  • On-ears Better than Earbuds. At Least These Are, Anyway! On-ears Better than Earbuds. At Least These Are, Anyway!
I’ve bought and returned/sold many pairs of Bluetooth headphones for running and general use the last few years, and a few have been pretty good, but these are the first truly satisfying (even exciting!) ones I’ve found. The best ones before these were the Powerbeats Pros, but those I could only get the very best sound from when I pressed them into my ear canals. I didn’t especially want to press my earbuds into my ear canals at all times, so I continued my search, and finally I found an article online listing the best running headphones that mentioned these Jabras. It had never really occurred to me to get on-ear Bluetooth headphones for running or general portability, but I’m so glad I did. These are comfortable, easy to use, stable, and, best of all, great-sounding no matter what I’m doing. They’re on-ear, not over-ear, so they still allow some outside sound (which I want), but they certainly can be turned up loud enough to block out outside sound when you want. Sound is rich across all frequencies. Bass is nice and deep without overwhelming the clarity of the mids and highs. I like the buttons on the earpiece. Pretty easy to use, though I have occasionally accidentally activated Siri, which is the button directly opposite from the volume and play/pause buttons, so it just takes a little getting used to how you grab the ear cup to not do that. And even though the 3-button vol +/play-pause/vol - combo is easy to find by touch, you have to feel around them a little bit to sense the difference between them. But I like that they are solid buttons that click, so you really know you’re pressing them. And they make a nice little clicking sound in the earphones. I also like that when you do use Siri or voice dictation or whatever, it plays the actual sound of your voice as you’re doing it in your phones. Little weird at first, but neat and helpful. Bonus: battery life is incredible. I’ve used them several times, not sure how many hours, and every time I turn turn them on, the lovely lady voice of the headphones says “battery high.” I couldn’t be happier that I’m leaving the world of earbud headphones. Two last little things, one negative, one positive: Negative: The “thunking” sound in your ears when you walk or run is probably worse than with typical earbud headphones. I got used to it quickly, and it’s made up for for me by the fact that the sound is so good and doesn’t fluctuate because there’s no earbud subtly moving in and out of the air canal as I walk/run. It’s just constant deep, clean sound. Positive: It comes with a neat extra feature of various sounds you can play through the app, such as white noise, running water, thunderstorm sounds, etc. It’s an unexpected bonus feature, and it’s really easy to use. It came in handy when I recently took an airline flight a week after getting the headphones, because it was something that I could still listen to without Internet when I wanted to block out some of the noise around me. Immersive and relaxing. ... show more

  • The best sub-$100 on-ear headphones on Amazon.
I tested out several sub-$100 on-ear headphones, and the Jabra Elite 45h was my final choice. First, a warning about the Amazon reviews: Many if not most of the reviews are for the over-ear 85h model. I don't know why Amazon lumped the two different models together, but pay attention when reading the reviews. Pros: Very comfortable. I've worn them for hours with no ear pressure discomfort at all. They weight less than 6 oz, and have a padded headrest. Longest battery life. After two days of use, I'm down to 88% power. Allows connection to two devices. Bluetooth 5.0, allowing them to function all over my house. 40 mm drivers. They work while plugged into USB-C power, the only model that I've found that allows this since my old Logitech WP-350. Great sound, made even better by a really cool feature unique among the tested units: There's a phone app that allows you to tweak the sound and features. It even has a hearing test which independently tests each of your ears (you know...press the button if you hear the tone), and tailors the headphones to your hearing profile. On top of this is a five band equalizer, the ability to adjust how long they stay on (including indefinitely), and other features. While these features are only available via smart phone, your settings remain in the headphones while using them with a computer. Cons: No jack for wired connection. They only work by Bluetooth. No active noise suppression. For me, not an issue because I need to be able to hear outside sounds, which is why I only looked at on-ear models. ... show more

  • The good, the bad and the missing...
Please allow me to put this review in context. I am an older male with mild tinnitus, neck problems, a large-ish head and a collection of cheap and expensive headphones which I cannot or will not take outside or wear for prolonged periods. I don't fancy myself an audiophile, but as a musician I can identify and appreciate quality sound reproduction. My hope for the Jabra Elite 45h was to find a reasonably-priced set which allows me to listen to music and answer calls for extended periods using my cell while on long walks/hikes outdoors. First, here's the good. The set is lightweight, has comfortable earpads and exerts just adequate clamping pressure to stay in place during vigorous walks. I can wear this for hours! My ears receive adequate ventilation and don't get hot or sweaty at room temperature. Sound quality is good for the price, with decent clarity and a small soundstage effect. The caller's voice is very clear during phone use. The battery charge seems to last forever. The bluetooth connection is great and I can walk anywhere in my home while the phone is charging. I found control button positions to be more intuitive than on other models. The downloadable app makes adjustments a breeze. Now, here's the bad. These will not stay on your head if you bend over with any force; the headband flops over with just a quick nod. While the sound is clear, it remains thin even after several eq adjustments. If you enjoy pounding bass, these will not satisfy. While not nearly as comfortable, my JBL Tune 510BT set sounds appreciably better in terms of fullness, clarity, separation and soundstaging, and they cost a third of the price on sale. The compromised placement of the microphones on the Jabra also makes it prone to picking up ambient noise during calls. Finally, the USB charging cable was missing from the packaging which was factory-sealed when I received it, and the manual is not included and must be downloaded. ... show more

  • Best Over the Ear Headphones Under $100
I would give the Jabra Elite 45h a 4.75-star rating if it were an option. Docking .25 of a point as the EQ app is not supported for use with a Windows laptop. Otherwise, the model Elite 45h is an almost perfect pair of $99 headphones. The quality starts with the minimalist but aesthetically pleasing packaging, and this level of minimalist aesthetic and high quality continues once you open the box. There's nothing fancy about these headphones---no fitness features, no noise cancellation, no ambient listening mode. But what the Elite 45h does provide is excellent detail and full-bodied audio, and a wonderfully comfortable fit and a design that is stylish and simple to operate. The over the ear pads are soft. Since they sit on the ears, they are compatible with wearing eyeglasses. Out of the box, the sound quality is exceptional for this price point---and rivals headphones costing much more. But not satisfied with out of the box sound? No problem. EQ the sound to your personal preferences with the free Jabra Sound+/MySound app. Configured via an in-app hearing test, MySound measures your hearing and creates an optimized listening profile. Want something you can change on the fly? Use the custom EQ to adjust the sound to your taste. Now back to the minimalist stuff. Included is a USB-C charging cable and simple but welcome soft case. But wait, you may say, there is no instruction manual included. Again, no problem. There is a downloadable manual available online from Jabra. Hey, with the Elite 45h Jabra has you and your ears covered. Highly recommended! ... show more

  • Excellent on-ear phones, though mine don't stay on my head
I would like to rate this Jabra headphones package five stars. The sound is excellent, noise canceling works well, and battery life is downright amazing. It also has useful and easy to use call-handling capabilities, which in my limited examination, work very well. You can also use it to connect with Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant, etc. All in all, a very fine and attractively-priced product, and seems to be very well-made. The Jabra also comes with software to manage various functions, and a suite of equalizer settings that provide different sound profiles, similar to many others (treble punch, bass boost, rock, auditorium, etc.). As far as I can determine with limited use, they are rudimentary but functional. The Jabra comes with a black fabric bag in which to keep it. You pull the drawstrings to close the pouch. Mine came untied the third time I used it, and went back into the interior of the seam that houses it, never to be recovered. Oh well. The only real drawback, and unfortunately the issue that keeps me from giving a better rating, is that the phones settle awkwardly, the on-ear cups sit at an angle that doesn't allow a secure fit, aren't adjustable enough to correct this, and so are likely to fall off one's head and crash to the floor. I've had these a little over a month, and while the noise-canceling works, and the sound is quite good, the fact that I can't depend on them staying on my head severely limits their usefulness. To be fair, my head could be exceptionally weirdly-shaped, so YMMV. It's definitely worth the price and should provide lots of value throughout its life. ... show more

  • Comfortable with an excellent sound
I like these headphones a lot. Sound: I'm not an audiophile by any means, and I'm old enough that my hearing isn't perfect, but I'd rate the sound as excellent. Comfort: They're comfortable for long periods -- certainly hours. When I do dishes or laundry, I sometimes have to move them back on my head so they're secure. You could probably wear them during some exercising but not others. On a treadmill, probably OK; pole-vaulting, probably not. Bluetooth: I've successfully connected them to my Lenovo laptop, Android phone and Android tablet. If you read the manufacturer's specs, you might get the impression that you can't connect to a laptop but that wasn't my experience at all. I do have one suggestion: open the full Bluetooth settings page (from Settings) and click on "Add Bluetooth or other device". That way you can see that the headphones are added as an audio device. We have a Roku TV, so I've also listened to the TV using the Roku app on my phone. Battery life: the battery life is phenomenal. I keep them charged by plugging them into one of the USB ports on my laptop. No charger needed! Bonus: I like the fact that the right and left are clearly labelled R and L. Value for money: If you're an audiophile or have other stringent requirements, you can probably get better headphones by paying a lot more money -- double or triple -- but these are a great value at less than a hundred dollars. ... show more

  • Comfortable, light, long lasting, good sound
I haven't tried the noise cancelling on these or downloaded the app, but out of the box they pair fine to two different android devices and have very nice sound (I'm no audiophile, but you'd probably be looking at higher end ones if you were.) They do naturally cancel some sound so they may be by default in noise canceling mode or just cover my ears well. It's hard for me to find headphones that are comfortable and these sit well and can be worn around the neck when not in use. They have good power saving and I've only drained the battery once, when I left them connected all night instead of putting them to sleep or on the charger. A normal day of listening to podcasts and music (not all day, but when I feel like it) has at most gotten them down to medium battery. They handle phone calls well, though sound a touch attenuated compared to from the phone. I've asked and the other end can hear me fine. ... show more

  • Great for at home listening and office work; Not good for in public listening
The music audio is VERY good to excellent on this although the out-of-box bass setting was far from the bass that I like. However, the Jabra app equalizer lets you customize and I used that to boost the bass and that helped. B/c this headphone does not have a noise canceling feature listening at home is fine since there is not much surrounding noise but take it into public at the gym and the music definitely loses some impact and punch. I am comparing it to my previous Beats Solo which was great at blocking out surrounding noise once the music is playing and I'm working out. If you're planning to take this in public or to the gym I would lean toward something like the Beats Solo. If you're just chilling at home I'd take the Jabra over the Beats Solo since the midrange and highs on the Jabra are much more pronounced and clear. Listen to Drake's Energy @ the 2 min. mark and you'll see the difference in the cymbals w/ the Jabra over the Beats Solo. The Jabra's clarity at the mids and highs just blows the Beats Solo out of the water considering the Jabra Elite 45h is about 60% less than the Beats Solo. What I also liked a lot is Jabra's app where you can customize your sounds depending on the type of music. As far as looks and comfort, I prefer the Beats Solo although the Jabra is lighter the ear pads do get warmer faster. Build-wise, the Beats is better. The Jabra also has features like asking Siri or Alexa for assistance and the microphone for talking is great. The Jabra just has a lot more features and for 60% less than the Beats the value definitely leans toward the Jabra. ... show more
