I've had the metal drop-in-water heater, but it was marginal in 5 gal bucket and the external drinking cups still froze. I've used light bulbs in hollow concrete blocks with water pans on top (dirty & could be dangerous). Then I purchased a 3 gal plastic container with heated circular bottom tray which started off great, but the heater failed in 2nd (3rd?) year. I saw a big chicken-farm lady on YouTube who placed the exact same 3 gal container with failed heater on top of the K&H heater base (this review) so I went that way, and voila! It works great, at least for the half-dozen freezing days/nights since I purchased it. I was worried that heat would not go through the defunct heater base in my 3 gal container, but no problem. This new unit comes on when needed, heats water and is safe for the coop. Seems like a winner to me. ... show more

This thing is WAY bigger than the picture made it look. My fault for not paying attention to the dimensions. No way I can fit this in my coop as intended but come to find out, that's probably a bad idea for my chicks for many different reasons. I live in the Northeast and so far the temperature has gotten down to 10 degrees F. The deicer has had no problems keeping a 1 gallon waterer clear of any ice. I will be trying a 3 gallon soon to see if it can keep up but so far it meets and exceeds expectations. Seems well built and keeps a nice constant temperature. With the small waterer my birds stand on it sometimes and don't get harmed. ... show more

I bought this in fall ‘22 for my poultry water fount. It’s now April, winter is still hanging on, and this heater is still keeping the water from freezing! It’s a large enough size, and sturdy enough, to easily place my 3-gallon water fount on it. It’s been a life saver for my chickens to have their water stay thawed 24/7! I've been using this deicer for about a week now and it seems to be working just fine. We've had a few days in the single digits and it does still freeze over but in the 20's and high teens it keeps it clear. It is outside in our run. It would probably work better inside a coop but I've always been told not to put water inside the coop as it adds moisture. So far very happy with it. ... show more

I have been using a galvanized metal heater base for my 2.5 gallon double wall galvanized water tank for well over 15 years and had to replace every threes years. Believe failure would occur due to the electronics and heating pad being exposure to moisture under the base. This poly heater base has all its electronics and its heating pad embedded into the poly with zero exposure which should allow it to last a long time. It has been working great this Winter but wanted to see if it would still work in very cold temperatures. Last night the temperature dropped to zero degrees F and the water was still unfrozen. I keep this under a 5 gallon plastic water bucket during the Connecticut winter. It gets gently warm, not hot, just enough to keep the water from freezing up most of the winter. On our very coldest nights the water will sometimes still freeze up, in which case I will provide extra water until the weather warms enough that the bucket thaws (with help from this heater). Don't know how I'd get our chickens through the winter without this thing. ... show more

Purchased this water heater for our chickens. The heating element lasted maybe 10 days before it failed. Checked the cord to see if maybe there wasn't power going to it. There was, just didn't heat up. Then with the Wright from a 5 gal. Chicken water container, the plastic on the heater cracked and fell apart. Very unhappy with this item. I do not recommend it for anyone looking for a reliable water heater. ... show more
