    • Solid music and call performance, decent background sound cancellation on calls
Style: Elite 65t Color: Titanium Black
This is a review for the Jabra Elite 65t true wireless headset. Unlike most reviewers here, my primary interest is not in the sound quality while playing music, although that’s certainly important as well. Rather, I’m looking for a moderately priced Bluetooth headset for making and receiving calls, both in the office and while outside and in a moving vehicle. Important factors, to me, are my ability to hear the caller on the other end, the ability for the caller to clearly hear me, and the ability of the headset to block out background noise so that the person on the other end can hear me clearly. For the past year I’ve been using the Taotronics TT-BH026. It’s a decent headset, with nice sound quality on my end. However, in recent months I’m finding that I need to take more calls outside and in the car, and that’s where the Taotronics falls short. It does a good job of cancelling background noise, but also cancels my voice in the process. The end result is that the person on the other end of the call can’t hear me. So, after some research, I decided to try the Jabra Elite 65t. After a day of real-world use, here are my initial observations: The Jabra is a clear improvement over the Taotronics. On my commute this morning I made a series of calls to my voicemail, using a) the Taotronics, b) the Jabra, and c) just the phone (Google Pixel 2XL) by itself. When I reached the office I made a call to my voicemail using the headset on my desk phone. End result is that the Pixel, by itself, has the best call clarity. Of course it has $1000 worth of fancy noise canceling microphones and 1.5GHz of CPU power behind it, so I'd expect that. The Jabra, and desk phone headset, were nearly equal in a quiet environment. The Taotronics had volume issues unless I yell. And it sounds very muffled in all circumstances. When I speak fast, or not at full volume, the words blur together. The Jabra doesn’t have that limitation. In terms of noise cancelling, the old and new headsets are not hugely different. Background noise still comes through, but in different ways. The Taotronics kind of blurs the background noise, but slightly blurs the speech at the same time. On the Jabra the background noise comes through, but with less overall distortion of everything. I had no trouble hearing and understanding speech on the Jabra. Retesting in a quiet environment confirmed those results across the board. Other things that I like: 1) The sound pass-through functionality is nice. Some reviewers like it, and some hate it. I like it. 2) The companion app has a number of equalizer and white noise functions that I like quite a bit. 3) I had no trouble pairing. It was paired, and up and running, in seconds. 4) Sound quality for music is solid. The equalizer works very well. 5) People on calls are no longer asking me to repeat myself! 6) Love the fact that they turn on, and pair to your phone, when you take them out of their charging case. By the time you get them into your ears, they are ready to go. Of course I only figured this out after I repeatedly turned them off while trying to turn them on after putting them in my ears. More on documentation later… 7) Love the fact that they can be configured to pause sound/mute call when you take one out of your ear, and resume when you put it back in. 8) The earbuds are comfortable in the ear, after you experiment with the different size silicone tips. They come pre-installed with the small tips. I tried the largest tips, which fit better, but were a bit painful after a while. Now on to the medium tips, which are just right. 9) LOVE that I can have them connected to multiple devices simultaneously. As I type this, they are connected to both my phone and my computer. I can take a call on the phone, hang up, and place a Slack or Teams or WebEx call on the computer without having to touch or switch anything. It just happens. Love that. Things I’m not as excited about: 1) These little suckers are slippery! Trying to get hold of them to pull them out of their charging case, and trying to hold onto them to put them in your ears, is a challenge until you get used to it. 2) Some reviewers have noted that you have to push hard enough on the volume buttons that you push the earbud into your ear canal. I found the same to be true at first. But after a bit of familiarity, I found that you don’t have to push nearly as hard if you push in just the right spot at the right angle. It just takes some practice. 3) Ok, here’s the weird one. Getting the charging case open takes some practice. It’s nearly impossible to get open until you discover that you have to squeeze the sides of the main part of the case, and press upward on the lid at the same time. I guess it’s supposed to prevent the lid from popping open accidentally. But the documentation should tell me the secret. Oh, the documentation. Again, more on that later… 4) There are 4 Jabra apps in the Google Play store. Which one works with this headset? Hey, install them all, and try them all, until you find the one that lists the Jabra Elite 65t. Seriously? The documentation should give some guidance. Or give me a QR code on the package that I can scan. 5) About that documentation… that’s the biggest issue here. There is none. At least none that is usable. This is very much a “figure it out your own damned self” situation. I’m extremely tech savvy. I never read the documentation unless I need to. But come on, guys, at least give me a head start here. The booklet that comes with these things has 3 relatively meaningless pictures, and no accompanying text. After you find the appropriate application, and dig through it far enough, you find another 3-4 cryptic pictures, and again no text. I’m starting to figure this thing out, but it really shouldn’t be this hard. Overall, the Jabra Elite 65t is a solid product, but with lacking informational infrastructure around it. It’s a clear step up, has nice music sound quality, and does a decent job handling calls in both quiet and noisy environments. I’ll be sticking with it. ... show more

    • Fantastic product that hurts to use!

Off the bat I do have to say, I am a HUGE fan of the product here... but I do have issues. First and foremost, the sound quality is fantastic for something so compactly packaged. I like to think of myself as somewhat of an audiophile, though I don’t have quite the refined ear of some of my colleagues who work as sound engineers. Nevertheless, even they were overwhelmed by the audio delivery of such a tiny device. The pass through audio takes some getting used to - it provides an effective background soundscape that is of a far less quality than the audio files stored on my phone (obviously!), so you end up with a weird mix of high quality, heavily produced music playing in your ear, over a fervently high range and tinny version of the outside world. It’s jarring for the initial few minutes, but something I have grown to greatly appreciate. It can be turned on and off at the double tap of a button on your right ear, and is probably the function I use the most. I feel much safer walking to a busy NYC subway knowing I can hear the traffic around me, but when I arrive on the platform it becomes a simple button press to remove the outside world and focus in on the song I want to listen to. The difference is enormous, and shouldn’t be understated. It also works well in an office environment, where I can now listen to music and readily hear when someone wants to talk to me. Removing a single earpiece works wonders to cut the audio so I can properly engage, but it’s not impossible to hold a conversation even with both earpieces in (kinda makes it sound like the other person is talking to you with a handkerchief over their mouth, but for passing exchanges there’s little need to remove an earpiece... unless they’re softly spoken)! More often than not, it gives me enough of an indication that I can whip one (or both) of the earpieces out of my ear when someone is approaching, and a proper conversation can take place (the auto shut off of the music when you remove one earpiece is instantaneous and incredibly helpful). That being said, the microphones do pick up a area of sound far wider than your actual ears can, but then can’t do a great job of translating that into a surround scape (I think it’s still stereo, but feels largely mono). So I have found myself in situations where someone is talking from behind my back or off to one side, and I could hear them as well as the person in front of me. It’s occasionally confusing, and you lose a sense of which direction the sound is coming from. I was at a cashier recently with the earpieces in, and didn’t realise the person in front of me was asking if I wanted a bag or not... I thought it was the cashier one station down, and just came across a little rude and inattentive! Lastly, the comfort of these things feels largely hit or miss based on your ears. The earpiece fits my right ear perfectly, and I could listen to it all day. But the left earpiece hurts like hell after an hour+ of wearing. The default padding is clearly too big, but the provided “small” padding is SO much smaller as to prove utterly ineffective. I lose all ability for the piece to stay firmly in my ear at motion, and the outside world bleeds into my audio to a degree as if I wasn’t wearing the earpiece at all. I would gladly fork over extra cash if I could get an ear cup that is sized between small and regular, but the difference between the small, standard and large earcups is so enormous as to negate any kind of fine selection. It’s still early days though, and some other reviewers have stated that their ears managed to “get used” to the feeling of having these devices in there. I hope that’s the case, because I love the sound and convenience so much. I just don’t want to spend $200 to sit with an ear ache all day should I want to have an extended listening period. I’m going to look into potential third party replacement earcups, and will circle back if I find something that works. In summary - SUCH an incredible product, but it’s unbelievably frustrating that at this price level they weren’t able to provide 5 subtly different rubber earcup sizes instead of the 3 incredibly disperate ones.
