I saw another customer use this in a birdbath, and thought I would give it a try. A little concerned about squirrels chewing on it eventually, but for the month of January in Hardiness Zone 6a it's kept the water in our larger birdbath ice free. On the day of these photos it was down to 12 °F overnight (15 when I ventured outside). We had a couple inches of snow, which is covering the smaller totally frozen birdbath. You can see the water in the bin next to it frozen solid. EDIT: Finally hit single and negative digits. I've been clearing ice with freash water each day (Starlings splash it all out with their vain bathing habits), but overnight the puck has to fend for itself. You can see the progression. Keeping in mind, this is not a bucket, but a wide stone bird bath, I think it's doing really well! Easy to live with, even without and armored cord (so far). In Michigan, we get a lot of below freezing weather throughout our long winter. I use this submersible heater in a 5 gallon bucket, insulated sides with half inch foam, with 6 drinking nipples on the bottom. The water will freeze only within the nipple mechanism if temps are single digits or teens, especially overnight. I can usually break out the ice fairly easily by rocking the piston of the nipple around, and the sun seems to do a lot for it as well. The cord seems havy duty. I've only owned it one season. The media could not be loaded. 5 gallon bucket at 25°F There was no ice in my (almost full) 5 gallon bucket of water 5 gallon bucket at 16°F There was some ice at the top of my (almost full) 5 gallon bucket of water January 2024 At the time of writing this review, the description says it can keep a 16 gallon bucket ice free... I got ice in a 5 gallon bucket (that's not even all the way full) at 16°F Works good for my needs, I would buy it again, however I believe the description is a little bit misleading ... show more

The product is great but: We use the fonts/cups which hang on the side of the buckets. . The fonts have only had an 1/8 inch of ice on them when it was 20 degrees. (It thawed completely as soon as the sun was up.) The water in the bucket felt warmish. So far I am pleased with the performance of the item. I only gave 4 stars because when contacting the company I found out if I needed to return the item they would deduct $6.34 from the amount paid. the ad says "free returns." ... show more

I started using these in 2020 and have six of them in chicken and dog water buckets. They keep the water thawed perfectly in our Minnesota winters, and I’ve never had one fail. They are a great price, and compact. I just use one in a 5 gal food grade bucket with a lid and Rent A Coop nipples for the chickens. If a nipple freezes it’s easily replaced, if one of these heaters were to go down, it would be easily replaced, but that’s never happened yet, and our winters are brutal. MUCH cheaper than those all in one chicken waterer units that has to be replaced every couple years. The units in my dogs water have worked equally well, though they are more exposed to the elements than the ones inside the runs. In seriously subzero, my 10 gallon trough gets a light coating of ice on top, but the dogs break right through. ... show more

DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT - POTENTIAL DANGER TO YOUR PET AND/OR WILDLIFE I purchased the product in the Fall knowing we'd need it by winter. By the time the product was put into use, the 30 day return window had been exceded. Within 2 weeks of using the product for its intended use, the paint began to chip and the inner material to degrade. A refund was refused by both K & H Pet Products & Amazon - each saying the others policy restricted them from making a refund - even though the product is clearly defective and potentially dangerous. If you read other reviews on the product, the product can quickly degrade to a point where animals receive an electric shock when attempting to drink. This, of course, can condition the animal to avoid water which is also dangerous. We were lucky it didn't get that far. ... show more

Update on 09 Feb 2021: We are in the middle of one of the coldest winters in Iowa history. All last week and for at least the next two weeks, the temperature WITHOUT factoring in the winchill is -5 to -18 below zero. This little heater is still keeping up!! What a good buy this was!! I will start this review as I always do by saying that I received no compensation whatsoever from the manufacturer or the seller to write this review; it is my honest experience. I have had this bucket water heater less than one week. It arrived just in time for the first blizzard of the season in NW Iowa. I use this metal stock pan to provide water to the wildlife in my yard. The photos show how it works ~~ just as described, thus far anyway. The cord is long enough to easily reach the outlet. The cord is a heavy weight which should be able to withstand the cold. When these photos were taken, the temperature was 1 degree farenheit with a windchill factor of -16 degrees. The water pan is located on the south side of my house, under a wide overhanging eave. I tried a different brand of bucket heater a month ago and the cord was so short it was ridiculous; I returned it immediately. This heater is worth a try. ... show more

We have to keep the water outside ofr our dogs because they play in it. This keeps the water above freezing almost all the time. We did have one day that it was fairly thick ice on the top, but it was snowing the day before and the water was filled about a foot above the heater. If there was less water in the bucket, it would probably not have frozen the top. We have had it for one of our worst winters and it only happened once. Great so far! ... show more
