I've got some health issues, so don't have the stamina for wailing a way with a full size axe like I could when I was younger. However, I can sit on nice stool with a little 5lb sledge and pre-split wood (or at least smaller limbs) and just plonk off tinder VERY quickly. I could easily see larger blocks with a larger sledge and and bolting it down that this would be great for just churning through some wood. ... show more

Have a bunch of Hickory that needed to be split. With an 8lb sledge and this splitter it was quick work.

    • Sturdy product with some minor issues
This splitter is sturdy enough and provides some value for safely splitting wood. There are several issues worth mentioning that keep this from earning my 5-star rating. First, I have issues with suppliers that do not take the effort to proofread and sanity-check the instructions for the product. For example. the printed instructions for this splitter include this step: "In case of messing up the hardware to the correct position,please do not scatter all the hardware during the assembling process." Seriously, could you not take a few minutes to have someone proof the instructions so they make sense? Second, there are 2 large screws in the kit with no instructions as to what they are for. Finally, I find it insulting that these product listings have photos that are so clearly photoshopped to show the product in a fictional setting. Please, take a few minutes to take "real" photos of the product in its intended use so I can see what it really looks like. Finally, and more importantly, this splitter works well for wood that is round and fits into the upper chamber for splitting. However, once the pieces of wood are smaller like you would want for "kindling", they are not stable in the splitter and fall off to the side while you are trying to hit them with a hammer. The product is functional and I can get productive use from it but it could have been better. ... show more

My husband loves to have a fire in the backyard in the winter. He liked the feeling of being warmed by the fire. He used to split wood manually. Very time consuming and laborious.
