  • Too bad!
First time use and the ceramic insulators disintegrated at less than 1000 degrees Fahrenheit. Replacement are cheap enough but shipping is more than the price of the part and no guarantee this won't happen again.

  • Reliable
Second one I've bought. They are reliable. Yes, the instructions could be in better English, and where the insulation butts against the ceramic connector/probes, could be of better heat resistant material, I paid for it to sense temperature in my electric kiln and raku gas kiln. I now have two readings for the upper part of the kiln and lower. Not to mention, I also had a faulty reading on my original one I bought last year. I did all I could to make contact with connectors and it would still read hi. Thus, my second one. But, the second firing produced the fault on the new unit. I found the problem on BOTH UNITS turned out to be the screws came loose. I had checked all but one screw. Look folks, cheap, sorta, but it works. Heat does something to nuts and bolts. It's called "expansion and contraction"! That causes things to loosen, even the "U shaped thingy", that is called a wire connector. Heat will open up the ends on those crimp joints. Oh yes, by the way, I emailed the business and the person was quick to get back with an answer that I had already diagnosed. But good quick service. ... show more

  • Almost perfect pyrometer
The pyrometer, as a whole, is great! The extra probe will be nice for some things, but the prime reason for the purchase was for use in determining the temperature inside a ceramic kiln. It seems to be pretty accurate, according to the witness cones, but the first and second times of use had pieces of the VERY THIN insulators on the probe breaking and falling off INSIDE the kiln. FORTUNATELY, none of the pieces fell onto a glazed piece of pottery, or it would have been stuck there forever. The manufacturer desperately needs to require that the insulator pieces be MUCH thicker that go on the probe. (The issue is the severe temperature variance the insulators are subjected to in going from room temperature to 2,000 degrees and back in a such a short period of time. This is not possible without damage due to the VERY thin nature of the insulators.) ... show more

  • Seems accurate, but not very durable
Seems accurate for measuring high temperatures at a cheap price. We use this for pottery kiln to measure 1,700°F to 2,200°F temps, it works for those. Comes with 2 thermocouple, one is for very high heat, (2,200°F) the other is for less than 600°F, not sure. We've tested it against 2 other very high temperature meters, seems accurate to about +/- 3 °F. Thermocouple is very delicate and wires are easy to damage. ... show more

  • Worked very well for two years of intensive use
I just wanted to balance some of the reviews here that mentioned this pyrometer not lasting long. I have no reason to doubt those people's experiences, but I wanted to share my own: I used this unit for two years, in a really intensive setting (regular forge welding around its maximum temperature range), and it has been a very valuable and reliable tool that was, without the shadow of a doubt, worth the 50 dollars. ... show more

  • Thermocouple broke on first use in multiple places
The digital reading on the pyrometer seemed to be very accurate, unfortunately I can no longer use it for my needs because the thermocouple attachment broke during first use. First two of the ceramic lengths of sheath covering the thermocouple shattered, sending small shards falling on the pottery inside my kiln. Then the wire connecting the thermocouple to the pyrometer stopped transmitting the temperature. At first I was getting great readings from inside my kiln, then they came sporadically, then the pyrometer readings just showed room temperature. Jiggled the wire, unplugged and plugged it from the pyrometer, but no luck. The wire was totally severed somewhere inside it's sheath. ... show more

  • Computer is great, thermocouple not so much
Wire to thermocouple burned off during second first use - tried to strip back to reattach and the wires are not thick enough to handle the heat the unit is meant to measure.

  • Easy
I put the product together and stuck it in the kiln. Worked perfect
