  • Nice Compromise For Aerating
I have had hired a professional company to come aerate my yard. That is the best way as it leaves the plugs on your lawn to decompose, but this way is also the most expensive. I have used the manual aerator tool that pushes down and leaves plugs on the lawn, but this is labor intensive and the tool keeps getting clogged. This is the first time I am using the aerator spiked shoes. This I would say is the compromise between cost, labor, and benefits. I wear a size men's 9.5 shoe and the sandal and straps fit perfect. The spikes come pre-assembled on the sandals and every spike was straight and tight right out of the box. I have used these three times on my lawn. The first time was immediately right after a rain. I do not suggest doing this as the spikes and sandals got packed with dirt/mud. The second time was a day after a rain as I walked around my fourth of an acre yard. The third time I perfected it. It was again a day after a rain so the lawn had time to dry but I also mowed the lawn at the same time. Genius! Getting two things done at once. It's quite the leg workout as you want to make sure you step up and down without dragging your feet and turning took a little more work. I could see the holes in the ground I was creating. After I was done I took the water hose and sprayed them clean. Overall I am very happy with these and will be strapping them on when I mow the lawn. ... show more

  • Pretty good for small, quick fixes!
Lawn Aerator Shoes: Pros: They come already assembled and do exactly what they are supposed to do. Very easy to put on. I would recommended using the shoes the day after rain so that the soil is lose and easy for the spikes to go into the ground. Cons: I wear size 11 shoes and the aerator shoes do slip off by the toes pretty frequently which can be pretty annoying. I would also wear older shoes as when pulling spikes up off the ground they do add alot of wear and tear on your tennis shoes. Thoughts: These aerator shoes are better used for small purposes in the yard, as a full yard would take quite a bit of time! The shoes do what they are intended to do though, and can be great for some dead spots in the yard. ... show more

  • They work!
My yard is native grasses & wildflowers, thin topsoil, and 8600 feet up in the Rockies. Add in a dog or some kids, and you quickly get plenty of rocky bare spots that become hydrophobic and won't absorb water through the surface. Shoes like these are great for treating those areas. I used to make my own aerator shoes using scrap wood, rope, and screws. They worked but the screws broke on rocks. I took these bad boys out in several rocky bare areas of granitic soil and not one of the spikes broke. They penetrated full depth into most of my soil test areas with no problems. Some of the hardest areas needed a bit more of my weight to sink in, but they worked. And rocks were no problem. I'm sure through repeated and heavy use, I'll bend some of the spikes. The nice thing about these shoes is the spikes are replaceable. The spike heads are Phillips, and the nuts are just standard lock nuts. It may be hard to find the exact design of spikes they need however. But screws would work. Just use as thick as you can get. Shoes did come fully preassembled. One spike was slightly loose. I tried to tighten it but discovered the nut was stripped. It's an easy replacement. They come with a small pressed metal wrench for getting at the nuts in tighter spaces. The small steel shovel they give you for cleaning them is basically worthless, and will take little abuse as it's thin mental and the blade is pressed into the handle. I'll use it in the greenhouse for loose soil work only. Would take off 1/2 star for that & the one stripped nut, but since I can't I'll leave it at 5. ... show more

  • Worked great -- easy to use than expected
Effectively, you just strap these on your feet and walk around. I was worried that it would be difficult to walk in these, but on the lawn, you almost don't notice you're wearing them. Now, I wear steel toed sneakers in the yard, so am used to a "not as flexible walk." If you have super bendy shoes, you will notice a definite stiffness. Now, I will say, your experience will depend on the type of soil you have. Where I am, it's a softer, sandier soil. If you have a real hard-packed soil, you may have difficulty with spike products. Take a screwdriver outside and poke it in the lawn; if you have to fight, any spiked product is going to give you a challenge. These come with a little shovel. I haven't determined the point of the shovel. Someone said to me that maybe it was to clean the spikes. I don't know. It's certainly not strong enough to dig. But the stainless steel looks pretty. My only complaint is that the straps were all installed wrong from the factory (unless I put my shoe on the spiked side!) It took a minute or so to reroute the straps, and it is only a job you'd need to do once. Very happily surprised how easy these are, which means I can aerate more often. ... show more

  • Not fantastic with shoes, use boots
I Wear a size 10.5 and decided to mow my 1/4 acre lot with these on my shoes, what a workout! One issue I encountered was that the left one kept slipping off my shoe, even when I was tightening it very tight. There are no spare nails so if you break one, that is it. I wish it did come with extra spares. The metal plate feels heavy duty and does not flex, so you will be marching rather than walking around your Yard. ... show more

  • Works very well
The number of spikes, width of the spikes and the rigidness of the bottom make this a good combination. I could easily see if the number of spikes were reduced it would make walking unstable. If the spikes were less ridged it would be easy for them to bend and create the same problem. One of the things I really like is the nylon lock nuts holding each of the spikes. Each was tight right out of the box and I have not seen nylon lock nuts loosen on their own so this was a very good choice by the manufacturer. The only thing you need to take into account is having a place to sit down outside to put them on. You do not want to try and walk on cement or asphalt with these on. The only negative but easily fixed issue was the front strap was installed upside down by the factory. Since it is a nylon strap with Velcro fed through two slots it was no issue at all. ... show more
