I’ll be honest: I used to steer clear of 360 cameras because I figured they were just gimmicks. My go‑tos were a gimbal camera (Ozopocket) and a Luna Ultra. But the X6 completely flipped my opinion, and 90% of the credit goes to InstaFrame 2.0. This mode uses AI to lock onto people, pets, or pretty much any subject in the 360 footage, then exports a standard 4K video that looks like you had a robotic gimbal tracking the action – with no manual panning needed. I grabbed the optional foldable selfie stick with the remote, and the whole experience felt magical: I could hold the stick, tweak the framing in real time with the joystick, and it was like using a motorized gimbal without all the extra bulk. For what I do, InstaFrame 2.0 has become my default. The image quality isn't quite as crisp as my Luna Ultra when you really pixel‑peep, but it's more than good enough for social media and personal projects. And when it comes to convenience, it absolutely demolishes any dedicated gimbal. The beauty is, if you don't want to frame on the fly, you can still shoot in full 360 and pick your composition later – that classic freedom is still there. With InstaFrame, you really get the best of both worlds: a gimbal‑like experience plus the safety net of capturing everything. I’ve been using the Insta360 X5 for over a year, and I honestly thought it was as good as 360 cams could get. Then I unboxed the X6, did a quick test in my living room at 8K/30fps, and my jaw dropped. Playing back the footage on the camera itself and on my phone, the clarity was noticeably sharper – less noise, better contrast, and that “pop” in the image that makes details stand out without looking overprocessed. But the real shock came at night. I mounted it on my motorcycle handlebar and rode through city streets with streetlights, then out to darker suburban roads. The footage made the scenes look brighter than I remembered – almost like walking through a festival at night. Even on roads with sparse lighting, the area hit by my headlight came out vividly bright and moody at the same time. Compared to my X5, the X6’s low‑light performance is flat‑out superior: less grain, better highlight control, and a sense of “openness” in the image that feels more natural. The UI responsiveness is also snappier – navigating menus, starting/stopping recording, and playback all feel fluid and satisfying. The X6 is also noticeably smaller and lighter, which makes it less intrusive when shooting handheld or on the bike. This is a no‑brainer upgrade.

Coming from the X5, my immediate reaction is that I love the smaller form factor. It sits comfortably in your palm rather than feeling like you’re waving around a tiny baton, and it has a nice, grippy, rugged texture all around. A massive win: Insta360 kept the exact same base attachment points, so your older mounts will play nicely. They also added a dedicated lanyard slot to the selfie stick this time around. As someone who upgrade-migrated after... let’s just say unfortunate events with the previous x5 camera body, that added drop protection brings huge peace of mind. The new stick is roughly an inch longer both collapsed and fully extended, and features a subtle yellow/gold accent. It looks sharp, though it is slightly less discreet if you're trying to somewhat blend into the background. ➕What’s in the Essentials Bundle? ➖ Power & Charging: Extra battery and a dedicated 2-battery fast charger with a built in USB-C charging cable but also has a port to plug one in incase the built in one ever fails (plus a spare external USB-C cable is included ). ➖ Protection & Maintenance: Silicone lens cap cover, neoprene sleeve (that with force will fit the body with the lense cap), micro-fiber cloth, and an extended warranty. ➖ Extras: Selfie stick (with lanyard slot), Insta360 stickers, and quick-start paperwork. ⭐️ Why the Essentials Bundle is the Play: If you are coming from an older model like the X5, note that the batteries and lens cap do not carry over due to the redesigned dimensions. I ride every weekend on twisty mountain roads, and I’ve been through three action cams in two years. The X6 is the first one that doesn’t make me want to throw my helmet off. The 8K/50fps mode is a revelation! When I replay my passes, every lean angle and pavement crack is crisp, with zero ghosting or wobble. My buddy’s 8K/30 unit looks like a slideshow next to this. Plus, the wind noise filter actually lets my voice come through clearly at 60 mph. If you ride, stop hesitating.

I have an X5 already which I bought about two months ago (in retrospect, I should have waited but I had no idea the X6 was so close). Luckily this does give me the opportunity to do some side by side comparisons. It's clear what the X6 (and the others before it) are capable of. You can see all sorts of videos and reviews on YT and wherever. What really struck me is the noticeable quality improvement in still images (and presumably video, although it's harder to tell with everything moving). Still images were a sore point for me on the X5, they just looked terrible. Even on a 72MP image, by the time you cropped it down to a normal image, the quality was awful, like trying to save an image with a jpeg quality of 0. Lots of pixelation and muddy, lost detail. A real disappointment because I had hoped to use the X5 partially as an ultrawide still camera. The X6, with a larger sensor and larger resulting image, retains more of that detail. You're still not getting anything even close to a decent phone camera or DSLR. Really not even close. But you are getting a better result than you would get with the X5. Save speed for images is marginally faster but hardly lightning quick: On the X5, for a full-resolution 72MP image shot in PureShot+RAW mode, you'll have to wait 12 seconds after every shot. On the X6, a 120MP image with the same exact configuration will take closer to 10 seconds. That's still a long time to wait, but here's the kicker: on the X5, every shot locks you out until it's completely done writing. But the X6 seems to have a small buffer, allowing you to take (for full resolution Pure+RAW) 4 shots immediately one after the other while your previous shots are still being written. I definitely like the improved battery life. I know that these cameras have a lot of processing to do so I forgive them the generally lackluster battery life of 90 minutes (recording at 8K 30fps) for the X5, but the X6 managed to get that up to 140 minutes with a battery that is physically smaller than that of its predecessor. The unit itself is smaller too; it might be negligibly wider, but it's noticeably shorter and around the same thickness. It's sort of a mixed blessing in this case. I kind of like the "long" feel of the X5 because I have large-ish hands and it's a little easier to keep them off the lens. The X6 feels a little awkward to hold in comparison. And the screen filling most of the front makes it feel strange to grip while trying not to inadvertently touch some setting. All in all though, a minor gripe. Most of the time you'll have this attached to the selfie stick or a mount anyway, because holding it makes your arm look even weirder than it would with a normal camera.
