This Kelty tent worked great. It connects nicely to my Jeep. The best part is it provides a covered vestibule area between the tent and Jeep which I use for my cooking area. This is especially great when the weather isn't the best. I can still make trips between the tent and back of the Jeep without getting wet. My only negative is the size. It's a very large tent and takes up too much room on trips where space is limited. ... show more

This is our 3rd SUV tent, we have a bed platform in our SUV and wanted a place to hang out/store our items out of the elements. The first two we had wrapped around the vehicle and we hated how difficult they were to attach to the car but also how unsafe if we started it to drive somewhere. When we found the Kelty Caboose 4, it was perfect. The area we needed to change and cook but also easy attachment with one buckle on the tires and to drive off there's plenty of ventilation with the modular side walls. I love how we can customize how much airflow/privacy we want with them. We have also used the tent standalone and it's been great there too! Setup is definitely easier with two people. We use the Kelty Caboose 4 footprint which is a perfect fit under the tent since it's wider in the entrance area and narrows near the back. It takes my husband and I maybe 20 minutes to put the tent up completely with the rainfly awning. If attaching to your vehicle, I recommend setting up the tent completely and zipping the awning down, back up your vehicle until your bumper is overlapping with the bottom of the awning and then unzipping it and attaching to your vehicle from there. Usually is a perfect fit every time and you don't have to keep getting in the car and making little corrections to be even under the awning! We've camped in 35+ mph winds and thunderstorms with it and so far has held up no problem! Kelty also has an awesome warranty system, when we had a small hole in the mesh they sent us a brand new tent no charge! It has taped seams all over the floor and the rain fly, a nice zipper that never gets stuck, and good stakes too! Overall we love this system and recommend it to everyone we know. ... show more

    • Cool concept, poorly executed.
So, I REALLY wanted to love this tent. Its almost everything I wanted out of a tent concept. Packable, huge, attaches to the car for dual camping, and massive vestibule. Its just not it for me. I used it at Electric Forest, and I believe the weather put it through its paces and exposed its weaknesses. EF was really rainy for half of the trip and then extremely windy and hot the second half. First, the stability is terrible in wind. We had 20 to 40 mph wind, and the crossed poles regularly flexed and flopped down, collapsing the back side. The design is WAY too dependent on the rain fly and velcro for stability. The sleeves for those poles, IMO, are the issue. They have too much flex and would be way more rigid had they also had eyelets for the pole to poke and hold into like most quality tents. No matter how much we tried, changes or tethered, the stability was very sub par in wind. The airflow is TERRIBLE. It has literally 1 ~3 inch port on the back of the fly to create a breeze. With the massive front entry and mesh, you would hope it would figure a way to flow better but it was just the worse. An absolute heat trap. And due to the stability issues, it was be hot or be slapped and collapsed on. The airflow desperately needs addressed. The zippers were also really hit and miss on the rain fly. Had multiple times one side would mess up and separate, causing a ton off zipping issues and getting stuck at the wrong time. Setup wasnt nearly as detailed as it needed to be. The video and paper we used doesn't mention the multiple velcro straps the fly needs to have on the poles, nor does it explain how to keep the rain fly pole in. The rain fly pole constantly falls out or over. It was bad. Cost wise, its a good price point, but id rather pay an additional $150-$200 and it be rock solid. I plan to return it for sure. Its a very cool idea, but it just really needs a lot of refinement. ... show more

    • Great Idea and Spacious
We got ahold of this for some extra space for kiddos on camping trips. This tent sets up pretty easy and includes a rain flap which is really nice. The tent is spacious enough for three kids and that's about it before it gets too cramped. If you're not attached to a vehicle, the fabric rolls up and stows out of the way quite nicely. With a little ingenuity you could also rig it so the awning is held up with sticks and guy lines if you'd like.     • Good tent, poor warranty resolution
I have pitched this tent about a dozen times this summer. It did great on the trial pitch in my yard, but on my second pitch two segments of the longest pole were damaged. In the printed directions this is referred to as the main pole. I was able to make a field repair and continue to camp. It was inconvenient for me to delve into the process of a claim, but also Kelty was swamped. When I did finally connect I was told to call a number and BUY the main pile for $10 plus shipping. I followed through by phone and was told it was actually covered. Great. But then the wrong part was sent twice. Predictably the miscommunications have piled up and here it is October and I’m still waiting. I have to say that one customer service rep has been great, but there is inconsistency in labeling and a less-proactive warehouse crew. I’ve been using Kelty gear for 40 years. This is merely a frustrating blip. If you need to make a claim you would benefit from having a collection of pictures available at the beginning- tent label, pole ends, measurements and the like. (And 5 minute epoxy and cable ties can fix almost anything.) ... show more

It took my wife and I more than an hour to put this thing together. The instructions were hard to follow. I wish they would have said, "Build the screen porch part first, then put the cover on after, then back you SUV up to it." But it didn't. Other than that, and now that we have our experience building it, we are very happy with it. The screens and very fine and I believe it will keep the dreaded "no-see-ums" out of the tent. The zippers are confident and strong and the seams and loops seem well attached and well sown. We had a little trouble aligning the side flaps but we think that was due to our back hatch being too high. Overall, we like it okay but would probably get a tent with a porch instead. ... show more
