  • Questions answered about the Kasa HS210 before you order
(1) How many of these devices will you need to add Wi-Fi switching to my multiple-switch lighting circuit? Only one (2) Will the Kasa HS210 device work as a direct drop-in replacement for my existing mechanical 3-way switch? Yes for the vast majority of American housing, except that you will need to connect one extra wire to a neutral wire that you will usually find in the switch box. See the next answered question for more about that. (3) Do you need a neutral wire to provide power to the HS210 electronics? Yes, but it’s likely not a problem because you probably have a small bundle of wired-together white neutral wires in the switch box where you will install this device. If you don’t find a collected white wire bundle in the first switch box, look at the other controlling 3-way switch box. As another clue, if the box you are considering already has an electronic device such as a dimmer, occupancy sensor, or night light, the National Electric Code will require that a neutral wire be found in the switch box. (4) My light is controlled with not just 2, but 3 or more switches. Will the HS210 work in that circumstance? Yes. Multiple-switch circuits with 3 or more controlling switches are comprised of two 3-way switches (3 terminals plus a ground) with one at each end, and one or more 4-way switches (4 terminals plus a ground) between the 3-way switches. The HS210 will replace one of the two 3-way switches at the ends of your circuit chain. (5) My switch box is pretty full. Will I be able to fit the Kasa HS210 device into the space available? Most likely. Compared to the mechanical 3-way switch I removed, the HS210 chassis is the same depth and only 50% wider. To increase available space in my old-style and somewhat shallow metal switch box, I also replaced twist-on wire connection caps with more modern push-in wire connectors. After my installation, the box was less crowded than it was before I made the upgrade. (4) Do I really need a no-contact hot wire tester to do this safely? Yes. The switch box I used was occupied by two existing 3 way switches, which required throwing 2 breaker switches in my breaker box. But the box also contained another hot wire circuit which I discovered courtesy of the tester, and I needed to deactivate that circuit so I could tap into its neutral white wire bundle. The tester was invaluable in locating the correct breaker to use to deactivate that circuit, since it wasn’t wired to either of the 3-way mechanical switches in the switch box, being presumably a leftover from one of many remodels my house has undergone since it was built in 1960. These testers are available for less than $15 from Amazon and big box stores, and may save you from many shocking surprises over the years (pun intended). (6) Are the on-line directions as helpful that other reviewers claim? Yes, but even more so. They are comprehensive and well written, and make the installation easy. (7) How much power draw can the HS210 handle? The description says it can handle 600 watts (about 5.5 amps). Several reviews say the switch can handle 15 amps, but I think that is incorrect, since the formula is AMPS = WATTS ÷ VOLTAGE. In my application, the switch needed to handle 9 outdoor flood lamps, so I had to replace incandescent flood lights with 150-watt equivalent LED bulbs to fall within the rated capacity. ... show more

  • So good (almost)
At first, I loved my 2 switches and 3 plugs. They are sooooo much easier to program than the previous switch I had. Being able to set a schedule based on sunset +/- minutes is a great feature. It worked great. Then, one switch developed a problem where the schedule wouldn't work. I contacted support (who were very good at getting back to me). After about 13 emails from them (and several repeated debug steps including things like re-installing the switch), I figured out that the switch was not tracking when it was ON (supposed to stay green but did not). Their programming is such that if a switch shows 'OFF', they don't send a message to turn it 'OFF' which kinda makes sense, but caused me an issue. I was finally able to capture this in a video which convinced them to send me a new switch. Their replacement process was pretty good too with an option that let me put a deposit down so I didn't have to remove the bad switch until I had the replacement. Somewhere in the middle of all this, the sunset time schedule got confused (it initially worked). I noticed that the switch would turn on the lights at 9 AM which is obviously not close to sunset. I went back for more customer 'support' and tried many of the same debug steps again (why!). They still don't seem to recognize this as a problem. However, I found a workaround (in case you run into this too). I'm in Pacific Time Zone. I had set America/Los Angeles (out of about 20 available for Pacific (why so many!)). I found when I set sunset -15 minutes, my switch would come on at 8:45 AM. I found that if I changed from 'sunset' to 'time' in the action schedule screen, I could see 8:45 AM. So, now that I could see the time, I adjusted the time zone to get the proper functionality. For me, Pacific Time Zone maps to any of the GMT+1 time zones (I didn't try all 20 of them, but a few did). I finally set Etc/GMT+1. I've asked them to reduce the number of time zones to something more reasonable - in theory, they need 40, but can understand why they'd want a few more for clarity or if they calculate sunset/rise based on latitude (they have over 580 as of this writing). Just know that if you change the time zone setting like I did, you'll need to change *all* the other schedule events to apply to that time zone (so something iike 7 hours ahead); this is not a feasible workaround. In addition, as part of this debug process, they asked me to log in from another phone to see if that fixed the issue. I tried; it did not fix my issue. But, it showed me another fundamental flaw in their 'smart' system. They only way to use two phones is to share login credentials. In that same Email, they suggest turning on 2FA (thereby showing that they have no understanding of how this would be used). But, to the point, if you were to have multiple users (and multiple houses!), it would be a mess. If you get their cameras, you'd have to enable everyone to see everything if you wanted to share any of it. I'm sure you can think of other scenarios you might have where this is a problem. So, I'm going to use these switches for now. The plugs are great to replace mechanical timers. but, as I look to expand my 'smart home', I'll be looking for some smart devices that are actually smart. I wanted to use smart locks, switches, outdoor switches, timers, cameras, etc. ... show more
