  • Everyone raved about it...and they were right
Wow. I have been impressed with a lot of Joyo's products, but their Sweet Baby Overdrive was one that came highly recommended, and hasn't disappointed. I held off a little bit until the price came down, but the truth is that this thing is worth every penny it's sold for, and then some. As the description says, this is a "mild overdrive". It won't give you the "Brown Sound". It's not meant for metal. It's almost like adding a tube-amp "gain" knob to your existing rig, add subtle yet dynamic saturation and sustain to an otherwise clean tone. Chords and notes blend together beautifully without crunching up or fizzing out. Unlike many "tube" overdrive pedals, this thing has tons of volume on tap. You can set the "Drive" to 0 and still have a nice loud clean boost. Turn up the drive and it can do blues and rock. But I think of it more as an enhancement to your clean tone, as opposed to an "effect" that transforms it. In that respect, it actually reminds me of the BOSS OD-3 Overdrive, which is a vastly underrated pedal (though the OD-3 probably offers more gain). The Focus knob is interesting - it doesn't act exactly like a tone knob. As you turn it up, it doesn't remove bass, but changes the gain structure a little and opens up the tone. The lower settings are bluesy - the higher settings are bright and dynamic. But chances are, both will sound good. There are some concerns you could have about the build quality - the switch may not be built to last 20 years, and having to remove 4 screws to get to the 9V jack is annoying. I also wish they'd put the 9V adapter jack on top instead of the side. But those are mostly minor gripes. It's an excellent overdrive and an incredible value. UPDATE (Feb. 2015) - Looked back at this review, since I haven't used the Sweet Baby Overdrive as much as I thought I might when I bought it. Not necessarily because of anything to do with the pedal, but more because my amps tend on the brighter side of things, and it is important to understand that the Sweet Baby is a brighter-sounding overdrive pedal. There is no "tone" control per se, so you cannot do a simple roll off on the treble if you don't like how it sounds. Actually, a much better comparison for this pedal is the EHX Soul Food, which is as Klon clone, and was released a few months after my review. Both pedals are light/transparent overdrives that are not really meant to be cranked up for singing leads. Both of them trend toward a brighter sound, but also excel being "stacked" with other overdrive pedals for that reason. ... show more

  • Sweet Baby
I got the Sweet Baby with 2 other Joyo peddles (Vintage OD and Ultimate OD). I had read a few reviews that were pretty good and I had some gift certificate funds to use so I decided why not get 3 peddles for about the price of one of the bigger named/boutique type peddles. I am glad I did because I like all 3 dirt peddles for different textures. The Sweet Baby gave me a very mellow overdrive that works well on its own as well as pushing (or being pushed by) another OD peddle. I actually have been using it quite a bit with the Vintage OD – seems to give it a nice boost without getting muddy. I find the Sweet Baby works well on its own too, but not for heavy distortion (Ultimate OD covers that). I gave the Sweet Baby a 5 star rating, but like others have commented – the jury is still out on durability (especially on the clunky switch). I am not a gigging musician, primarily home recording and seldom events so I am not going to be putting the peddle through its paces like others. One issue I have with the peddle is the battery compartment was either too small or the peddle guts weren’t in there right because I could not get the case closed with battery connected. Might have been just mine or might be a common thing? You do have to remove back plate on this one, unlike the Vintage OD and Ultimate OD. Since I use plug in power, this is not a big deal to me. I got it to sound great through both solid state and tube amps (I prefer the tube amp though) as well as guitars with single coil and humbuckers. I would recommend this peddle to anyone looking for OD peddle that goes from very light dirt to mid rockin dirt, but especially for those looking for a nice way to boost (like with another OD peddle or pushed preamp) without muddying up the tone. Also, the Joyo line is very affordable for those of us who don’t have lots to spend on equipment. ... show more

  • Easily the value of much more expensive boutique overdrive pedals
I was admittedly skeptical about a pedal that for less than a third of equivalent pedals offered true bypass, a metal housing and boutique sound but I was pleasantly surprised by Joyo. Purchased on Amazon two years ago and it's still the most used pedal on my board. The Sweet Baby adds enough transparent grit to pull off rockabilly, surf and blues through my setup - a Gretsch 5120 hollowbody with low-output filtertron pups through a Fender Hotrod Deville 410. Up until about 11 o'clock the gain setting is subtle and smoothly breaks up with harder plucking. At any gain setting, the tone satisfactorily cuts through the band mix (another guitarist, bass and drums) without employing the nasally mid-range hump of other tubescreamers. The focus knob subtly boosts mids, but the tone generally retains the character of the guitar at any focus setting. When the drive knob is cranked all the way, the pedal rolls off quite a bit of the bottom end and with my setup sounds the most like the guitar tone in Kink's "All Day and All of the Night". It's enough gain for low gain classic rock, but otherwise plays well with other pedals. I like to use it as a lead boost when using with other distortion pedals. Only negatives are the location of the DC in adapter right next to the input jack which can sometimes awkward to get access and the light yellow font which can be difficult to read. Also changing 9V batteries is a pain since you have to unscrew the back, but you should probably be using a 9V adapter anyways if you play with any regularity. ... show more
