  • One Giant Step in Treestands
Size: Medium
This is my first year using this tree stand. I got the medium size as we have 8 foot ceilings and never get a huge tree. I'm really happy with the results so far this year, but there is definitely still some room for improvements. -The initial set up of the tree was everything I hoped for and more. It was so fast and easy. I had the tree off the top of the car, in the tree stand, and fully set up and secured before my wife even had the three kids out of the car and into the house. It was so fast and so easy and worth the upgrade alone. They kind of lead you to believe this will be the tree stand to end all tree stands though. But it definitely still left a little to be desired for me. Again, I do think it's worth it for the ease of set up alone, so these are more minor items. I think I if went into spending ~$100 on a tree stand expecting these items, I would have been even more satisfied than I am right now, so I wanted to point them out to get expectations in the right place for other hopefully. -The water gauge is really nice to have. It's a little reminder to water the tree. However it sticks at the highest level (basically where it was when you watered it). I just send my daughter under there to tap it to get it to give an accurate reading. She hasn't complained about doing it yet. This is better than having to stick your finger inside the tree stand like I used to have to do still, but it doesn't seem to make sense to me why Krinner couldn't have figured out how to get this working. -I was under the impression that the water capacity would be a game changer. I think it is 2.5 gallons for this size stand. That must be before the volume of the trunk is subtracted because I definitely didn't add that much on first watering. I still have to water it every day. I use a small pitcher, probably about 1 quart and it takes usually 2 of those per day and the gauge goes from close to empty to close to full after watering it. This is still an improvement over the old stand but not by much. -Storage with the crank is kind of tough. The crank sticks up above the top of the stand, so it's difficult to get it back in the box. You can get the crank to be down flat but I haven't figured out how to yet. I like things to be stacked nice a flat and away in their boxes in the Christmas closet. This is still am improvement over the old stand but I don't see why it's so tough to get the crank to go flat. -Watering is my biggest complaint. There isn't much room to pour the water in. With my old, basic tree stand, I could use any vessel lying around -- usually a pint glass was my item of choice. There is very little room between the tree trunk and the rim of the tree stand cavity and also the tree supports and steel cable get in the way. I found a pitcher that has a long spout that seems to work well but I still have a really hard time watering it. I spill something pretty much every time. This is actually a downgrade from my old tree stand. All in all, this is a very welcomed upgrade. If I had to do it over again, I might get the large or the XL to get improved water capacity then have to water it less. If you're looking to splurge on a tree stand you should go for it! Just be sure to keep your expectations within reason on the other items other than set up. ... show more

  • This is the Mercedes-Benz of Christmas Tree Stands - it will ruin you for most others.
Size: XX-Large
I am thrilled I bought this stand - there is no going back to those eight pegs I had to twist & twist to hold the tree up. Now for my favorite Christmas Tree story: The trip to get the Christmas tree started at my father's service station, with Mighty Murph, his right-hand man. He didn't need a tree, but wanted to come along on the adventure. We pilled into the old Chevy Impala Station Wagon they used at the garage. It was a real land yacht, coming in at over 18 feet long. We headed out to the tree farm by the Big Oak Golf Course. It was a cold day and there was some snow on the ground. We mogged around for a while, seeing the freshly cut stumps as evidence of those who came before us. None of the trees seemed worthy, but as we got toward one of the roads that signified the end of the lot, we saw a beauty. This, was a tree! It was graceful, yet solid and well-shaped. Dad and Murph got the antique hand saw going and made short work of it. It was a long drag back to checkout, but we'd gotten the pick of the litter, so it was worth it. I think we trussed the tree to the roof, like hunters returning from the kill. That Chevy wagon was so long, we may have gotten away with just stuffing most of it in the back, with the rest hanging out through the rear window. The men were a little thirsty after all this work, so we stopped at Pinky's Bar & Grill on Castle Street for some refreshments. They drank draft beer while I had Pepsi. I couldn't keep up with them. By the time we dropped Murph off it was dark. When we got home, we started to bring our beauty into the house when my mother, ever the voice of reason, stopped us by saying, "What are you doing?" My father replied, "What do you mean?" "Charlie, that tree is 12 feet tall. There's no way it will fit. Take three feet off the bottom and six inches off the top, and then give it a try." It dawned on me then that most people probably take a measuring tape with them to a Christmas tree farm. Dad didn't worry about that kind of thing. He paced it off, and indeed, it was a tall tree, especially given that our house had eight-foot ceilings. Mom's first guess was close. The tree was probably 12 and a half feet long. There was a reason why others had been able to pass by such an impressive arboreal specimen. I helped run the dull hand saw for the third and final trunk cut. It was a thick trunk. Fortunately, we had a large living room, as the tree's girth was also impressive. You could have hidden a pony behind that tree. My mother grumbled and began decorating it after dinner. Looking back on it, I can only laugh and shake my head. The whole episode was emblematic of my father, may he rest in peace. ... show more
