Purchased this as we had decided to do away with our toaster oven that we had for years. We wanted to have a good looking toaster that was red with a bagel function and this hit the mark. As a note, there is no such thing as a perfect toaster unless they start building them to scan the toast and measure darkness of the toast based on a touch screen setting. But that toaster will then cost you $200+ and what do you need that for? Looks: We love this toaster for the red mixed with the stainless steel. It has a bit of a retro look to it yet still does not feel out of place. People say the red is a fire engine red but in my opinion, it is a bit deeper of a red and not as bright as a fire engine red. I placed it next to my Le Creuset which is a darker red on the bottom for comparison so you can have an idea of the red color. Functionality: The toaster does exactly what a toaster should do: toast. I see people complaining that it burns their toast or that it doesn't toast even but I have yet to find a toaster that does toast perfectly. And that is because it will vary based on the bread that you place in the toaster, the amount of moisture in the bread, the temperature of the bread and if you just used the toaster to toast something else. For my standard loaf bread slice, a 1 works perfectly, giving me a good toasting. I will say, it does toast better with two slices as opposed to one as it will get a little on the darker side with just one slice as opposed to two. It toasts bagels really well and their is a bagel button so you can toast just the inside of the bagel. For a room temperature bagel a two, maybe 3 works well but a cold bagel a 3 to 4 is better. The same for an english muffin as a bagel. A piece of sourdough bread is a 2 maybe a 3. Regardless of your setting, you should always monitor what you are toasting and if it is getting dark, then hit the cancel button to pop it up. As for the extra lift, it works fine except with the smallest pieces of bread like when the english muffin top comes out really small as compared to the bottom. But this is the exception. Great even toasting on breads so far. Good controls. I like the beep on the toast being done. Have bread that we typically buy that is too long for the slot. Our old toaster had two very long slots that allowed it to be toasted. Have to cut the bread in order to toast this bread now which is a bit annoying. ... show more

I had to have this toaster! It’s the full package! The larger slots for bagels and having its own heating setting specifically for bagels is a great feature. The toasting settings is great, you get the perfect toast every time! It’s super easy to use! Perfect for families as it has four slots for toasting more breads at once. This feels like a quality toaster. I like that it has an audible buzzer just before the toast pops up.The timer has five stops but you can set it between stops if you like. The slots are nice and wide and the "bagel" setting does what it's supposed to do, which is to toast one side much darker than the other. It could toast more evenly, though--the bottom third of the bread isn't as toasted as the top. ... show more

Had one of these for almost 10 years before one side had a sensor failure, so after limping along with one set of slots for a while we decided to try a Cuisinart. Bad idea! Bagel function was useless, so we sent that back and got another KitchenAid.     • IS THERE NO GOOD TOASTER ON THE MARKET??

I was happy with my little Cuisinart Toaster, which eventually failed. I replaced it with the updated model of the same Cuisinart Toaster, and it was junk out of the box. I searched high and low for the "best" toaster and came up with this KitchenAid. It is hardly better. I am on the hunt again. When I was a kid, the toaster had these little wires inside which glowed brightly, putting off the heat that toasted the toast. This KitchenAid the wires don't glow. It takes a while to make toast. But the worst part is one side is cooked hard, the other side not so much. And that's NOT on the bagel setting. Actually for bagels, this toaster is pretty good. If you examine all the standard toasters on the market, you will see that they all appear to come from the same factory in China. Same cheap stamped parts, same heating elements, etc. Many toaster buyers are now just buying the $11 toaster at Walmart and suffering with it, rather than a $60 or even $160 toaster with which one will, equally, suffer. It appears I will have to buy a commercial toaster (>$300) to have as good a toaster as my mom had for my entire life growing up in her home. I bet she STILL has that toaster.
