I'll preface this by saying, yes, I'm aware the kit only cost $60. I don't expect the fit and finish level from a $200 kit for $60. That said, there are a couple glaring issues here that honestly would have been deal breakers for me if I had known going in. To wit; the body. Pretty much all my major issues with this kit stem from the body. First of all, you know how the description and pictures for this listing state "mahogany body" multiple times? It's not. It's basswood. No piece of mahogany has ever been this light in weight or in color. Calling this a mahogany body is simply a blatant lie, and is actual false advertising. So, right off the bat, this body may well have been the ugliest piece of wood I've ever seen. First, there's the fact that it's obviously a completely different wood than was advertised; next, the body had not been finish sanded at all. This blank literally was glued, rough planed, run through a CNC machine and boxed up to ship. The surface was literally as rough as a tree that had just been cut. Is that a huge deal? Not really, but it's indicative of the lack of care put into this product. So, back to the wood; this body was 4 glued pieces with wildly mismatched grain, so transparent stain was out of the question - and believe me, I tried. In the third image above, notice a dark patch along the curve of the bass side body bout - far as I can tell, the wood there was impregnated with some sort of resin or something. There's almost no visible grain in that patch, and finish material simply did not want to adhere to that spot specifically. Also, just to add insult to injury, the blank appeared to have been run through CNC at a slant, because looking at the face of the body, the glue lines slanted left about 5 degrees. Just an absolutely hideous piece of wood. I had bought this with the intention of doing a ceruse finish, but so much for that nonsense. The neck is actually good. That's the one bright spot from this kit. The fretwork is spot on, the neck had a bit of back bow which was easily corrected, and the fretboard was fairly dry, again easily corrected. Lot of people don't care for the chunky profile typical of Glarry/Ktaxon basses, but I have pretty big hands and long fingers, so I don't mind in the least. I wouldn't mind a thinner profile from from to back for the simple matter of weight reduction - again typical of Glarry/Ktaxon basses, this instrument has pretty pronounced neck dive when assembled, and this honestly is my biggest problem with Glarry/Ktaxon basses in general - the balance would be much improved by shaving a bit off the back of the neck. The hardware is a mixed bag. The tuners, surprisingly, are not terrible. The bridge, not surprisingly, is. The electronics are unimpressive - they're passable, but that's all that can be said. The J pickup is quite noisy, which is kind of expected, but I feel like it's a bit noisier than I was expecting. One minor complaint here is that you're given the option to use either foam or springs beneath the pickups, but the hardware packet was 2 springs short, so that option was off the table for me. Jack seems loose, overall electronics are pretty much just there. It's kind of expected that the electronics will need to be upgraded anyway, but it's disappointing that what's included here is so very mid. Do I recommend this kit? Not wholeheartedly, but my needs and intentions for this kit were fairly specific, and the kit as presented did not meet those needs, despite messaging in this listing indicating that it would. So, buyer beware - yeah, it's only $60, but I would have spent more on another kit if I'd known about all these issues going in.
