money to the pot based on the cards they are holding. When a horse "wins", each player holding a card for that horse wins 25% of the pot. Final note: you may notice there are different numbers of steps to get to the finish line among the horses. This is due to the odds of getting that number when rolling a pair of dice so the odds of winning are the same.

This is a real fun game to pull out on game night. My kids and I have fun playing and seeing who will win. This board game is made from really nice quality wood. The pieces have good weight and feel to them. Everything about this board game set screams high end quality. I think this set will last me forever and can be handed down generations as long as the kids keep very good care of it.

My friends had an old version of this game so after playing with them, I wanted to get my own. I'm glad I got this one. It is great great quality. The playing surface doubles as a case when it's folded up. It's super well-built. The clasp seems really sturdy so I think it will hold up for a long time. I was very very surprised with the quality of the horses. I thought they'd be a little cheap feeling, but that's not the case at all. Other pieces that are contained in the case when folded are 2 die and 2 decks of cards. The die are much much larger than a normal set of dice, but they are a nice feel in an adult's hand. The absolute only reason I deducted 1 star is the foam insert. They are supposed to be glued to the bottom of the wood, but mine didn't have good enough adhesive so the foam, with all its contents, keep falling out. I'll try to add more glue, and if that helps, this will easily be a 5-star product.
