The Jarrow brand is one of several I have used for folate. Another is Solgar. Both are reputable companies. This particular brand offers a quite bioavailable form of folate, methyl folate 5-MTHF in the form of (6S)-5-Methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF). (More on bioavailability below.) A downside of this supplement, that Solgar does not have, is that it comes in a plastic bottle. At least it is not clear plastic, so the supplement is protected from light damage. Folate is a vital B vitamin. A deficiency of this vitamin is implicated in developing atherosclerosis or having a heart attack or stroke because, in conjunction with vitamins B6 and B12, it is essential for lowering homocysteine levels. Folate deficiency can also lead to birth defects in pregnancy, macular degeneration, depression, and accelerated aging. Folate consumed from natural, whole, unprocessed foods is safe, and there are no known examples of overdosing on folate-rich foods, very likely because most Americans rarely eat very much of these nutritious foods. They include: beans, lentils, spinach, asparagus, Romaine lettuce, avocado, broccoli, cauliflower, mango, oranges, turnip greens, mustard greens, parsley, collard greens, and beets. In purchasing supplemental folate, it is crucial to know the difference between the terms, folate and folic acid. Folate is often used as a generic term for a group of water soluble B vitamins which are also known as B9. Folate is also the term specifically used for the form of B9 that naturally occurs in food. Folic acid is an oxidized, synthetic compound which processed-food manufacturers in the USA have been mandated since 1998 to fortify food with in order to prevent neural tube defects in newborns. Natural folate from food sources is metabolized in the mucosa of the small intestine to tetrahydrofolate (THF), the body's only usable form of folate. In contrast, folic acid is first converted to methylation in the liver. From there, it must be converted by the liver to THF, via the enzyme, dihydrofolate reductase. If there is very high intake of folic acid from fortified food or nutritional supplements, there might not be enough of this enzyme to metabolize all of the folic acid. Other issues which can lead to this problem include the following: a person has a genetic mutation of the MTHFR gene, which interferes with production of the MTHFR enzyme; a person suffers from liver disease or takes certain pharmaceuticals which interfere with folic acid metabolism. These medications include: anticonvulsants (such as phenytoin, primidone, carbamazepine or valproate), metformin (prescribed to control blood sugar in type 2 diabetes), methotrexate (an anti-cancer drug, also used to control inflammation associated with Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and rheumatoid arthritis), sulfasalazine (used to control inflammation associated with Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and rheumatoid arthritis), triamterene (a diuretic), oral contraceptives. All of the above causes can result in an unsafe amount of unmetabolized folic acid entering the bloodstream. Research has indicated that high amounts of unmetabolized folic acid within the bloodstream is implicated in the growth and spread of cancer. Scientists believe that this is due to two possible reasons: it stimulates the growth of premalignant and malignant cells and tumors, and it decreases the effectiveness of natural killer cells, which play a major role in the destruction of tumor cells. Since the MTHFR gene mutation is growing ever more prevalent in the general population, it is becoming increasingly common to find supplemental folate that can be instantly utilized by the body without need for any chemical conversion in the small intestines or liver because it is in the form of THF and is called 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF). There are various names for this ingredient besides the generic name 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF), including another generic name, methylfolate, and the brand names, Quatrafolic, Extrafolate, and Metafolin. It is also important to purchase a specific chemical structure of folate which has the best bioavailability, the kind with an "L-" or "6S-" in front of the folate word. Any form with "D" in front of the folate word should be avoided. There have been many scientific studies of folate over the past few decades,and a similar situation is found for nutraceuticals as is very common with pharmaceuticals, to wit: There is a noticeable difference between the observable positive effects when a drug or supplement is administered in vitro (in a cell culture) as compared to in vivo (in living animals or humans). Cell studies virtually always show far greater positive results than do animal and human tests. As a result of this variation, it is hard to predict how much positive result any given person may experience from any pharmaceutical or nutraceutical they ingest, as well as the degree of any potential negative side effects. Fortunately, unlike for pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals that are properly processed in well-maintained factories don't kill up to 45,000 people per year in the USA alone as pharmaceuticals routinely do. In fact, the only documented cases of deaths attributable to nutraceuticals, and there are very few of these, are from herbal weight-loss products which are often adulterated illegally with drugs or consist of formulations which rely overmuch on adrenaline-pumping herbs and caffeine.

One of the first things I want to know about a supplement is what it's appearance is and how big it is. Then I want to see the list of ingredients on the backside. And they almost never include either of these important items most everybody wants to know in advance. So that's the first thing I've done. You can see everything in the four photos below. Fortunately, it is a capsule that is smaller than a common 500 mg acetaminophen tablet – just barely over half an inch long. I have great difficulty swallowing large tablets after major neck surgery that resulted in my neck being stretched a full inch to accommodate my jumbled up mess of cervical vertebras after a bad car wreck that was no accident. Now I’ve lost a lot of space at the back of my mouth as it enters my throat and has 5 of my 8 vertebras screwed to a metal plate with ten metal screws. So I care very much how big these supplements are – no fun having one stuck in your throat for half an hour. Life isn’t enjoyable with 24X7 extreme neck pain and headaches as well – all because somebody was driving the wrong way at high speed and hit me broadside with a modified 1960s giant steel car – drove off and never saw him again, too. Back to Methyl Folate, which is also commonly known as Folic Acid or Vitamin B9. However, this formulation is no ordinary Folic Acid as I hope you’ve already read the promotional material above. I have taken Folic Acid (Now switched to Methyl Folate), Vitamin B6 and Vitamin B12 in combination for over 25 years to help keep my arteries clean of plaque. I had reason to worry because I was born on a cattle ranch in Central Texas, and beef was served almost every day of my life until I left college. And even then, for the next 15 years, my father had his best calf butchered every year and frozen for my trip back home to North Dallas. I ate so much beef I should be dead by now. My cholesterol and triglycerides were just awful for decades. Yet I still I ate beef, but I don’t eat it so much anymore after my parents passed away and I moved out of Texas for 27 years. Currently, my cholesterol is at the low end of normal in spite of a full glass of Blue Bell Ice Cream every night and I still eat beef – just not as much. I thought I was having a heart attack at Thanksgiving and so did the cardiologists in the emergency room. But no, it turned out to be gallstones. However, the cardiologist still insisted I receive a cardiac catheterization to be certain. I was 72 years old at the time. My cardiologist was simply astonished. He said the arteries in my heart were amazingly clean – not just for my age, but most any age. That was actually my second cardiac catheterization with the same clean results five years earlier. I attribute that to the well known folic acid (now Methyl Folate), Vitamin B6 and B12 combination. There’s a particular ration you need to follow. It can even slowly improve blood vessels from what I’ve read. Actually, the data that led to the development of Lipitor was based on manipulated data. The doctor purposely left out data from some countries that didn’t match his theory. The real issue is the size of the LDL cholesterol floating around in your blood. And the doctors never test for it. Surprisingly, the big LDL blobs just bounce off of crevices in the walls of your blood vessels. But the small LDL sticks in those cracks or wall defects and begin to build up forming that deadly plaque. I’m not sure what role folic acid, B6 (but not too much of it or it’s toxic) and B12 play, but it does help. So I will continue to take it indefinitely hopefully keeping the walls of my veins and arteries clean for the rest of my life, however long that may be. Proper blood flow is essential to maintaining good health. And not just heart disease – cancer prevention, too. I take 2 of these every day during pregnancy due to a mutation I have on the MTHFR gene. Because of MTHFR, I cannot have synthetic folic acid because my body doesn't know how to process it. These supplements are folate in its natural form and therefore the body doesn't have to work to break it down. They are easy to swallow and have no taste.
