    • A kid's smartwatch that actually works.
After trying the TickTalk 5 for a few weeks, the short battery life and lackluster GPS I needed to find another kid's watch for my 8 year old to wear to school and trips. I looked at several other brands and even tried an Apple Watch but it wasn't what I was expecting. After Googling around I found a post about the JrTrack 5 and how other parents seemed to like it. I read the reviews and read the specs and it ticked all the boxes. Cosmo uses their own carrier service which you have to use. They offer at least four different plans to chose and gets cheaper the longer term of service you chose. It's a little bit more each month but at the time of this review it was unlimited call, text and data which was better than most of the month to month sim card companies out there. Activating was straight forward. You use the Cosmo app and set it up at a parent. Here you can add the contacts of people who will only be able to call or text them. If you're not on the list it won't go through to the watch. The watch uses TWO GPS chips for locating. We went to Universal Studios and I was able to do spot checks just to see if it worked and it zeroed in exactly where she was each time. Even in the airport terminal it was able to find her. With the GPS you can set up "SafeZones." These are geofenced areas that will alert you when your child has either entered or left the user adjusted area. Battery life so far is good. Even though we charge it each night, we can get just about two days out of a charge. You can set a schedule to tell it not to ping the location say overnight etc. This saves on battery life. The watch has a camera on it but currently does not offer video calling even on Wi-Fi. Normally that's not a problem, but the watch has an SOS function where it starts pinging the location and turns on the microphone so you can hear what's going on. It would be very very helpful to have the camera turn on also so that I can see what is happening also. Hopefully it'll come out in a future update. All in all, it's been a great watch. Call quality is loud and clear and most important she loves to use and wear it. If your kid doesn't want to use it then what's the point. ... show more

    • It is working for what I wanted so far
This watch has worked fairly well for the kids. First day of them using it they ran out of battery fast, but that was non stop use. Ever since it has had decent battery life. It also gives me better GPS signal than a Samsung tag, so that's good. Call quality is okay, texting is great for kids who can see the little tiny letters on their screens. Now, the billing. If you want the $10/mo tier, you have to pay for 2 years in advanced. Well, I wasn't sure how well these would work, especially for my 4 year old, so I just did 6 months prepaid, which was more than $10/month, but better than $20/month if I just paid one month at a time. Also, the charger they send with it won't accommodate a snap on screen cover, so if you want one of those, probably buy a different charger for it (I have one in my cart that I need to try out). The safe zone radius would work better if I could do it manually, but I get it, it's going to take a fair amount of programming to get something "customizable". I spent a good 10 minutes trying to get the zones in a decent area that I could work with. It is also slow to alert me when my kids leave the safe zone. The phone number was just assigned to me, I couldn't tell it to at least pick one from my area code, and it was spam blocked on the families' phones. That was kinda annoying, but once they were saved to contacts that stopped. My 8 year old loves the watch, my 4 year old still needs to learn how to use it, but likes making phone calls at least. My 8 year old has asked for games, but I don't see any in the apps I can download for them, but I haven't researched that part fully.     • Don't waste your time with others - I did, so you don't have to.
Don’t waste your time with others, go with Cosmo Unfortunately we made the mistake of going with two other kids watches (Gabb and the FitBit Ace) before we found Cosmo. Wish we'd found this one sooner because it's worlds better. This was the first watch our daughter (8yrs old) actually wanted to wear and the first one we actually felt gave us more confidence. The things we loved: -- GPS that REALLY works: So many of these watches talk about GPS but don't deliver. Our Gabb literally would not update (customer service was SO BAD) and the FitBit Ace was incredibly spotty. So we were excited seeing that this one had more sophisticated GPS technology and it definitely delivers. We love being able to start the active tracking feature and see her location update in real time. -- Messaging: The FitBit Ace only allows messaging through a separate app - something we didn't know until too late. Want your kid to text with grandma? No way, because she has to download and try to figure out a different app via google. Also not helpful for communicating with other friends. With the JT5 you text just like normal and love that our daughter can add buddies (with our approval) and text and call friends or family we whitelist. -- Music and other features: This part was the winner for us. These other watches are basically bricked devices (Gabb) or have gimmicky fitness games I can't imagine any kid liking (fitbit). But with this one, parents can add some select apps to their kid's watch. The big win for us was adding Spotify Kids. Our daughter loves being able to bluetooth to our home speaker and play her music while we're in the kitchen. Only cons we've found is that I wish the parent app controls were a little more intuitive in terms of managing settings on the GPS, and I wish the watch screen was a little higher quality (they have a nice screen protector available though. Overall, really big fan of the Cosmo watch. Bought one for my 10 year old and happily switched my 12 year old from Gizmo to Cosmo. Both watches are about the same size (big compared to a Casio), and in theory so the same thing. The part I like best about the Cosmo is that you can whitelist any phone number for calls and texts, which is a great help for my kids' expanding social circles (Gizmo can only talk to other gizmos, and requires all texting from inside their app). Since it uses standard SMS, I can text from Android Auto without using a dedicated app. Pricing is a little higher than I want for the service, but overall not terrible. There are competitors both more and less expensive. If you have 2 years of service, they'll give you a free upgrade - I'm not there yet, but have seen positive feedback online. Setup was reasonable as well. Required a few restarts and works better over WiFi - but nothing a reasonably technology competent person can't figure out. The app selection is also on the good side of acceptable. We already subscribed to "The Week" magazine, and that app in particular was a big hit. Flappy Bird, 2048, and a few others are also on there - and appropriately blocked during the 'focus times' that your can set.     • Great Kids Watch for Staying Connected
I recently got the Cosmo JrTrack 5 for my child and so far I’m really happy with it. I mainly wanted a way for my child to contact me when needed without giving him a smartphone. The calling and messaging features are easy to use, and I really like being able to manage the contacts through the parent app. The GPS tracking is also reassuring, especially when my child is away from me. The watch is easy enough for a child to use, and the setup was pretty straightforward overall. I think it’s a good option for parents who want their kids to have a little more independence while still having parental controls and communication features.     • Disappointing reliability; inconsistent pricing and performance
I purchased the JrTrack 5 hoping for a reliable way to stay connected with my child, but unfortunately, it has not met our expectations. The primary reasons for this are ongoing connectivity issues and unreliable GPS tracking. I’ve frequently experienced scenarios where the watch fails to make or receive calls, often resulting in a busy signal or a connection timeout when I need to reach my child most. Additionally, the GPS tracking is often lagging or inaccurate, which defeats the main purpose of having a safety watch. The voice call quality is also inconsistent and often sounds muffled, making it difficult to communicate clearly. We ultimately switched to the TickTalk 5, which has been significantly more reliable. The signal strength, call clarity, and GPS accuracy on the TickTalk 5 are far superior for our needs. I wanted to like the JrTrack 5 for its price point and features, but for a device intended for safety, the technical unreliability makes it hard to recommend. Beyond the technical issues, I’ve found their pricing model to be frustrating—the watch seems to be constantly on sale at different, fluctuating price points, which makes it hard to trust the value of the product. ... show more

    • Great option for my 8 year old around our neighborhood.
I'm impressed with the tracking on this watch. We live in an area that notoriously has terrible reception, no matter the carrier. Another mom had told me she had good luck with this watch so I took a chance. It's been great. Easy to control the settings, track where my son is (right down to the backyard of specific addresses) and get in contact with him. He can't add anyone to his contacts without me approving it which is also great. There are plenty of apps but we've limited him to kids news and spotify. We bought the watch specifically to be able to track our 8 year old son and be able to reach him while he's around the neighborhood. It's been very durable so far. Messaging is easy, I simply text him like normal. It's functional and easy for him to use. It was also a fairly easy set up. The only thing I would change would be the app. In order to make most changes you have to log into the parent portal which is outside of the actual app that tracks him. It's not a huge deal, I just wish I could do everything in one spot. ... show more

I’ve had this for about a month now. The service is shotty. We have to restart often to get it to work which isn’t a great option when your kid isn’t with you. GPS is about 30 min behind. Quality of calls are low. Screen is also hard to text on. You have to tap pretty hard to get it to press the letter. We use talk to text mostly because of this. It gets the job done and cheaper than getting a smaller child an Apple Watch or something similar. Band fits well for a child (6yo, 4ft, 55lbs) and the watch seems durable. Overall I wouldn’t buy for another child but it gets the basics done. ... show more
