  • Big improvement over 1st Gen Kwikset Z-Wave Locks
This was to replace a Kwikset 910 I had for several years that was just not reliable enough. The 910 is very first generation with Z-Wave (S0 security) and it would work perfectly 9 out of 10 times, but I grew impatient with the 10% problem - it would not report that it was locked when it was locked. If I re-interviewed the device, it would then correct itself. This happened enough to become an irritant, although I had those 910 locks a solid decade so I guess that isn't too bad for this type of technology. I stayed with Kwikset in that I could re-key the new lock to match the keys for the old locks. This is Z-Wave Plus with the S2 security, and appears much more reliable and quicker to report in than the 910. Z-Wave is great technology in that you have no cloud connection and are independent from any specific company and their app. [diatribe again home tech cloud companies removed, dear reader] I've dumped everything cloud based and moved to Z-Wave where possible - 38 devices in the house right now. For this lock our most common scenario is that when we return home and correctly enter the combo, both the door unlocks and the alarm is disarmed along with other stuff - entry lights, heating/AC, etc - no running to the alarm panel to enter (the identical code for most people) a code. I can also trigger notifications for incorrect codes entered or when a key (we never use keys) is used so that I know if someone has picked the lock. I send out all lock operations using Pushover to our phones. I also put a NFC tag on the door that I can hold my phone up to for the lock to open. I have not tried using phone presence as a means to unlock, but could. Battery life is good - lithium batteries are a boon and a bust, in that they can last a year in this lock but the lock will never report low battery because lithium batteries hold voltage until almost dead. But you can tell when the batteries are near the end as they strain to open the lock. I just change the batteries when I hear the strain. They last long enough to not annoy me. The door is probably locked/unlocked 4-6 times on the average day, YMMV. I use Z-Wave JS with this and Home Assistant with the Keymaster integration. Keymaster give you more flexibility than you need with guest or worker codes that are scheduled at days/times. We just use a single guest/worker code that we disable most of the time. As far as voice control we can do that if we want via Google Home, but generally don't. So yes, we can say "Hey Google, is the Front Door Locked" and it will answer if we are not near our phones. Overall I'm happy, but disappointed in having to replace our 910 era locks. At least these are cheaper. ... show more

  • Solution for SmarThings calling it a Smartswitch
I'll try to keep this short. Love these Kwikset smart locks! We have several of Kiwikset's in the home. When one of our 917s died (the motor finally gave up) we bought this 620 as a replacement. We are a tech family, so we love that we can monitor, control and command (Alexa) remotely. To connect this to our home automation, we use the Smarthings app and the Aeotec SmartThings Smart Home Hub to connect our Z-Wave and Zigbee devices (which is tied in to the network & internet via network switch via an ethernet cable v. connected via WiFi). When I went to set this new smart lock up through the Smarthings app, it connected perfectly, but was identified as a SMART SWITCH, not a SMARTLOCK. After several troubleshooting attempts, I called Kiwikset who threw up there hands. I next called Samsung technical support and selected support for computing devices (laptops, tablets, SmartThings, etc.). It was about 20 seconds into the conversation where they said "we know what the problem is". They say these newer Z-Wave locks have slightly lower wireless outputs to increase battery life, so if they're too far away from the hub this is the exact problem that happens when you try to REGISTER them, NOT operating them, once registered. So basically here are the steps that Samsung Technical Support walk me through to get this thing registered and running as a SmartLock like all the other locks in my house: 1. Make sure the SmarThings hub is on the house Wi-Fi since I'll have to move the hub within feet of the Smart Lock to get this solved. You do this by disconnecting the ethernet cable, going into the SmarThings app under setting for your hub in the app, establish a connection to your home Wi-Fi, and when it comes back online you can now move it closer to your lock. Note: If your hub is only connected via Wi-Fi and not an Ethernet cable, you can skip step 1. 2. Move and setup the Smarthings hub within 5 ft of the lock. 3. Go back into the Smarthings app and under hub settings, then you go to Exclude Devices. 4. In the Exclude Device settings you select "exclude a device" and it starts searching for devices. 5. You now press the A button on the Smart Lock to make it discoverable. The app now see it, and asks you is this the device you want to exclude? And you say YES. 6. Now we go back to the SmartThings home screen and click the plus (+) symbol to Add a Device. 7. Follow the screen prompts for what type of device you want to add, and then once you get to Kwikset, You select Z-Wave as the type of device, then the app starts to searching for the lock. 8. Now that the app is searching for the device, you press the A button on the lock again (block LED goes RED) and the app now rediscovers it. Once it's found and the lock is registered go to step 9. 9. Now back to your home screen and it's discovered as a Smart Lock instead of a Smart Switch! 10. Put everything back together and move your hub back to its previous location and you're all set! That sounds way more complicated than it actually is, but Samsung says this is the process you have to go through with Z-Wave devices now that they have slightly lower output. If the lock is within 10 ft of the hub or The hub isn't on the other side of a wall to the lock, you won't have this problem. Ours is not working great and we're very happy with it Good luck! ... show more
