  • All you hear are warnings not to buy inexpensive bamboo Shakuhachi..
Size: KINKO ryu (Key of D)
If you watch any number of videos on what not to buy as a first shakuhachi, an inexpensive bamboo one from an online retailer will top the list of things to avoid. But I wanted real bamboo as an upgrade from PVC, and took a chance on this one. Well, it arrived and out of the box, it looked very nice. It is one piece with no joint, and that helps to keep costs down. The blowing edge does not end on a node, so it's not traditional in that way. It's another way to save costs as either having a joint or looking for a bamboo plant with the 7th node ending right at 1.8 would be expensive. The utaguchi inlay is nice and looks well done. But, the most important part is playability and being tuned, particularly for new players. And I found that this instrument was tuned quite well and my tuner gave me pretty accurate readings for each note in otsu and kan. I find it much easier to play than the PVC one. My instructor checked it out too and said it's a very decent instrument, and was surprised to hear I got it on Amazon. Finally, you just can't beat the price. If they are all as good as this one, they are a real bargain for a new player to build some skill on and grow with. Give one a try, and don't believe everything they say on youtube! But also, do understand that this is not an easy instrument to play and if you're brand-new many struggle just to get the first sound from the flute. Don't give up, it's worth it. ... show more

  • Beautiful Shakuhachi with a personal note
Size: KINKO ryu (Key of D)
I was nervous to buy a shakuhachi - as I wanted a playable and professional one that was not too expensive. I found this shakuhachi to be very nicely made and (now that I'm able) produces some very beautiful sounds. It is all one piece and came in a nice case with a very cool blue wrap. It feels very high quality for the price, and am very pleased. Thank you Mr. Johnson. ... show more

  • A lot of flute for the money
Size: KINKO ryu (key of D) binding
I ordered this, then while waiting for it to come, did some reading around and saw lots of warnings about cheap shakuhachis online. I expected it to be Meh at best, I'd look it over and probably not keep it. But I'm really impressed! I'm a beginner, so we're talking the first two octaves here, Otsu and Kan, and it seems to do those fine. I've had experience with a PVC shakuhachi and the cast plastic Shakuhachi Yuu, and this plays easier than either of those. It's also a thing of real beauty. That matters more to some people and I didn't think I cared that much about looks but this thing is so beautiful, I've spent some time with a magnifying glass just looking at the beautiful grain around the mouthpiece and bell. ... show more

  • Beautiful flute at an affordable price
Size: KINKO ryu (key of C)
Nicely made shakuhachi, plays very well through all notes. Owner/maker/seller is very responsive to inquiries. Bamboo shakuhachi are usually quite expensive but this one is very modestly priced and affordable. If you want a flute of real bamboo, not composite or plastic, this is a very quality instrument for a low cost shakuhachi to begin your journey on this challenging instrument. Comes in an attractive case with sleeve and utaguci cover. I own several lower end priced bamboo instruments from different makers and I think this one is the best of the bunch. ... show more

  • Worth the price
Size: KINKO ryu (Key of D)
This instrument was beautifully made and the sound quality is amazing. However, the material used to coat the inside especially the mouth piece (uta-guchi) started to peel off so every once in a while the sound quality lessens. it’s still a great instrument tho and i love it.

  • Excellent shakuhachi!
Size: KINKO ryu (key of D) binding
I am very impressed at the craftsmanship and quality of this shakuhachi. The notes are true and balanced. The tone is full. And, most of all, it is easy to play. I have other shakuhachi, but this one is my favorite. Even the bindings are flawless! I would expect this flute to cost much more.
