  • Multiplayer is what makes this shine
I almost want to say that to really appreciate this game, you need to have played the original GoldenEye for N64. In other words, I do have some bias because that was a pretty landmark fps game, and I found it a highlight during my college years. Jump ahead a decade and a half, and fps have come a long way, so this won't stand out like it used to. There are a lot of great fps games for the various systems, but this is the best by far for the Wii. There are some great customizable controls with the wiimote, which is the preferred method of choice by many expert users. However, it's not as confusing to customize as say on the game "Conduit", which is not as good as Goldeneye. It lets you control what you need. I purchased a classic controller pro to use for this game, and it's great, although as good of a controller as on the PS3, but it's cheap. The best players with the wiimote are better than the best with the classic controller. I can choose from a selection of various controller button options, but I can't customize each button. I wish I could, but I understand they are catering to people who want to get into the game quickly, and the options they have are some of the best, either left or right handed. The solo mission can be vary difficult when trying the harder levels. Very hard. And I can go back and retry missions, so playability is okay. But where the game really shines is in multiplayer. I haven't been this hooked on any kind of multiplayer game, and I think a large part of it is because you can earn experience points with each fight and raise your level higher. The higher you go, the more weapons and accessories there are that you can unlock, enhancing the fun factor. I find this factor singlehandedly the best thing they've done with Goldeneye. You can see your rankings with other players around the world. You can play with friends, groups, or just on your own. You can play with or against up to 8 people at a time, and the map selections are very good. Some subtleties--I like the fact that this game is about humans on a mission, with a storyline that is very familiar with the mainstream. I have no interest in humans fighting aliens or monstrous creatures. I take interest in weapons that are of the real world, and missions that make sense. This is just something that I can appreciate, as it bucks the trend. Overall, I highly recommend this game because of the multiplayer aspect, which lets you play continuously by moving up the ranks. That alone is worth its purchase. As far as controls go, I find the wiimote to not be as natural for me, and I use the classic controller pro. I wish the controller was a little bit more sensitive, but it does the job. ... show more

  • Fantastic, indeed!
Goldeneye's single-player campaign is fantastic. Its multiplayer, however, is only partially up to snuff. In the one player mode, you have several different difficulties, just like in the original. When you play on the lower modes like Agent, you have fewer objectives and I'd imagine that the enemies shoot a little slower or something. And on 007 Classic Mode, you have to make use of body armor to protect your health, again like the N64 game (although there aren't any health packs). There are two ways to progress through Goldeneye: 1) Sneak around. 2) Blow everyone to kingdom come. Option 2 ultimately results in a Call of Duty clone, and that's no fun. I really enjoyed the stealth elements of this campaign. It's very easy to get into the scenario, asking yourself questions like, "Will I get caught if I sneak this way?" or "Will I able to shoot this guard, then shoot the one watching him before he calls reinforcements?" I know that I felt nervous for old James more than a few times while playing this. There are only a couple of spots where enemies spawn infinitely, which is great because I've always hated that. You can clear the area of enemies, then roam around completing objectives at your leisure. This too is reminiscent of the original. The graphics of the campaign are good, too. They're not the best Wii has to offer, but they're certainly up there. The online multi-player of this game is where it falls a little flat. Black Ops Wii, which was released around the same time, is all kinds of better. I won't say that Goldeneye's multi-player gameplay is actually inferior, but the graphics and overall amount of options certainly are. In stark contrast to the campaign levels, the online maps are verging on N64 material. Heck, I think Perfect Dark looks a little better than this game's online mode. But even so, the maps succeed in the fun department. There are an abundance of sniper spots on these levels, and the aim assist makes killing players pretty easy. Goldeneye is the only Wii FPS with a local multiplayer of which I'm aware. There are probably others, but it's doubtful any of those can hold a candle to this one. Worthwhile to the max, yo! ... show more

  • Takes cues from the original, but delivers so much more
Fantastic game. Did not expect such a quality fps generally, let alone for the Wii. The game has definitely grown through leaps and bounds from the N64 original, adding actual melee takedowns, realistic guns and reloading, great graphics and more immersive levels and gameplay. While this game may not be anything "new" to people who are used to CoD or Halo, Goldeneye 007 Wii is *the* fps for the Wii, and as such lives up to the title. Mission mode is greatly enhanced. There are elaborate and difficult goals, labyrinth and interactive levels, if you find yourself surrounded by a few too many bad guys, glance around for vents; chances are you can get the "drop" on them (pun intended). Seriously though, there are vents everywhere. A few qualms: no multiplayer co-op for the missions (but I guess that makes sense since it is Bond going at it alone) and no local muliplayer online (i.e. you can't play two "local" people on the same Wii online). That said the online games are great. Actually, just a little bit more on multiplayer: this is probably the most advanced part of the game. There are tons of weapons that you can switch on the fly (no need to restart the game to change weapon styles), there are grenades, remote mines, flash bangs, proximity mines available two at a time with each character (i.e. "Siberian Commando 1" gets two grenades and 3 proximity mines which you can switch back and forth between them). Not only that but characters have special powers adding stamina, accuracy, agility, bigger magazines...there is a whole new level of character choice going on here. Oh, and if you're Oddjob, you can throw hats for insta-kill...sweet. If you are fan of the original, you will love where this one takes you. But, like anything on the Wii, if you are a hardcore gamer, you will be mildly satisficed. ... show more

  • Golden Eye 007 "The good, the bad, and the ugly"
I am a big fan of first person shooters and have played a lot of them including the original Golden Eye for Nintendo 64. So here's my perspective on the remake. The Good Although it may not represent the original in everyone's mind, it is still fantastic. Unfortunately, it does not have the original multiplayer maps, but the new ones are great. There are some nice camping / hiding spots, but they all have some vulnerabilities so they aren't unfair. One of the more awesome things about the game is its unique game types such as, black box or golden gun. In black box one team tries to destroy the black box while the other tries to protect it and download all it's data. In golden gun you try to get to the golden gun before everyone else. Whoever gets the gun has an advantage because the gun is a one-shot one-kill gun. You do have to load one round at a time though. You sprint and climb a bit faster that Call of Duty and can even vault over small obstacles. For on-line play you level up like Call of Duty, and as you level up you get better weapons and gadgets. (Golden eye's version of perks) The weapons and gadgets are fair. You can get some pretty powerful weapons when you get to a higher rank, but none are to powerful for high-ranking players to die from low ranking players. A nice thing about this game is it has a fast on-line network. You can only have up to eight players, but people join your mach quickly. The Bad and Ugly It's not all that matters in a game, but Game Cube +1 graphics are seriously getting old. The Wii is not really under power (as many of the Mario and Metroid titles have shown us) it's that so many of the developers are too lazy. Another down side to Golden Eye is that you can't go prone. For the most part eight players on-line is fine, but for some of the big maps twelve players would have made them a lot more fun. It's a bummer you can't customize your own character. When playing on-line you just play as a random character each match. In tougher difficulty modes there are more objectives to complete and they are sometimes challenging to find. However, when it comes to a fight even on higher difficulty modes, It's still not that difficult even though you die faster, or have to watch your health and body armor level in 007 classic mode. It also would be better if there were more weapons, gadgets, and accessories for on-line play. There is a decent amount of weapons and gadgets, but not a lot of accessories. Well... that about sums it up... Though not as groundbreaking as the original, Golden Eye is still is awesome in it's own right. ... show more

  • Takes a little getting used to, but an outstanding game in its own right
I was a bit scared when I heard they were remaking Goldeneye -- easily one of the best games to come out in the '90s. Activision's attempts at the Bond franchise after Rare stepped aside were comparatively weak, but I admit nostalgia got the better of me and I was quite eager to see how it would translate to the Wii. In short, I was not at all disappointed; in fact, I'm rather impressed. The controls are quite smooth, and while the Remote-Nunchuck setup is perfectly intuitive, I myself prefer the Zapper setup just because it adds a little atmosphere to playing the game. Reaching around to get some of the buttons can be awkward at times, but if it bothers you too much, either use the traditional setup or use a controller -- either a Gamecube one or a Classic controller will do nicely. The only significant hiccup I've noticed so far occurs when I'm sprinting and run over a gun dropped by an enemy; since A is to sprint, and holding A over a dropped gun picks it up, I'll often mistakenly swap out guns. Aside from that blip, though, I found the controls remarkably simple to pick up and play. Just be sure to turn the sensitivity DOWN if you're using the Wii remote and UP if you're using a controller. Some of the gameplay features are great, and others are a bit annoying. Stealth becomes a huge factor in this game, probably more so than any other; whether it's perfectly timing a silenced headshot, hacking an enemy turret, or sneaking up behind an enemy for a nonlethal takedown, you need to do more than just run in with guns blazing to do well at this game. When you do find yourself in a firefight, you can duck behind cover and look down the sight to pop up for shot. Furthermore, the looking-down-sight feature is great; not unlike Call of Duty (I wonder why...?), it makes things a lot easier by increasing your accuracy and lowering your sensitivity. What's missing, though, is the ability to dual-wield seen in some previous games (twin Moonrakers, anyone?) and the ability to throw live grenades back (this is just a personal preference, though). The story undergoes some pretty significant changes, not the least of which being Daniel Craig's replacement of Pierce Brosnan as 007. The overall point of the game is the same -- stop Janus from using the Goldeneye -- but getting to that point takes a much different path. For example, Bond meets Onatopp at a nightclub, not a casino, and he is actually AT Severnaya when it's sabotaged. It bothered me at first, but in its own right the story is still quite gripping. The visual presentation of the game is very cinematic, and, provided it's on the Wii, quite impressive. Player movement is very realistic, and the modeling is done well. Many of the environments are quite stunning; the Jungle level springs to mind here. The sound quality is also quite good, although the voice acting is a bit cheesy at times. Multiplayer is likely what will make this game shine. Local multiplayer is quite enjoyable, but online matches support up to 8 players and thus have a bit more replay value. Traditional free-for-all and team deathmatches exist, along with Bond-themed Black Box and Goldeneye modes; Black box is similar to traditional Counterstrike matches, while Goldeneye is sort of a convoluted game of Capture the Flag. An EXP-based leveling system, again not dissimilar to that of Call of Duty, keeps you coming back with accolade-based unlockable features. The only gripe I have about multiplayer is the lack of host migration; once the host quits, you either have to wait for a new host to join or join a new game, which is annoying but realistically just a minor inconvenience. All things considered, it isn't fair to expect the second coming of Goldeneye N64 with this game. If that's what you want, get an emulator with a good USB adapter or go find an old N64 at a used game shop. However, Goldeneye Wii is easily one of the best games for the Wii to date, and we can only hope this is a sign of things to come. ... show more

  • Seamless, enjoyable FPS experience on Wii.
Other reviews have pretty much written everything that can be said, but this is as near a flawless FPS as exists on the Wii. The graphics are solid, there is plenty of replay value in the different modes, the different missions of plenty of unique feel. Some things that were quite strong: - Cinematic cut scenes seamlessly integrated - With the exception of the Nigeria mission, which felt tacked-on, the overall graphics feel is good (for the Wii) - Nice voice acting with Daniel Craign and Judi Densch, and good sound track - Robust set of missions and objectives, and some nice challenges - Nice mix of weapons - Stealth vs. Blasting offers a nice way to approach every objective completely differently, with a different set of challenges Although the story is familiar to anyone who has seen the movie, the only unfortunate part, it is still very strong for an FPS. I've played others where the story or the voice acting was more of an irritant and detraction than an enhancement. All in all, the Wii is for the kids, but this the one game bought for the adults in the room, and my favorite by far. ... show more

  • Golden Eye 007 for wii
first off, this game is great. it is probably one of the best wii games i have ever played. it is full of action, and exciting. it is a lot like the call of duty games. one of the only differences is that you do more sneaking around, then just firing through rounds at the enemy. (in Golden eye) In this game, you are James Bond. you go around penetration bases, taking out facilities, and other intriguing missions. at first, you start with a companion in your missions. but that is not the same by the end. you will have quite a few suprises in this game. You are put in all different terrains, and situations. you go from the seaside, the jungle, memorial parks, and many more places. I used the wii "Sharp Shot", even though it is not supposed to be used with this game. it worked though, but i would recommend you use the wii "Zapper", or a regular contoller and nunchuck. I have not played multi-player yet, but i am sure it will be great. the only problem i have with this game, is that it is not very long. i beat the game on easy in one week! but, i still can play on harder difficulties. But don't let that stop you from buying it, beacuse i guarentee you will be pleased with it. ... show more
