  • GOOD LOOKING PLANTER FOR PATIO
I just received this planter, and was able to put it together and place the herbs in it before my husband got home from the Grocery store. So believe me, it was very easy to assemble. It looks great also, so much so, that I will probably order another one for the other side of our wall so that it all looks balanced. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars, is because I think it could have been better designed to make it more versatile. It appears that the company's plan was to design a planter that the owner would put dirt in and plant their flowers or herbs, but that's not what we wanted to do with it. First of all, it doesn't have wheels, so once it was planted with dirt, we'd never be able to move it. If I bought wheels and attached them, then the manufacturer said it would void the warranty. So we had no interest in doing any of that. Our plan was to put the potted herbs we are growing into the raised planter, and leave them in the pots. We found that leaving them on the ground invited unwanted pests, and they usually died, and leaving them on our patio table was unsightly. I wanted something that looked attractive and matched our patio furniture in color. This planter, while attractive, is very deep, too deep for my potted plants, so I had to devise a way to raise the platform and make it stable. I didn't feel like going to the store to buy some styrofoam, so I used what we had, several ceramic pots that happened to be all the same height. We placed them at the bottom, and then flipped the platform over, because it has a lot of ridges on the underneath side that prevent it from laying flat on the upside down pots below. The result for us was acceptable, but I do think the company could have designed the planter to make the platform adjustable. They include two plastic bars that have attachment grooves to place inside the planter (not sure why they thought these were necessary), but if there were more grooves and the bars were metal (the plastic ones are to flexible to hold up a platform) that telescoped to account for the slope of the planter itself, it would be great. I could have just put the bars in, where I wanted, place the platform on top, and then put my pots in. The problem I ran into the way I have it, is the actual base of the planter is full of plastic compartments (we plan on drilling holes in those compartments for drainage, as we see trouble ahead with them collecting water a breeding ground for mosquitoes) and two molded plastic long bars that run lengthwise and a lot of little compartments, and it was difficult to balance the pots so that they would be stable enough to support the platform. But it's okay for now. I took some pictures. I'm probably one of only a few people that would want to use it in this fashion, so perhaps my comments are irrelevant, but that's why I only gave it 4 stars. ... show more

  • A nice functioning garden bed as long as it doesn't arrive broken.
I now have 5 of these garden beds that I use outdoors during the summer months. I have had 2 of them for almost two years and I just recently purchased 3 more. I have had to send 2 of these back because they arrived broken around the base where the legs meet the garden box. I had a third one that was broken on the inside base of the tub at the drain plug stem. I didn't send this one back because I am hoping i can just epoxy it back in place (see attached picture). They seem to come in the same packaging despite ordering them from different sellers. I believe they are being drop-shipped. The shipper (OEM?) needs to beef up the packaging because it is very discouraging to receive something that is timely for the planting season and have to return it and wait for a replacement. But, the units that I did receive which arrived in good shape have been giving me great success. They hold up well in the direct sun and have shown no signs of degradation so far. My garden area consists of a number of large 4' x 8' x 16" garden beds that I have been using for my gardening for the last 10 years. I made them from Pine (except one which is cedar) and they have held up well until recently. As they are beginning to decay I am replacing them with these beds ( I put two of them in the footprint of one of my older beds with a nice partition between them that makes it easy to access them on both sides.). I find that they are much less prone to the varmints that like to pilfer my vegetables like mice and chipmunks. I stick a few stakes in the soil at the four corners and wrap one circle of screen around the bed and drape a screen over the top and it does a great job for the beginning of the season of repelling critters. Each bed can handle 3-4 tomato plants or 6 pepper plants and this year I got a great yield in both beds. There is a plastic plug that can be used in the base to hold a reservoir of water that helps reduce the watering cycles if the bed is being used indoors. Since I have not yet used them indoors (that will be this years project) I cannot attest to how efficient the water collection and feeding method works but will update in the spring on how successful I was. When using them outdoors, I remove the plug and let the water drain. I water the beds every 2-3 days which seems to be adequate even in light of this year where we had meaningful rain only twice the entire summer. The garden beds hold about three cu Ft of soil. See photos. The beds are nice and deep at 12" and they are 17" x 42" as measured on the inside perimeter. The water plugs are elevated so that when using them outside, they will retain water to about 4" before draining. This provides adequate reserve to keep the soil moist between rain or watering. There is a watering indicator which is just a piece of Styrofoam type material on a stick that sits inside a tube that mounts to the bottom panel of the bed. As the water level rises, the foam floats up and the indicator at the protruding end of the stick comes out of the tube to let you know the water level. The feet are in two sections. The longer section that attaches to the basin has a sheet screw that holds in in place, the bottom piece which I guess is about 4" just slides on to the longer section. What I don't like about that is every time I pick the bed up to move it they fall off. its not a big deal and I guess I could just glue them into place to keep them there but its worth mentioning. All and all, I like the beds and I hope they hold up for many years. I don't like that you have about a 50% crap shoot (at least with my experience) of having it arrive broken. That loses a star. ... show more
