Description

Matcha is a type of Japanese green tea that is made by grinding shade-cultivated tea leaves into a fine powder. When making matcha, we add this powder to a bowl or mug, add water, whisk, and enjoy. This is a unique tea, since you consume the entire tea leaf when you drink it. Try Sayaka (Horai) as your first impression of Ippodo matcha. Character: Smooth sweetness and umami accompanied by a hint of bitterness. Just enough richness for matcha fans, and approachable for beginners. Recommended for everyone - experience matcha in its most classic form, whisked straight with just water. Recommended for matcha fans - experience pure, powerful matcha character. Recommended for matcha beginners and those who love creamy, soothing drinks. Located in the heart of Kyoto, Ippodo Tea Co. has provided the highest quality Japanese green tea for over three centuries. More than just a retailer, we are a multi-faceted tea company that carefully selects, blends, and crafts its tea. Our tasting team, led by our president, monitors the consistency of all of our blends. Teas from Ippodo Tea are of the finest class, cultivated in the mountains of Kyoto and the surrounding area. This region is renowned for producing the highest grade of green tea in Japan, thanks largely to its mild misty climate, mineral-rich soil, and near-perfect balance of sunshine and rainfall. Matcha is a green tea that is made by grinding shade-cultivated tea leaves into a fine powder. Characterized by a rich aroma, mellow umami, and a vivid green color, this tea is a favorite in Japan and around the world. Gyokuro is a green tea that has an abundance of hearty-sweet umami flavor. With a dew-like aroma, less astringency, and a thick character, this tea is one for slowly sipping and savoring. Sencha brews a harmonious balance of umami, sweetness, bitterness, and astringency, with a bright fragrance like a sunny field. Enjoy sencha in the morning or afternoon, at mealtime or teatime. This classic green tea fits any occasion. Bancha teas are light-bodied, fragrant, and refreshing, with a variety of different aromas to choose from. Teas from this category are a good choice for something to drink throughout the day, every day. We are a family-run Japanese tea company founded in 1717, in the heart of Kyoto. About Ippodo Tea Our tea comes from the mountains in and neighbouring Japan’s Kyoto prefecture. You can think of Ippodo Tea as tea from the Kyoto area. About Tea Grades The higher Ippodo Tea grades will have a fuller aftertaste, a sweeter aroma, a brighter deep green color, and a richer, sweeter umami flavor. Remarkably aromatic, light-bodied, and refreshing. Hojicha is one of the most popular teas in our selection.

  • Healthy and delicious...
Size: 1.41 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I'm not gonna lie I am a very picky person when it comes to what I both eat and drink. My mornings have always consisted of very sweet coffee, mainly sweetened with just a creamer. After years of constantly feeking tired in the middle of the day and an upset stomach, I decided to do some research and try something else. Tea was my only other option when it came to a hot beverage in the mornings. More research and I landed on Matcha. This brand in particular. Iposddo Sayaka was suggested by many for a first time Matcha drinker. This is my second order of it. From what I've learned its not too hard to tell whether or not its fresh or stale, what ive biught twice now has been fresh and since I use 1 tsp a day, so far its stayed fresh until the end. Yes it smells like grass and earth, but to me personally it smells amazing. I sweeten it with a little bit if Maple syrup. Every morning I heat my water to 176, sift and whisk, add a little more water and my syrup and I can honestly say within the first 3 days of drinking this in the morning and a classic green tea on the go, I have felt so much better. My mood as lightened, I don't have a crash in the middle of the day. My energy has definitely increased. Straight out of the package it's a very vibrant green, it blends amazingly, I have not had any issues with grittyness, it froths as it's supposed to when whisked and heated properly. As for quality, I don't have a comparison, but as far as I'm concerned and what I've researched this really is great quality, its rich, earthy, and honeslty just really healthy. I will Def be buying again for the 3rd time soon. I highly recommend this product for anyone wanting try Match Tea for the first time, but please do your own research and follow what you feel is best for you. ... show more

  • Pricey but worth it
Size: 1.41 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I purchased this after watching countless youtube videos on how to make the perfect cup of matcha, how matcha is grown/made, and all things matcha. The best were several videos comparing different brands of matcha powder and how to tell the difference in quality. This brand came highly recommended and I decided to try it. It is smooth, grassy but in a gentle light way, and blends super well. I even did the finger swipe test between this one and another brand I had and this passed the quality test with flying colors. I didn't have any chunks or gritty mouthfeel. It was delicate and sweet. Amazing quality. I compared it to a Costco brand I had and the Costco brand was more brown, less quality, more bitter and a bigger grassy taste. I couldn't believe the difference. I will still drink the Costco brand for finance reasons but when I want something extra luxurious I'll dip into my ceremonial grade matcha ... show more

  • Good starter matcha, delicious and good price point
Size: 1.41 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I’ve read that for good ceremonial matcha, one should look for a price point of about $1/gram. This is closer to 90 cents a gram and worth every penny. Nice umami flavor rounds out with pleasant, not overwhelming, sweetness. Made with chasen/chawan, about 2 grams (so, two little bamboo scoops) to 70 ml of water, probably at 85°C—I heat the kettle to 90, but by the time I’ve rinsed the bowl & whisk the water is a bit cooler. I started drinking matcha to replace coffee in the mornings; at first I started with another matcha from ippodo, horai-no-mukashi, which is earthier but I find the flavor of this matcha, sayaka-no-mukashi, more dynamic and more balanced. There’s another review that says this is would probably be a good starter matcha, but that it lacks significant character. As a new matcha drinker, I agree that this is a great starter matcha! It feels like you can taste all the different directions matcha’s flavor profile can take, without being pulled too far in one direction or another (nutty, umami, bitter, sweet, creamy....it’s balanced between all of these.) I’m excited to try some more and higher-end matchas from ippodo, to see what shape a matcha with more character might take. If you’re thinking of switching to matcha from coffee, give this stuff a try—with the caveat that you might need to drink two bowls of matcha in the morning rather than one to begin with (which factors into the price; switching to matcha from coffee is definitely an expensive investment in long-term health!)—I found that the first week, if I didn’t have two bowls in the morning I’d become sluggish after about an hour, but two bowls kept me focused and alert without the anxiety & hand-shaking I’ve come to associate with a morning coffee. Now that it’s been more like two and a half weeks since I switched, I’m finding the caffeine from the second bowl a bit too strong. Might try one bowl in the morning and another for a mid-day pick-me-up....the meditative process of whisking the tea, and the flavor of this matcha, is a real treat I look forward to every day! ... show more

  • Super High Quality
Size: 1.41 Ounce (Pack of 1)
This matcha is of an excellent quality. The bright green is super satisfying. It’s got a very strong flavor, but it isn’t too bitter. It’s strong enough that I use about 1/3 as much as when I use MatchaBar (my favorite so far). Even though it’s a very small package, I use so little it is going to take a long time to get through it. The flavor is kind of floral and a little vanilla-y, and quite grassy. But not bad grassy. It tastes very green, I guess? Overall, it’s amazing quality and I think a good buy. It isn’t my favorite, but it’s definitely a solid choice. My only complaint is that it likes to clump a little bit. I’ll make matcha lattes in a blender (because I’m lazy), and this matcha likes to stick to the sides of the cup, even if I strain it first. My other matchas don’t generally need straining before being blended, so that’s the only thing I really didn’t like about this one. But a good matcha to try if you’re looking to expand your matcha horizons! ... show more

  • Lovely and smooth. More grassy than umami
Size: 1.41 Ounce (Pack of 1)
Deliciously smooth and clearly high quality. Each flavor is defined and blends into the next. It was very grassy and not much umami, so not my personal favorite type of matcha but the matcha itself was phenomenal nonetheless. Due to a not super strong umami, it wasn’t bitter at all, so great for beginners if you don’t mind a grassy flavor. My dad loved it! ... show more

  • Smooth, Vibrant, and Perfect for Daily Usucha
Size: 1.41 Ounce (Pack of 1)
Sayaka Matcha is a beautiful, balanced ceremonial-grade matcha. It whisks into a bright green tea with a smooth, slightly sweet taste and gentle umami—no bitterness. Great for everyday use, especially as usucha. Fresh, clean, and easy to enjoy whether hot or iced. A reliable pick from Ippodo!

  • First time Match Experience
Size: 1.41 Ounce (Pack of 1)
his is my first Match tea experience. According to their website, they recommend Sayaka for your first matcha experience. The reason I am first trying this out is because I want to veer away from the morning coffee routine and try something different. I was a little skeptical of whether matcha tea would give me the same energy boost as a typical expresso (which I normally drink). But surely, it has the same power of an expresso. They recommend 1tsp for every 2oz of boiling water. To me 2oz of tea is just not enough. So I used 1 tsp for 8 oz boiling water mixed with 1tsp of sugar and 4 oz of froth milk. and still get the same boost of energy from the tea. I could not image drinking this as a 2 oz/1tsp shot. I do enjoy the experience of drinking matcha tea and have gradually made the switch. Yes, I still enjoy an expresso latte from time to time. As for the product, It is much smaller than I thought, but in reality, if you have a larger size, it would just go bad possible after a month after opening from oxidation. So the size of the packaging is understandable. According to the website, the best before date is 180 days after packaging. ... show more
