I ordered this product for my husband for Christmas. He attached it to an old log and uses it in our backyard for splitting kindling for our fire pit. He loves the convenience of the splitter over having to hold a piece of log or risk it falling over while he got ready to chop it. It's been very handy and effective.

I bought this product because I am always petrified that my hatchet will slip while I'm chopping kindling. I've used this 3 weekends in a row at my camper and it is slick! All my friends (even the macho guy ones) want to get one now! I have no problem using it and it's quite sturdy sitting on the ground. It will only accommodate logs less than 14.5 inches (but that's standard firewood length so it works for me!) I used the back side of my hatchet to hammer with but I am definitely buying a sledge hammer for next season.

Works fine on smaller logs. Not so great on anything over 3-4 inches in diameter. It will work but it’s a good workout. You get what you pay for.

I've got some health issues, so don't have the stamina for wailing a way with a full size axe like I could when I was younger. However, I can sit on nice stool with a little 5lb sledge and pre-split wood (or at least smaller limbs) and just plonk off tinder VERY quickly. I could easily see larger blocks with a larger sledge and and bolting it down that this would be great for just churning through some wood.

It does split wood just fine, but I only had a 20 oz hammer for the wood pictured above and it took a bit to get it started. I now have a 4 lb sledge that pushes through the wood much quicker; overall, the splitter works just fine to get some kindling wood, as long as you have a hammer with a little weight. Much safer than using my little ax to split the wood.
