  • Cheap and Good -- Please Test Rear Drag Properly
Style: 5000
I bought this baitfeeder reel for "bait and wait" kind of fishing. It looks really nice. Its instant anti-reverse function works fine. It lays down line on the spool evenly. The baitfeeder feature works fine. And the price is very very good. I initially bought a model 5000. I like it a lot that later on I bought a model 4000 and a model 6000 for my other fishing rods. There are three things that I want to point out: 1. We need to test the rear drag properly. The "tightness" of the rear drag is in the light side. And this is actually a good thing for "bait and wait" kind of fishing. The problem is that if I test the rear drag by using my hand to turn the spool, I cannot tell the difference between the lightest setting and the heaviest setting. My hand simply cannot tell the difference. Originally I thought the rear drag malfunctioned, and I sent it back to the seller for repair. When I got it back, I tried again and I still could not tell the difference. Finally I find that in order to tell the difference, I need to put line in the spool and test the rear drag by pulling line instead of using my hand to turn the spool. This is not a problem with the reel. This is just how the reel is designed. As mentioned above, the rear drag being light is actually a good thing. If someone prefers rear drag that is heavy, he may want to look into Okuma Avenger Baitfeeder 80 -- its rear drag is kind of tight, and I can tell the difference between lightest setting and heaviest setting using my hand to turn the spool. 2. All three model (4000/5000/6000) are almost exactly the same -- same size reel body, same reel handle, same size reel foot. The only difference is the spool and the bail. The consequence is that the small model 4000 actually looks too big, and the large model 6000 looks a bit small. Seem like only model 5000 looks exactly right. I don't particular concern about the "look". The only concern I have is the reel foot for model 6000 is a bit small. When I compare it with a Penn 6500 reel, the reel foot in this baitfeeder is like 1/4" shorter and a little bit narrower than Penn 6500 reel (the spool size is the same though). I have no problem mounting this baitfeeder reel on a heavy surf rod. Having said this if I want to mount it on a surf rod, I will get a surf rod that is narrower -- that will be a better combo than mounting it on a heavy surf rod. 3. I don't have a chance to use the reels for actual fishing yet. I bought the reels in preparation for next year fishing in early summer. Life it too busy for enjoying something simple. I have no idea how the reel will work in saltwater environment. Therefore, this review is kind of limited. Sorry about this. When I get some fishing experience with the reels, I will update the review. ... show more

  • 5000 and 6000 owner
Style: 5000
Update; I have now used on 15 river fishing trips. I would give these reels 6 stars if I could. Perfect with no failures during my trips. I tried the pontus from kastking; it failed the first time and 3 times after by disengaging and spinning with no line wrapping when trying to reel in. Which would Ultimately mean a lost fish. Sharky is a great real. "First review"; I've seen many kastking reviews review the reels without actually testing, yes go ahead and look at all the baitcaster and spinning reels available from kastking. Many will say "5 star, can't wait to get out" "5 star, seems like it will be nice". Review a product when you have used the product. I can't believe this in't obvious. I have honestly used my reels for about 6 trips now. I use these 2 reels for river fishing in Minnesota, I can not accurately define this as a saltwater grade reel as I have never had saltwater on this reel. Now the tricky thing about river fishing is the diversity, you cast a worm into a river, you can pull in a 10" sucker or a 40 pound Lake sturgeon where I fish. The kastking Sharky has a special place on my setups as the line clicker helps keep the bait steady in current with the adjustable drag, meanwhile it also helps keep big fish from running much with the high power drag. I would like to point out this drag is pretty smooth, when a fish takes line there is not a surge of the drag in some parts and hard lock down other parts, a nice consistent uniform drag power. The 5000 seems "just right" ( I have 80 pound braid on) and it seems to hold enough line for a big cast and plenty of room to fight a fish. The 6000 seems a little excessive for what I do, but again in a river with snags, you lose 2 or 3 set ups which can equal 5-30 feet of line lost, this reel holds enough line for losing set ups and still getting a good cast. I would recommend the 5000 to anyone on "big water" or river fishing that does not expect to lose much line or don't cast far with thick line ( I'm sure thinner line would make the 5000 seem much more worth it), I would recommend the 6000 to anyone that desires ungodly amounts of line or fishes heavy cover where losing gear everyday is a normal occurrence. I have lost about 5 set ups on the 6000, (rocks are numerous in St.croix) and it still has enough line for a good cast and a fight. For the $5-7 difference, I would personally buy 6000 series for the price. (ebay can be cheaper, takes longer to recieve tho). I hope this review helps out! And please, if you review a product... first use the darn thing before hand! ... show more

  • Price vs performance outstanding
Style: 5000
The baitfeeder on this reel is amazing I have used plenty of bait feeder reels and this one has one of the best audible bait feeder. The reel itself is strong and the drag is super smooth and POWERFUL... Actually it is to powerful for the main shaft. Which is the only complaint about the real. If it was hardened shaft it would be the perfect spinning reel in MHO. But for the price range it is an outstanding choice. Used for large striper here in TX rivers. Largest one was 22lbs and did not hesitate. Just need to be aware if you have to muscle a fish and tighten up the drag... You will bend the main shaft. ... show more

  • Well made and the bait clicker is a plus
Style: 5000
I bought a 4000, and a 5000 version. I have yet to use them. Straight out of the box, they are smooth as butter and they are beautiful. The baitfeeder clicker is good and loud. The handle has no backwards slack in it and everything feels nice and well put together. It doesn't feel cheap. I we I'll come back and do a review on it once I put it to use. I would say buy it at this point. ... show more

  • If you bottom fish, I guarantee you will love this reel. Insane value.
Style: 5000
I ordered 2 of the 5000 series for catfishing and I’ve never loved a reel more. Baitfeeders are nothing new for spinning reels but none are better executed. The clicker is loud enough to hear if you’re away from your pole. The reel is so smooth and it has no problem reeling in a heavy cat. The transition between bait feeder mode and reeling is seamless. If I may suggest a rod for this reel, the Ugly Stik Tiger Elite 7’ Heavy is excellent. Fav combos I’ve ever had. ... show more

  • This reel is great for 6’6 - 9 foot rods ranging from medium heavy to extra heavy.
Style: 5000
This reel is by far my favorite of my 28 reels, the reel not only excels in conditions where any other reel would break but this reel also works great for its action, the speed in which it reels up fish is unreal and will blow any other bait runner reels out of the water, though this reel is not lightweight it is worth the struggle as it casts farther then most high end reels and keeps tension on the fish like no reel seen before, the color options are great also mainly being red but a provided spool in the bag can create more of a dark look as it is blacked out to minimize the visible red as you might not like it. Overall this reel is great and meets all the qualities of a high end reel. ... show more

  • Kast King means QUALITY!
Style: 5000
This is my 2nd Kast King Sharky Baitfeeder III reel. I have a 6000 version, and now the 5000. I use them for surf fishing as I often wade out into the surf to cast, then use the secondary drag system to allow the weight to stay planted on the bottom, but the line somewhat taut as I walk the rod back to it's holder on the beach. This keeps my line from getting caught by the wind and greatly lessens the time spent reeling in slack before setting the rod in it's holder. So - did they hold up to two solid weeks of surf fishing with repeated dunkings in the surf? YES! I was concerned that the salt/sand combo would destroy the reel, but I would just giving it a quick rinse daily under the hose at the house (no dissassembly!) after use. After I got back from my trip, the reels sat for a month before I could get to them and take them apart for a 'real' cleaning. Imagine my surprise when I found a super clean sand/salt free drag mechanism, and ZERO rust. A light cleaning and regrease and I'm set for another session at the surf. This is a high quality, high value reel. You won't be disappointed. ... show more
