My daughter and I had so much fun growing these!! We released them across the street at a nature reserve site once they were ready. It's great having purchased this complete kit and only having to buy more caterpillars for this summer! Be cautious of weather and heat when purchasing.     • Underside of lid needs to be improved

It was really fun to watch the teeny caterpillars rapidly grow and become chrysalids. One issue - actually two, the kit only had 4 caterpillars when it should contain 5. The second issue was that almost all of them fell off of the lid, it seems really difficult for them to cling to it. I placed them on a paper towel on the bottom of the enclosure and 3 of the 4 successfully hatched. The 4th one seemed to struggle and was partially fused to the husk - possibly from being on the bottom of the enclosure instead of hanging. He didn’t make it. Still, we had 3 beautiful butterflies to release and that was rewarding. I’ve since bought a replacement kit of caterpillars from the same company and all five of the chrysalids fell from the lid. There’s a lining of air permeable fabric on the underside of the lid that in theory they can hang from but doesn’t seem to work. I currently have 5 chrysalids on the bottom of the enclosure and I’m hoping they all hatch successfully. The lid needs to be improved so the butterflies can emerge from the hanging position as they should. ... show more

Annual purchase that never disappoints. This is my 12th year buying the kit. This is fun for all ages. The brochure has very detailed instructions with pictures of what to expect and do. We raise beautiful butterflies, feed them fruit and sugar water for days and then let them go.
