Okay, hear me out... our reasons for purchasing this mattress were incredibly unconventional. My partner and I recently adopted a kitten. We live in a one bedroom, one bath apartment. We also have another (adult) cat, who's territory is without any contest, the bedroom. It's her room. So we needed to keep kitten and cat separated while slowly introducing them. This meant the kitten's room would be our bathroom. We adopted an Oriental Shorthair. They are an excessively clingy breed. They crave human interaction and affection, which can make caring for them as kittens almost as challenging as caring for a human baby. We spent days trying to figure out a way to get comfortable in there with him. Nothing worked. He required SO much one on one time with us that we were desperate to find a comfortable way to lounge in there with him. ...and we were also getting desperate. Off the cuff, and in the madness of my lack of sleep state, I asked my partner "What if we bought a futon mattress, folded it in half, and put it in the tub?" I might have been sleep deprived, but I am a genius. Once we got it in and settled--- honestly it was probably more comfortable than lounging on our couch. Speaking of... it now resides on our couch as an extra topper. That being said, I have tried this out on the floor. I am IMPRESSED with how comfortable it is. My partner and I are not small people and the fact that it supports our weights comfortably is surprising. If you're looking for a comfortable futon mattress this one is GREAT.

I am leaving this review after returning after purchase to share the item with a friend and discovering the reviews had taken a turn. I bought the futon in black to start floor sleeping 4/29. I use a tatami mat under the futon pad and have been happily seeing the positive results of posture and better sleep for almost a month now. YES, it took me about 4ish days to get used to it after 40 years in a bed, but now I will never go back. I love the portability and the habit of rolling it up every morning to tidy my bedroom. Food for thought: WHO is sleeping on it and for what? Most people will have a hard time the 1st couple days possibly even a week when making a full switch, so these are western people used to bed mattresses. Either way, I love mine, so I thought I’d redeem this poor futon’s Amazon reviews here

It's not thick enough. It looks thicker in the picture. I would not recommend using this as your only padding if you are using it on the floor.

Suprisingly comfortable for the thinness. I have a thin layer of cork underneath it, but it's basically on plywood and I don't feel the hard platform through it. Folds nicely too. It's not as comfortable as a thicker normal futon but as far as comfort vs thickness and price you can't beat it IMO. Would buy again!

My husband and I didn't like the feel of our mattress, so when we got this one we thought it looked comfortable (or rather, hoped it looked comfortable) and decided to order it to use as a topper. And, if it didn't end up as a topper for our mattress, we figured we would keep it for when guests stayed over- for them to sleep on (or us, depending on who needs a bed more). When it arrived and we pulled it out of the packaging, immediately we liked the feel and when we put it over our mattress, finally we felt we could get a comfortable sleep! My side no longer hurt when I laid on the mattress (as it did before we added the topper) and I finally felt like there was something plush under us- with the right amount of hardness to it (as we didn't want an overly soft mattress). This mattress is perfect- as a topper or for guests sleeping on the floor for a night or two. It is great to have on hand if you ever need something to sleep on- because for some reason, you don't have a normal bed to lie on. Only I couldn't imagine having to sleep on a mattress like this night after night for years (because I have terrible back issues)- with nothing else to protect my body from the floor- I don't think my body could handle it. However, if I were younger and could handle a single thin mattress like this- since it is so easy to move, I would consider this for sleeping. Also good as a sleeping mattress for children, when I was young my grandmother would pull out a foam mattress for sleeping in the living room- and this would have been nicer than what we had (although two people have to snuggle quite close to use- as it is a twin mattress)).
