  • Saint George Gently, DCI
This series exhibits really outstanding acting and screen writing. If I were still teaching Aristotle’s Poetics I would use a few of these episodes to illustrate ideal examples of his recommendations for plot, prolepsis, and, katharsis. But this series is also about much more than murder mysteries, and should be considered as belonging to the literary genre called hagiography as well. In fact the word “saint” is applied to DCI (detective chief inspector) Gently more than once in this series of episodes, but in a dismissive way by the chief constables whose crimes, flawed inspections, and cover-ups he exposes and corrects. Although filmed circa 2006, the series is set in the early to mid-1960s and takes on social issues which were current and controversial then, including abortion, child molestation, mesothelioma, and skinhead gangs among others. Since the screen writers knew in 2006 how these social issues turned out they were able to treat them very confidently and directly in the series. In order to display a saint the hagiographer needs to place them in a worldly sinful context, and this the series’ excellent writers do. At times it appears a little too much, but perhaps the contrast is necessary. In his crusade for absolute truth and justice DCI Gently has to deal not only with murder, but many other sins and crimes from the 1960s including child abuse, adultery, fornication, prostitution, homosexuality, alcoholism, treason, betrayals, and even the murder by a child. Since the series in set in the Midlands of Newcastle and Durham, we are spared some the coarse common language for these behaviors by English slang usage like snogging and shagging. No saint is perfect and DCI Gently has his sins as well, but they are minor and forgivable in his edge-of-the-criminal-underworld context. He loses his temper and occasionally slaps or hits a recalcitrant suspect. Since he is portrayed as a former boxer these can be rather serious smacks. He also keeps a bottle of whiskey in his desk and occasionally takes a wee drap when puzzled, stressed, or claiming victory in a case. Perhaps taking a bit of strong drink in a British police station is permitted, but it surely would not be tolerated in the United States. And, I doubt either British or American detectives are allowed to rough up handcuffed suspects to elicit information. Of course, Saint Gently dies a martyr, shot in the back with a rifle from a distance by the hit man for a mob he had finally found evidence to convict. This series is well worth buying from Amazon even if you subscribe to Acorn, I lived and worked in England in the mid-1960s and pretty well “get” Midlands dialects (and I can attest to the currency at that time of the social issues the screen writers deal with), but my wife enjoys close captioning and likes to watch them repeatedly. The plots are complex and multilayered and even as an experienced reader of murder mysteries, she finds them challenging. One episode has two major plots and three minor plots all of which come to a joint denouement with the raised eyebrow of Martin Shaw, the actor in the role of DCI Gently, in the last scene. ... show more

  • Agatha Christie knock-off
Well acted but, gimme a break, the plots are like Agatha Christie with testosterone. The significant clues leading up to the denouement are not revealed until the very end, which is really a cop-out. Great writing and plotting respects the reader's intelligence, and drops crumbs here and there. Careless writers hide all the clues until the end, then spring them on the poor befuddled reader like jacks in a box, whanging out one after another. ... show more

  • Incompatible with US DVD players ....
Doesn’t play on US systems and this certainly wasn’t highlighted in the listing. Beware this seller.
