  • I see why people love this thing so much now

The media could not be loaded. This is the last island of sanity on your way to a Trigon or OB6 or one of the Prophets. There's even one more stage where you buy a second one and polychain them. After that though "I might as well just get that OB-6". Before you do, I HIGHLY suggest spending the 19 dollars for SVF 4-pole state variable filter from Sinevibes, and installing their HP, LP, and BP 4 pole filter. You can hear the difference right away on the first factory preset. Korg might want to just make the Sinevibes stuff default. It's night and day on something that already sounds amazing. They could do it. I wasn't even going to buy this synth but I had an amazing experience with my first pieces of quality gear (things that have never been on bad gear review) and wanted that experience again. Things like the DB-1 from Erica Synths or the Typhon from Dreadbox. This is the least expensive polysynth where you get that full experience. A manual that makes sense. Better than just good construction. High quality knobs and displays. Heft. This isn't something you could fill with helium and tie a string to it like the 200 dollar behringer synths. It's chunky and substantial. Better, they've opened up their hardware so geniuses like Sinevibes (or you!) can make your own modulations, reverbs, and occilators. That's a pretty amazing extra. Drag and drop with their LIbrary app. I can't think of a single thing that I dislike, or could complain about. They even make expanding it easy if you want 4 more voices. I don't. I will make the jump to wizard level synth before I buy a second one for chaining. My workspace is limited. That said, I might never make that leap into 2000 dollar synths because of this one. Most of my workflow is sending 3 or 4 part midi chords to a poly synth with a tracker. So for me, this synth may in fact be perfect. We'll see. I'm already making music. I'm just blown away by the first 50 presets all being usable. This might be my best musical instrument experience to date, beating out my beloved MIJ mustang jr for sheer quality and attention to detail. This is another one of those, get off the fence type things. yes, buy this. I'd even say buy it over the Pro-800 if you have the extra hundred, even though you lose 4 voices. I would say the user experience and quality and ease of making your own patches is so polished, even if you can afford the Deepmind, get this instead. Unless you really need a lot of voices. ... show more

  • A few quibbles but a very nice instrument overall

Fun synth! Analog sound wrapped in a digital package. When you turn it on, it tells you it's tuning itself, and it's fine until it's warmed up and then it goes out of tune a little, so I make a habit of power-cycling it a couple of minutes after I power up so it can retune itself. On one hand, it's a little annoying, but on the other hand, it's analog, and I think this is just the nature of the analog beast. I wish the sequencer was easier to program, but it might just be my limited attention span to blame for that. I also wish it had a full-size keyboard, but that would bump the form factor up quite a bit if the number of keys were stay the same, and you could presumably hook it up to a full-size keyboard if you really wanted to. (I may end up doing that.) And why is there no mod controller??? I know, there are knobs to do that stuff with, maybe that's a valid reason for not having one. I do like the filter knob, it's the one big knob, which is appropriate, as it may in effect BE the mod wheel. Also, I wish this had an actual pitch bend wheel instead of the little lever, which is a little sticky once in a while until it gets worked in - pitch bend controllers have to center themselves 100%, all the time, or else they're really annoying. Seems better now that it's been used a bit. I'll call it five stars, just because it's a nice package, real wood on the back, and lots of aluminum - feels like it will hold up to a lot of use. ... show more

  • Great for beginners and fun for veterans

The saying goes "Jack of trades, master of none". I would say this is a pretty accurate description for the Minilogue. This is the swiss army knife of synths, which is great, depending on your needs. There's almost nothing this thing cant produce, but it isn't going to sound as rich as other synths, it's not modular and the menu isn't my favorite. All that being said, with the price tag as low as it is, it's really hard not to love this thing. I spent about a month with 4 different synths and this one ended up being the winner because it will do what all the other synths did, maybe not quite as well, but well enough that it made it the logical choice for someone who is just getting into synths. It is also something that I can grow into and will probably always have around even if I go down the rabbit hole. Overall, if you're new to the synth game, this is the one for you. If you're well versed, this is a fun machine that can do just about everything well enough at a price tag anyone can afford with a little budgeting. It's definitely worth having around. ... show more

  • It's great as a pure analog synth and the multi engine is incredible.

If you're playing this thing from a MIDI keyboard that supports velocity and aftertouch you can get some very interactive sounds. It's really for noodling, setting up a patch and playing it is one thing but it really likes to be manipulated as you play, noodling along as the sounds evolve. Of course you can use it to create some fat drums too, it's quite nice in that respect. It begs to be used with a sequencer and workflow where you can record all your keyboard dynamics in real time though. Step programming this thing is OK but you lose all the interactivity. Neat piece of gear and while the knobs can fall off, they're replaceable and their design minimizes the chance for damage to the actual pots which is a design decision that's OK. ... show more
