A positive review with pictures
After reading critical reviews of this product with detailed photos of poor grind, edge damage, and so on, I ordered this set with trepidation. I'm more than satisfied with what I received. Included: - Ten punches sized 1/4" through 1" - Mandrel - Paper insert (this was shrink-wrapped on the outside) - Two sheets of Interface N-8051 (a standard oil resistant gasket material) - Plastic blow mold case Fit and finish: - All edges are reasonably sharp, most are excellent. - Sizes are dead on. - My 9/16" had some minor scuffs to the edge that I was able to correct with some creative honing. - Markings aren't perfectly consistent, but all are legible, and all are STAMPED rather than laser engraved, which I believe is much more durable against the ravages of time. - The case has a proper hinge that opens to about 130°. Front clasp is bendable plastic, but is distinct from the case material and seems durable. I got these for working on small engines, carburators and such. I was able to cut a beautiful 9/16 OD, 3/8 ID gasket out of KAROPAK for a lawnmower carburator on the first try. Other thoughts: - Hidden on the included paper insert it says: "When attaching punch to mandrel, use a twisting motion." - Once a punch has been used, the punched out disc is generally stuck inside the punch. This is easy enough to extract by removing the punch from the mandrel and pushing the disc out from behind with a nail or other sufficiently long and narrow stick. Nothing included with the set can be used for this purpose, so this is a minor suggestion for improvement. - If my set had the quality control issues others have shared, I would be upset. Quality tools and the expectation of quality tools is important, and I'm glad to share this positive experience. - As of this review, the set is still Made in USA, and stamped as such on the individual pieces. - This set is an excellent value for a quality tool. ... show more

Good value in good punch set - not a crappy heavy taper punch set like most others
This punch set has sturdy cylinders of the appropriate size which they then sharpen. This results in a short and shallow angle that punches well. This is in contrast to cheaper (but some similarly priced sets) that have steep and thick tapers - these cruddier sets don't punch well through thicker material and are a sign of short cuts in manufacturing and sourcing. These cut well and are very durable. I can sharpen them if ever needed. Punches SFD's nicely as well. Also comes with a couple sheets of cork gasket material. I can't comment much further as I haven't used them. ... show more

Worth a fortune when you need them.
I had read the reviews for this and other hole punch sets, and decided on this set even though people said they were not sharp. After years of working as a mechanic and reading reviews one thing I have learned is to take what others say with a grain of salt. Currently I am working on a boat project that requires me to make some gaskets out of plastic, like milk jug plastic. I cut out the shapes I needed and marked them for holes. I got out the size punch I needed, and used a piece of 2x6 treated pine as a backer. Two good hits with a ball peen hammer and I had the hole I needed. Finished up all the holes just like that. You can see examples in the picture, washers are next to the cleat. No problems with this tool. On another note, I went to 3 stores looking for this as I wanted it right away. I was looked at like I had 3 heads when I asked for this, not a single store sales person knew what I was looking for! ... show more

Don't expect perfection, use them as intended
I had a set of these under the General label and they went missing...can still buy those and they are the exact same product as this for a few bucks more. The quality of the set I received is not as good as what I bought some years back but it's ok. Only four or five of the cutters were what you would consider properly and evenly ground. The sharpness varies a lot between cutters and a couple were somewhat poor, but they are easy to touch up if you're semi-skilled at sharpening tools. The 3/4" in this set had a big ding in its edge - that will take some work to sharpen it out but for how I'll use these it doesn't even really need to be corrected. From the feel the steel seems to be as good as the old set, time will tell. If you want these for leather or soft metals you may or may not be satisfied, for cloth and textiles you probably won't be unless you put in some sharpening time. For cork, rubber, and other synthetic materials they do great as long as the material doesn't get over 1/4" or so - exactly what they are made to do. Good quality case with these, glad they haven't cheaped out on that - and glad that they are still US made. ... show more

Forged by the gods with lightning and large awkward hammers!
No they're not. This quality punch set was made in Wisconsin by Americans. Go team! I needed a punch set with an array of sizes from 3/8" to 1" to cut some felt and vinyl circles for a project. I had to make a couple hundred and I had to be quick about it. Even though I've been taught this lesson before, I initially cheaped out and bought a Neiko set on Amazon for about half the price of the A&E set. The box the Neikos arrived in was still warm when I put the set back in that box and sent it on its way back to Amazon. They were just not serviceable. I did a little research on A&E and once I realized they were American made and not typical Chinese junk, I bought a set. They arrived rust free and very very sharp. I cut a finger withing 2 minutes of fiddling around with the A&E cutters. That was impressive. They worked even better on the vinyl sheets I am using than they did on my finger. For best results It's best to use a hardwood or maybe a plastic (like the ones food cutting boards are made of) to cut on. I am very satisfied with this set, especially for the quality vs price. It's a winner. ... show more

Works Great, made in USA
This arrived next day and is exactly what I wanted. Heavy duty, quality product. Sharp and ready to use. Cuts clean holes in vegitan leather with ease. This is a great product at a reasonable price. I definitely recommend this product and Lang Tools.

A nice set at a reasonable price
As some reviewers noted, they are not really sharp, but they are very easy to sharpen to suit the material being punched. They probably are sharp enough for some uses as they are. I have used 4 of the punches so far and the steel seems to be first rate; hard enough that the edge doesn't roll over but not so hard that they chip. I always punch into the end grain of wood for a backup of whatever I am punching which tends to keep the edge and produce a clean cut. ... show more
