We took this on a cross country trip with my 2 grandkids. It was interesting to use. Very quiet. We did leave it plugged into the car overnight twice (we stayed in a Tipi on the river - Cody Trout Ranch!!) So, no power in the Tipi. It did fine, everything stayed cold. It isn't refrigerator cold but it is "safe" for food cold as long as you don't let the car get too hot. It only cools about 30 degrees cooler than your environment. ... show more

I really researched which cooler to buy. I read the reviews, thanks to everyone who posted and didn't want to spend a fortune, but was willing to spend a bit to get a good working product. Went with the Koolatron for many reasons and have to say after 11 days on the road running nearly non stop that I made the right choice 100%! We ran this thing non stop nearly both in hotel rooms and in the car. After 7 days, a bag of ice I had added at home was still frozen solid and it was colder inside cooler than hotel fridge. No joke! I was afraid to put the food in the fridge so just keep them in the cooler and put the drinks in the fridge. Add a couple ice packs or a bag of ice as it help keep the temp even lower and since our Honda Odyssey Touring plug in the back turns off when engine is off, the ice helps keep the temp down during gas fill ups and bathroom runs without sacrificing coolness. I noticed no ice or frost build up after 7 days, but chose to turn in off for a short time & dry it out just to be safe. What I did notice was after that when car was turned off somehow we had a bit of water in the bottom and did not dry it out, then the frost built up. I think because the food was out for a couple minutes, persipration developed on the food. I believe if there is perspiration or additional moisture inside, then likely to get frost. Still ran with frost, but I decided to dry it out and defrost to be on the safe side. I also wiped down food before putting back inside. THis time no frost build up. Bought the adapter plug for using in the hotels and did as other reviewers said. I cooled it down the day before at home without anything inside so it was cold when we started and added only cold food & drink to it. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. No moisture produced. Adapter gets hot for sure. Almost scary, but no problems with it. This was NOT our main cooler, but for our foods like meats, cheeses, milk etc. that needed to stay cold all the time. Stayed as cold as my fridge at home if not colder keeping ice frozen even in outdoor temps up to 100 degrees while engine was running! We had a standard cooler with ice for drinks that was used allowing the Coolatron to protect vital foods. Highly recommend this cooler and adapter, but Amazon needs to fix the packaging as we did have minor damage and could have easily been destroying or severely damaged in shipping. Do not order last minute. We did and had one wheel with minor damage and the plastic restrainer for the lid was broken. No time to exchange, but works fine without. ... show more

Wanted a refrigerator for my car. This would not work in 100 degree heat. Running all day only cooled to 70 degrees minimum. I would have to leave my car running with air conditioning with no thermostat control to regulate temperature

Used during a 3 months roadtrip through the western usa in our car. Very good stuff, light weight, good size. Electrical works well. Just be careful not to put it on hot when you want to use it as a fridge 😀. Not too fragile. I recommend. I read the other reviews, so I had a few tips that made using it a breeze. We are a family of five and we had more than enough room. I have used it on 2 different trips, these are the tips that made it work wonderfully: -Place paper towels on the bottom to help with condensation, so it doesn't freeze up. (If it does turn it off for a bit and turn it back on, change paper towels on the bottom.) -Turn it on the night before, to cool it down or warm it up. -When using it cold, make sure that the items you put in it are cold from the start. Any uncooked meats should be frozen. They will not remain frozen, it was a precaution and the bacon stayed at a safe temp the entire week of our trip. --Take some nail polish and highlight the side of the plug with the arrow. Since the cooler can be a warmer as well it will save you the heartache of finding the wrong temp in your cooler. -Buy the battery saver, better to be safe than sorry and since we traveled for a week it was a great peace of mind. -Buy the AC adapter, you will have an automatic mini fridge in your hotel if you place it beside the AC vent. It also makes it easer to cool it down the night before. -I did read that some did not like the length of the handle. I gave the kids the responsibility of pulling it around, the height and length was just right for them. You could always add a belt or rope, but I did not find it a problem.     • SAVE YOUR MONEY AND DO NOT PURCHASE: Expect damage from shipping and cooling is poor

I bought this item because I drive from California to Texas at least three times a year and having this will save on the cost of ice and cleanup. I had already purchased the smallest version to hold cold drinks on the passenger seat and it was great. Was excited to get this larger version so I could save on the cost of stopping to by crappy drive thru food. As soon as I received the box I knew there may be a problem because I could immediately tell just from lifting the box there was no protective packing material and as you can see I was right. Just the chest in a cardboard box. As you can see from the photos the wheel protector was broken off. I’m going to try mending with gorilla glue but they are held in by simply hard plastic hallow pins so breakage is super easy. Manufacturer may want to rethink packaging before shipping. I would have given it more stars, but when I have to mend something before even using it the first time I tend to be doubtful. Update: 02 August 2019 So in the end this was a regretful spend of that much money. The unit itself does not cool well and I figured out it was because the lid does not seal properly unless I put something heavy on it.
