It uses an internal thermostat to keep the temperature at a desirable 102 when the pet lies upon the heated pad; and will remain 10-15 degrees above ambient air temperature when your pet is not on the bed. My cats love these things!!! It says they are for outdoors, but I have them indoors. I love that they don't get too warm as to hurt my pets (human heating pads get so hot!) and I love even more that they are pressure-activated so I don't have to worry about them when I am not home. ***Make sure you read the instructions when you first get them. You have to inflate them a little then push the air out. I completely forgot to do that with the first one I had. While I didn't have any problems, you should probably follow the instructions.**** My kitties like to lay on cat beds I have near the windows, and the windows can get cold in the winter, so once winter rolls around I put on of these on top of the cat bed. During the summer when the window is open it is too hot so I put it someplace else. The other one I have is not near a window and I leave it out year-round (my cats sleep on them regularly any time of the year). They come with these wooly covers which is nice, but I have found one of my cats doesn't like the wooly cover. So I put old pillowcases on them which works great and makes cleaning a breeze. I bought my first one (see pics - the one in the blue pillowcase by the window) in late 2012 and I have no problems with it. It is still performing well after 2+ years of regular use. It is a size small and as you can see my 10 lb average size DSH has to curl up some to have his whole body warmed by it, however he enjoys laying with the middle of his body on it and his head and feet off which I presume is to cool off a little. I bought the second one (in the tan pillowcase) in early November of last year and have loved it as well. It is the medium size. Larry can stretch out comfortably on that one without it being too big. My younger cat Lucy decided to start tearing up the pillowcase as you can see in the picture, but the casing for it is sturdy and she didn't damage it at all. These are a bit pricey but well worth the price as they are well made. I don't use them outside so I can't speak to that, but I'm sure they would do well for that too. If you want to spoil your special little babies, they will love you for this! Also, if you have multiple pets and find them fighting near the beds, they are fighting over who gets to use it and and you'll probably have to get a second one. My kitties were not good at sharing and getting a second one restored the peace. ... show more

At first I wasn't sure about this bed. Something early on told me that it should have been a lot warmer and I was THISCLOSE to returning it. But when all was said and done, I realized that the temps it reaches -- and the WAY it does -- is brilliant. I'm glad I gave it a second chance. The bed comes folded and deflated. Just open it up, pull the little red valve in the corner to its open position, plug the bed in and wait for 15-30 minutes for the heat to adjust and the bed to self-inflate. After it inflates, (which isn't dramatic, so don't anticipate the Hindenburg), you press a little of the air out to prevent a ballooning effect when your pet sits on it, then close the valve. Plugged in, but unused, the bed stays several degrees above room temperature waiting for some company. When your pet climbs aboard, it rises to 102 degrees and is perfect for removing the chill. It comes with a fleece cover that's cozy and comfy, but thin enough to allow the heat from the pad underneath to penetrate. A feisty animal might be able to remove the cover easily, but our user prefers to be adorable, dainty and compliant. The fleece cover is machine-washable. Excellent! There's a semi-feral in our yard who we've been feeding since we found her nearly starving to death. Since we already have 6 cats (and a bunny), half of them special needs, there was simply no more room at the inn for another. But I couldn't just let this little girl suffer out there. I go out several times a day to visit with her (can't touch her, but can get within several feet if I'm careful) and make sure she's eating ok. It's SO freakin cold out there and one day I put a *human* heating pad in the garage on a blanket and covered it with a small throw rug. Cow, as we call her (see pics), took to it immediately without my having to place her on it, which she never would have allowed. But I was scared of leaving it on without me being there - it's not meant to be either outside OR unattended -- so enter the K&H Lectro Soft Outdoor Bed. She's on it every night and many times during the day. I'm so happy with this product, I'm getting another for my 23 year old arthritic cat. He's going to love it. He's blind, but can sense a warm human lap within 50 yards, so this will be great for when said laps are unavailable and out shopping for more pet beds. (Not recommended for animals that chew stuff.) ... show more

    • Just what the doctor ordered
I bought this for our still young dog of 6 years old. She was diagnosed with double hip dysplasia and arthritis. We noticed that when we covered her she slept and was more comfortable. We decided to get her a heated blanket/bed. Our dog is 58 lbs and this fits perfectly right inside her dog bed. Her first day with it made us, let alone her, feel better. We could see that she loved the warmth and she did not ball up like she was cold. She lays on her left side now as that is where she feels the most pain. She sleeps longer and very deep. This has given our dog more comfort and has given her a better quality of life. We are so happy to have found this and we can see the positive affect it is having on her. As for the bed itself, it can't be any easier. Just slip it in to the included cover, plug it in when she goes to bed and it regulates itself. Just unplug when she gets up. We are contemplating getting another one for her day bed. We and our dog love this thing and it gets 5 stars for her added comfort. ... show more
