I found this while browsing the Ka-Bar website the other day. I have been eye balling some wood hobo reel designs for a while and am familiar with the classic design as many are Im sure. The nice thing with this is it wont crack and split like wood when exposed to moisture and heat, it is made of a VERY tough material. This is a solid little backup fishing system with little to go wrong. It is very dense and can take some abuse.... but still floats. As a kid my friends and I used to make something very similar out of scrounged items at the local fishing waters using soda bottles, tin cans, or sticks. We would catch some bugs and spent many summer days picking bluegill, bass, crappie, perch, and even a few catfish out of the lakes and ponds within bicycle range.... good times ! On my first trip out I did not catch any monster fish but I did have a blast and it brought back all those summer time memories of my youth! I am considering a personal challenge to see how big of a fish I can land on this thing just to spice up my fishing trips. If you are not familiar with this type of fishing it can be a little fussy, and you must keep in mind that without a pole it is VERY easy for the fish to break your line. Reeling, or winding in the line takes a little practice to keep from tangling up your line when you hook a fish. I have posted a video on Youtube of my first trip out with this showing a little of how it works and what to expect. Zeuki1 is my channel, Backpack Kaster field test. And keep in mind what direction the line winds on the top if you are going after large fish with heavy line or you may ( unlikely but could happen) end up having a large fish unscrew the top of the reel if your not careful. Some Specs. Mine weighs in at 4.2 oz with the line clip or 3.7oz without and this includes 50yds of 10lb spiderwire braided line. This is a good thing to keep in mind if you plan on storing this away in a bug out bag or survival pack, braided line will not coil and bunch up over time like mono filament will. Length is 6 1/4" long and just under 2" at the widest point. The inner compartment is about 4 1/2" deep and tapered down from 1" to maybe 1/2" at the bottom. There is a rubber O ring to seal the compartment. There is enough room for a decent emergency fishing kit, everthing in the picture I show fits with a little room to spare. I love to fish but fish don’t love me. This works very well. I have two of them now. One stays with my light tackle / sunfish back pack. The other stays in my camping go bag along with some basic tactical. It’s come in handy when I did not intend to go fishing but wound up using this for an afternoon of fun. ... show more

    • Wish it was a little bit lighter
Yeah, it weighs only 4.00 oz, or 1/4 lb. So it isn't THAT heavy, but still, for someone shaving grams in their backpack, this hand fishing reel is heavy for it's size. It could've been made lighter but the manufacturer decided to make it bulletproof with the ability to withstand World War 3 and the coming Armageddon. For this reason, I'm knocking off 1 star. Otherwise, it's a nice reel, should last the rest of my life and I'll be able to hand it down to my kids who then should be able to hand it down to their kids and so on and so forth. I guess I'll have to suck up the weight because it really is a good size and should work perfect for a backpacker's fishing reel. Wish they would make a lighter version though! ... show more

    • Best fishing innovation since the invention of the PopCan!!!
After decades of fishing with pop cans and tackle scrounged from the bank, I decided to splurge and this is even better! It is heavier than an aluminium can but not enough so to make a difference when casting or carrying. I haven't been able to figure out which is handier - it can take a few minutes to find a can and tackle sometimes, but you have to have this on you. It has a handy place in the handle for all the hooks and other tackle I need and it keeps my licence safe. Casting is improved in both distance and accuracy over a pop can, and it took no time to adjust. The clip to keep the line in place when not in use is a nice upgrade. It is far more durable than a can, which easily gets deformed a ruined. About the only thing this doesn't beat a pop can on is price, but for the number of upgrades it has I think it's worth its price, and I'm happy I bought it! ... show more

    • The Ka-Bar hobo reel should be in every go bag.
While I'm a Becker BK-16 kinda guy, I really wanted the Ka-Bar reel, and after some research, I bought it. It's inexpensive, especially in hand. The reel is made from a lightweight, durable plastic that features the ergonomics of a USMC Ka-Bar knife. The top can be unscrewed, and the interior is hollow. I keep 2 worm hooks and 2 small panfish hooks, a catfish hook, a slider float (bobber), a small spoon and a small crankbait. I could add more even, but I keep a tiny Plano tackle kit that is kitted out for common southeast US species. I was able to put about 60 ft of 30 lbs test Spiderwire fishing line onto the "Kaster". 30 lbs is a fair choice when putting together a go bag (eg jugging, traps, "twine"); otherwise, I would go with 15 lbs for just novel/casual usage. LPT: Using a 1/4" piece of Guerilla Tape, secure the line after 2 or 3 wraps. Leave room on the end so you can secure the line with an Arbor knot. This is essential kit for bushcraft.     • Silly but works!
This thing works as all Ka-Bar products do. I walked up to the beach with a medium tackle box and a soda. I took my Ka-bar out and caught three fish in half an hour. Other fisherman (2 of them) who witnessed it were wondering how. I showed them my container of worms I had also in my tackle box that I picked up that morning. I used untangle-able line at 30 pound test so it lasts forever. I used a simple bobber, a hook, and a sinker. It works so good I bought another for my backpack. It has a hollow handle so you can stuff fishing gear in it. On a side note, the fish don’t know what it is so it probably confuses them so they bite on it. It does not have the silhouette of a pole over the water. Oooh it is fun to use. A little challenging to get used to. Once you get a technique down for casting it is fun and useful. It is great for bushcraft and survival as well plus it will probably last forever. I can recommend making them different colors though to find them easier. I would like an orange one. ... show more
