Description

These JET Drill Presses use a variable-speed motor with the stepped-pulley system, and come equipped with a continuously variable transmission. This enables use at a wide range of speeds, as well as the ability to change speed during operation. A scale-marked hand wheel that matches the desired machine speed is mounted to a reduction gearing system for precise operator control. This adjusts the gearing ratio between the motor's fixed pulley and the output shaft's variable pulley, changing the speed of the chuck. A tensioner pulley is implemented in the belt transmission to take up or release the slack in the belt as the speed changes. I picked up an older "Made in the USA" Dayton labeled version of this drill press on Craigslist for $180. It is functionally identical to the Jet except has a manual speed indicator and no table crank. It is a stunning tool - the 6 inch quill depth is awesome, the easily changed speed glides from 400-5000 rpm with a simple crank of a wheel, and it has a TIR of .000. I added a trailer jack to the table to crank it up and down, modified a goose-neck light to have a magnetic base, purchased a Jacobs precision chuck and whipped up a drill press table. It is the ideal woodworking drill press - and quickly changes over to a dead accurate metal working DP. It is a beast and weighs ~250 pounds so not too easy to get in and out of the shop. Wilton Manufacturing Group (WMGtool) who own Jet and every other drill brand provided excellent technical support and talked me through getting the drill back into full operation (drive pulley frozen, motor misaligned, depth lock missing) and even sent me a copy of the original manual. Don't buy a new drill press, look around and find a "Made in USA" older commercial machine - their manufacturing tolerances are better than the current Asian manufactured machines and they cost much less. Likes - Absolutely no wobble. The thing is a rock. 6 inch depth means I hardly ever move the table. Variable speed is addictive - you find yourself changing the speed for every hole and wonder how you ever lived with the belt/pulley speed change mechanisms. Split head so can take up any slop in the quill. Quill lock is easy to apply and then depth stop is a simple twist of a lever - super easy to use and dead accurate. Dislikes - the belt is a little noisy. The low end speed of 400 rpm is not slow enough for some bit/material combinations. The 5000 rpm top end is rarely required. Sucker is heavy so put it where you want it. ... show more
