Some reveiwers seem to think that since the numbers can be entered in any order this product is worthless. They also make a big deal about only being able to use each number once. Other reviews suggest "upgrading" the mounting hardware. The instructions list how many possible combinations there are based on how many numbers you use. I believe 5 numbers yields the most combinations which is over 200. First of all a thief would have to first guess how MANY numbers you used. How on earth are they going to know that? Then they would have to try every combination of that length of numbers. Keep in mind that EVERY time you enter a series of numbers you have to try the open button. As soon as you do that the lock resets and you have to start again. Every attempt a thief makes using more or less numbers than you chose is simply additional wasted time and exposure. If you really think a thief is going to sit there and keep trying while also trying to remember which combo of 200 possible number sets they've tried without using a large note pad or an excel spreadsheet you do not understand the criminal mind. Thieves fear exposure and observation and move on to easier targets. The smart ones won't even bother, they'll just kick in the most out of sight door or throw a brick through a window. The dumb ones will do the same after wasting time in a futile attempt to open this box. The end result is the same. If a thief wants to get into your house, they will get in without wasting time trying to get your precious key. Next: Mounting hardware. The screws that come with this box are perfectly adequate in length, size and strength. Using the screws provided will yield a box that requires a sledge hammer, crowbar or reciprocating saw to remove. All of those methods make a hell of a lot of noise and we all know thieves like to draw a lot of attention to themselves right? Ah, no. But then, guess what? Even if they do get the box off they still have to open the damm thing! I can tell you that is going to require AT LEAST a hack saw and a nice bench vise. That said, I could open this box in about 7 seconds with a cordless angle grinder. When is the last time you saw suspicious characters walking around with angle grinders? I will say this. You must drill pilot holes in wood for the provided screws or you'll wind up stripping the heads when your driver bit "cams-out". Or, yes, you could use Torx screws to eliminate cam-out. The fact remains, the strength of the fasteners is a non-issue. If you still want this box but you're concerned about any of these issues just mount the box out of sight, and preferably somewhere where tools can't get any leverage or purchase on it. Thats' what I did. It's not readily visible and only my family members know where it is. Otherwise this box is not for you. Buy one of those "hide-a key" rocks and put it in the garden. The reason I didn't go that route is we have a yard service and it would be highly probable that someone would eventually flip that fake rock over. Also, we have guests we let come over when we're not in town. Try telling them which rock to look under?Nope. Just get this box, mount it out of sight and only disseminate the number to trusted parties. So, this box is perfectly adequate for me. Built like a tank, easy to use. The only time I would worry about this box if if I found it missing completely because that would mean the thief knocked it off, took it and now has time and access to tools to cut it open. Some people hide a house key under a door mat, under a rock, under a flower pot or in their garage somewhere. Of course none of these methods are completely safe. When you have family, friends or coworkers that occasionally need keys for your home or business, you need a controlled, secure method of storing the needed keys in an area that allows easy access for the intended individuals. I looked at several key lockboxes before finally deciding to give the GE Security KeySafe a try. This particular model is a permanent installation, strongbox style key storage system, with a 10-key pushbutton combination locking system. It is constructed of double-walled zinc alloy and holds up to five conventional keys. It is available in 4 colors (white, clay, titanium and black) and includes all needed mounting hardware to secure the box to a solid mounting surface. The 10-key combination lock system allows you to choose a custom code, which can be changed at any time, and offers over 1,000 different combinations in total. The case is solid and weather-resistant, so it is perfect for outdoor installations. Installation is straightforward and the included instruction manual is easy to read and understand. You assign a combination code by turning small switches, located on the inside of the front plate, using a small flat blade screw driver. The combination is easy to set and can be changed any time you desire. You can choose any combination of numbers you wish, but be advised that once you push down a number button it stays down. Therefore you may want to avoid using the same number more than once in your combination. The numbers can also be keyed in any order, so you should keep that in mind when selecting your combination. In other words, if you choose a combination of 1-2-3-4, you could key it in as 4-3-2-1, or 1-3-2-4, or any other order of those numbers. Of course you will not want to use all of the buttons in your combination, since the lock could then be opened by simply pushing all of the buttons in, one at a time, in any order. Once you have selected and set your combination, you will need to enter it in order to pull down the lock tab to place the cover onto the lockbox itself. There is a handy key clip on the inside of the cover, where you can attach 1 to 5 average sized keys. The Security KeySafe is extremely well built and is virtually impossible to gain forced access to. You need to be sure to remember your combination code, because if you forget it you will never be able to get it open. Although I appreciate the strength of this device, the thought of my keys being locked in the box for a lifetime, if I forget the combination, is of some worry. The mounting screws are also installed from the inside of the storage box, so forgetting the combination will make it extremely difficult to ever remove the box in the future. Another potential annoyance is that you must enter the combination code to close the box as well as open it. Once you key in the code and push down on the "open" latch, it resets the lock mechanism, so you have to key in the combination to open the box and again to close it. Since I don't personally use this key box much myself, I don't find this to be too much of an inconvenience. However, if I used the box every day I think I would find this issue extremely frustrating. Overall I find the GE Security KeySafe (model #001409) to be a great value and a safe way of storing my house keys for access by my children and other family members. I have been using it now for about 4 months and it has provided real peace of mind for my entire family. My wife and I can now lock our house when we leave, even if we are expecting one of our children to return home soon, knowing that everyone in our family can gain easy access to the needed keys to unlock the house. It was extremely easy to install and set our code, and it was a breeze to teach our children how to use it. My only real dislike for this product is that the combination can be keyed in any order. I would prefer the added safety of having a combination that had to be keyed in a specific order. But the GE Security KeySafe is definitely safer and more convenient than hiding a key in our garage or under something in the yard. It is well built and weather-resistant, so I expect that it will provide many years of trouble-free service. This is an easy product to recommend and I have done so to all of my friends and family. If you have the need to hide away some spare keys, then the GE Security KeySafe is definitely worth your consideration. ... show more
