I don't tie down the front and read of my kayak when I'm taking it to the river in my neighborhood. For that 40mph trip I'm fine with a pair of ratchet straps to keep everything secure. If I'm going on the highway then I need some peace of mind and these things perfectly fit the bill. The ratchet mechanism is easy to use and release and the hooks have a nice soft finish to avoid scratching my car. Until recently I was using a rope with a single hook that came with my kayak rack for tie down purposes and I'm glad I made this upgrade. In addition to not needing to memorize any fancy knot ties (which admittedly I should learn anyways...) these ratcheting tie-downs take half the time to set up. I can get my kayak secured to the roof of my car in under five minutes now!

The cord on these was a bit slimmer than I prefer but they did the job well and held my kayak bow and stern well for our road trip. I really like the ratcheting tension because they made it really easy to retension during the trip since things always loosen. They also released really easily when we were ready to take them off even though I had cranked them down pretty hard.
